Yes—some Surface Book 2 15-inch owners have reported temporary image retention, sometimes called ghosting, in which static elements remain faintly visible after the screen changes. The reports establish that the symptom has occurred, but not how common it is or whether every case is permanent burn-in. The affected displays described are LCDs, so “burn-in” is not necessarily the right diagnosis.
What Surface Book 2 15-inch owners have reported
In a Microsoft-hosted support discussion, one owner said static content such as browser tabs or the Windows Start button could remain visible after about 15 minutes, especially against a dark-gray background. That owner reported three affected devices. A separate report dated January 30, 2020, described temporary retention on an LCD identified as LG LGD0554 / LGD_MP0.0_LP150QD112604 and mentioned multiple replacement devices with the same issue. These are individual owner accounts, not a controlled test or a measure of the product-wide failure rate. Microsoft owner discussion
The available reports do not establish a reliable percentage of affected 15-inch units. They also do not show that all Surface Book 2 displays are affected, or that every after-image is permanent.
Image retention versus permanent burn-in
Temporary image retention is an after-image that can fade when the displayed content changes or the screen is powered down. Permanent burn-in refers to persistent display damage. The owner reports describe the symptom as transient or temporary, and identify the screen as LCD; do not assume that an after-image is permanent OLED-style burn-in. General LCD guidance notes that severe damage from prolonged static imagery can persist, but the reports alone cannot determine the cause or permanence of an individual device’s artifact. How to troubleshoot image retention
- Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and install Windows Update. Restart after updates finish and check whether the artifact returns.
- Install the Surface Book 2 driver and firmware package that matches the Windows build on the device.
- Check the display in UEFI. If the after-image is visible there, Windows software is less likely to be responsible. Microsoft’s support reply recommends checking the device outside Windows as part of troubleshooting. Microsoft support discussion and troubleshooting steps
- If it remains, contact Microsoft service or warranty support. Note when the artifact appears and whether it fades after the device has been powered off for an extended period; that information can help support assess the symptom.
Microsoft also warns that ultraviolet light and excessive heat can damage a Surface display. For screens that must show static content for long periods, general LCD manufacturer guidance recommends using a screen saver or periodically refreshing the display. When to seek service or consider a replacement screen
If the artifact remains after troubleshooting, is visible in UEFI, or does not fade after a long power-off period, contact Microsoft support and check coverage before paying for a repair. A replacement LCD or display assembly may be a repair option if diagnostics point to hardware, but verify that the part is for the 15-inch Surface Book 2 and that its panel and connector match the specific device. Confirm the seller’s quality and return terms, and weigh the full repair cost and installation difficulty against the value of the laptop. The owner reports do not establish a universal repair outcome.
