Pupillary distance (PD) is the distance between the centers of your pupils, measured in millimeters. An optician uses it to position each lens so its optical center lines up with your eye. You may see one binocular PD number or two monocular numbers, and PD is not necessarily printed on an eyeglass prescription.

What does PD mean on a glasses order?

PD, also called interpupillary distance, is a lens-fitting measurement—not a measure of your eyesight power. A single or binocular PD gives the distance from the center of one pupil to the center of the other. A dual or monocular PD gives a separate measurement for each eye, usually from the center of that pupil to the bridge of the nose. For example, Cleveland Clinic shows a dual value such as 31/32, with the right-eye figure listed first. See Cleveland Clinic’s PD explanation.

Accurate positioning matters most when lens powers are high, the lenses are multifocal, or the frame requires precise alignment.

Is PD part of an eyeglass prescription?

Not always. The College of Optometrists states that PD is a dispensing measurement rather than part of the prescription. Oregon’s regulator likewise says it is not among that state’s required spectacle-prescription contents (Oregon Board of Optometry FAQs). Rules and dispensing practices differ by jurisdiction, so ask your optometrist, optician or optical shop for the recorded PD instead of assuming it must appear on every prescription. The Canadian Association of Optometrists also notes provincial differences (its interpupillary-distance guide).

Distance PD, near PD and dual measurements

PD should match the viewing task. Distance PD is measured while you look at a distant target; near PD is measured while you focus on something close. The WHO spectacle-dispensing guidance specifies a distant target ideally 6 metres away for single-vision distance work and a near target ideally about 40 centimetres away for spherical single-near-vision work. Multifocal fitting uses both distance and near targets.

Do not automatically subtract a fixed amount from distance PD to obtain near PD. The correct value depends on the viewing task and the way the measurement is taken.

Ways to obtain your PD

Method What it can provide Precision and limits
Optician or optical professional Binocular or monocular PD, with fitting context Most accurate route in Cleveland Clinic guidance; recommended for progressives, bifocals, trifocals, strong prescriptions and eye-alignment conditions.
Millimeter ruler and mirror Usually an estimate of binocular PD; can be adapted for separate eye readings Convenient, but technique and reading errors affect accuracy.
Smartphone or web app Often a binocular or monocular estimate, depending on the app “The accuracy of at-home rulers and apps can vary,” according to Cleveland Clinic; no comparative accuracy ranking is established here.

For progressive or other multifocal lenses, PD is only one input. The Canadian Association of Optometrists also identifies segment height, vertex distance, pantoscopic tilt and wrap angle. A home PD estimate cannot replace those frame-specific measurements.

How to measure PD at home with a millimeter ruler

This is an estimate for ordering purposes, not a substitute for professional fitting or an eye examination. Use a ruler with clear millimeter markings.

Cleveland Clinic mirror method

  1. Stand about 18 inches (46 centimetres) from a well-lit mirror.
  2. Hold the ruler horizontally below your eyes, with the millimeter markings visible.
  3. Close one eye and align the ruler’s zero mark with the center of the open pupil.
  4. Keep the ruler still, switch eyes, and read the millimeter mark aligned with the center of the other pupil.
  5. Record the result as your binocular PD. If your dispenser requests monocular values, repeat the alignment so each eye is measured from the nose bridge reference.

If another person helps, keep your head still and look at the helper’s eye while the helper aligns and reads the ruler, as described by Cleveland Clinic.

Repeat readings for consistency

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recommends measuring three times and averaging the readings for higher accuracy. Its instructions are available at VA: How to measure your pupillary distance. The VA procedure uses different mirror-distance and eye-closing details from the Cleveland Clinic method, so follow one complete set of instructions rather than mixing steps.

Ultrassist Pupillary Distance Ruler for Eyeglasses
  • STEP-BY-STEP ENGLISH USER GUIDE: An English PDF user guide is available in the Product guides and documents section of this page. It explains preparation, correct ruler positioning, right- and left-eye monocular PD readings, binocular PD calculation, and helpful measurement tips
  • BINOCULAR AND DUAL PD MEASUREMENT: The marked scales support both a single-number binocular PD reading and separate right and left monocular, or dual PD, values. Align the center notch with the nose bridge and read each measurement at the center of the pupil
  • CLEAR 1 MM GRADUATIONS: The pupillary distance ruler measures 23–42 mm for each eye and 46–84 mm for binocular PD. Clearly marked 1 mm graduations help you read and record the measurement when the ruler is correctly positioned、
  • TRANSPARENT FLEXIBLE PVC DESIGN: The clear PVC material keeps the eyes and pupil centers visible during alignment. Lightweight and flexible, this manual PD ruler rests across the nose bridge without batteries, apps, electronic components, or sliding parts
  • MEASURE WITH A SECOND PERSON FOR BEST RESULTS: Use the PD ruler in adequate lighting while the subject keeps their head straight, still, and facing forward. The measurer should stand directly in front at eye level. Repeat the measurement two or three times to check for consistent readings

When should a professional measure it?

  • You are ordering progressive, bifocal or trifocal lenses.
  • You need glasses for both close work and distance and are unsure which PD the order requires.
  • You have strabismus or another eye-alignment condition.
  • Your prescription is strong, your two eyes differ substantially, or previous glasses felt optically off.
  • The frame is being fitted for multifocals or needs additional measurements such as segment height and vertex distance.

For these situations, ask an optician to record the monocular distance and near values and the other measurements required by the selected frame and lens design.

How unusual is a particular PD?

Cleveland Clinic reports an adult single PD of around 63 mm, with a commonly reported range of 50–70 mm; values outside that range are described as very rare. This is population background, not a target or diagnostic cutoff. Children’s PD changes as they grow, while it generally remains stable in adults after development. Your measured value—not an average—is what belongs on your glasses order.
