The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Start by checking power and the cable, trying another port, and connecting directly to the computer instead of through a hub. Change one thing at a time so you can see which part of the connection affects the problem.
Start with the connection and power
First note whether one USB device disconnects or several do, and whether it happens at a particular time, such as when the computer wakes from sleep. These observations help organize troubleshooting; they do not prove a cause.
- Check that the device is switched on and has power. Make sure its cable is firmly connected at both ends, and look for visible cable damage.
- Connect it to a different USB port on the computer.
- If the device is connected through a hub or dock, check that the hub or dock has power. Then bypass it and connect the device directly to the computer.
Microsoft’s USB troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the connection, trying another port, and testing without a hub. A result narrows down where to investigate, but by itself does not prove that a particular component is defective.
Check whether the device has enough power
A device that needs more power than the connection provides may behave erratically. Test power before assuming the device or computer needs replacing:

- Disconnect other USB devices you are not using.
- If the computer is a laptop, connect it to external power.
- If the USB device supports its own power adapter, connect that adapter.
- Try the device on another computer, if available.
These are among the power checks in Microsoft’s guidance. If the device works when externally powered or with fewer devices attached, that points toward a power limitation in the original setup; it does not establish that every disconnect has the same explanation.
For USB-C, check that the port and cable support the job
A USB-C plug fitting into a port does not by itself establish that the cable and port support the feature you are using. For example, a connection can involve data, display output, or charging, and the computer’s port and cable must support the required function. Check the computer and device documentation for the relevant capability, and test the device with a direct connection while isolating a hub or dock.

Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance covers compatibility among the computer, port, cable, device, and features in use. If the cable is visibly damaged or lacks the capability required for the connection, a compatible replacement is reasonable to test; an arbitrary USB-C cable is not a guaranteed fix.
Use comparisons to isolate what is failing
Change one factor at a time and note what happens. Compare the original device, cable, port, hub or dock, power arrangement, and computer with an alternative where available. If several devices disconnect on one computer, for example, record that pattern rather than immediately replacing the cable for a single device. These comparisons help identify which part of the setup is associated with the symptom, but they are diagnostic clues, not definitive proof of hardware failure.

Windows-only checks if the basic tests do not help
The steps above apply broadly; the following tools and power-management details are specific to Windows.
Generate an energy report with PowerCfg
Windows’ powercfg /energy command creates an HTML energy-efficiency report. Microsoft says the report can identify common issues, including ineffective use of USB selective suspend. It is a diagnostic report, not an automatic repair. See Microsoft’s PowerCfg command-line options for details.

Reserve USB ETW for advanced diagnosis
USB Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) can capture USB device and driver events, including enumeration and start failures. Interpreting this event-level information is a specialist troubleshooting task, rather than a first step for most users. Microsoft’s USB ETW documentation explains the approach.
Do not turn off selective suspend as a universal fix
USB selective suspend lets Windows suspend an individual USB port while other ports on the same hub continue operating. It is enabled by default. Microsoft Learn’s USB Selective Suspend documentation states: “Microsoft strongly recommends not disabling selective suspend.” That makes turning it off a poor default response to repeated disconnects. If investigating a problem specifically associated with idle or waking from sleep, treat a change as a targeted diagnostic and restore the original setting if it does not help.

What to try next—and when to consider a replacement
If the problem remains, Microsoft notes that some hardware or platform behavior can cause an electronic disconnect and reconnect in particular scenarios; that possibility does not identify the cause in an individual case. Its USB FAQ provides further context.
Consider a compatible replacement cable only if inspection or USB-C capability checks point to the cable. Consider a powered hub only if testing suggests that the device needs more power or the existing hub is part of the problem. A direct-connection test and checks of the device’s power requirements should come first. Neither purchase is guaranteed to resolve the symptom.
