If an M.2 SSD is missing from your ASUS ROG Strix X470-I BIOS, first check that its interface and socket are supported by your exact CPU. The board’s two M.2 sockets do not support the same combinations: M.2_1 can accept SATA or PCIe drives on some CPU families, while M.2_2 is PCIe-only where supported—and unavailable with other processors. Then check the BIOS setting for M.2_2, reseat the drive with power disconnected, and cross-test it before replacing hardware.

Check whether your CPU, SSD, and M.2 socket are compatible

M.2 describes a drive’s physical form factor and connector family, not whether it uses SATA or PCIe/NVMe. On the ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING, compatibility depends on the installed processor, the socket, and the SSD’s interface. ASUS lists M-key devices in lengths 2242, 2260, and 2280. The ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING manual gives these CPU-specific details:

Processor family M.2_1 (top side) M.2_2 (bottom side) Important note
AMD Ryzen 1st and 2nd Generation PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA PCIe 3.0 x4 When M.2_2 operates in PCIe mode, PCIEX16 runs at x8.
AMD Ryzen with Radeon Vega Graphics PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA Unsupported Use M.2_1 for a supported drive.
7th Generation A-series/Athlon SATA mode only Unsupported A PCIe/NVMe SSD is not supported in M.2_1 for this CPU group.

For example, a SATA M.2 drive will not work in M.2_2, which is PCIe-only when supported. A PCIe/NVMe drive will not work in M.2_1 with a 7th Generation A-series/Athlon processor, for which ASUS lists SATA mode only. Confirm your precise CPU model and the SSD’s interface before treating a missing drive as a fault.

Find the socket and check the M.2_2 BIOS setting

ASUS identifies M.2_1 as the top-side socket and M.2_2 as the bottom-side socket. If your compatible PCIe drive is in M.2_2, check that the socket has not been disabled:

  • IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
  1. Enter BIOS setup and locate M.2_2 PCIe Bandwidth Configuration.
  2. Choose Auto to let the BIOS detect M.2_2. With an M.2 device detected there, PCIEX16 runs at x8.
  3. Do not use Disabled (X16 mode) if you want M.2_2 active; that setting disables M.2_2 so PCIEX16 can run at x16.

The BIOS also provides Auto, Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 link-speed settings for M.2_1 and M.2_2. Leave these at their defaults unless you have a specific reason to test a different link speed. See the X470-I BIOS manual for the documented options. The lane-sharing tradeoff described here concerns M.2_2 and PCIEX16; do not assume a SATA-port conflict based on generic guidance for other motherboards.

Use this troubleshooting sequence

1. Record the setup

  • Write down the exact CPU model, the socket in use (M.2_1 or M.2_2), the SSD interface (SATA or PCIe/NVMe), its length, and the BIOS version.
  • Compare the CPU, socket, and interface with the compatibility table above. For a 2242 drive, check that you have the bundled mounting kit.
  • Look for the drive in BIOS storage information and boot-device views. A drive absent from BIOS is a detection issue; an SSD that appears there but is not bootable may instead need a valid operating system or boot configuration.

2. Check firmware and remove unstable tuning

ASUS recommends checking the board’s support page for a current BIOS. Visit the ROG STRIX X470-I GAMING support hub and follow ASUS’s instructions for the exact BIOS file and update method; never interrupt an update. If you have CPU or memory overclocking enabled, ASUS says instability can prevent drive detection. Load BIOS defaults with F5, save with F10, and check again. ASUS’s general troubleshooting guidance is available in its M.2 drive detection troubleshooting article.

Kingston NV3 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD | PCIe 4.0 Gen 4x4 | Up to 6000 MB/s | SNV3S/1000G
  • Ideal for high speed, low power storage
  • Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
  • Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
  • Includes Acronis cloning software
  • 5-year limited warranty

3. Power off and reseat the SSD

Shut down, disconnect power, and then remove the drive. Reinsert it fully at the correct angle, confirm that it is in the intended socket, and secure it with the mounting screw. A 2242 drive needs the bundled mounting kit. Do not remove or install the SSD while the system is powered.

4. Cross-test the drive and socket

Test the SSD in another computer or enclosure that supports its protocol, or install a known-working, compatible SSD in the X470-I. A SATA-compatible test device cannot diagnose a PCIe-only M.2_2 socket, and a PCIe/NVMe test device is not suitable for M.2_1 on a 7th Generation A-series/Athlon CPU.

Choose a replacement only after compatibility is established

If cross-testing points to a failed drive, choose a replacement by matching the installed CPU, socket, protocol, and physical length—not by assuming that any NVMe SSD will work. The board manual specifies 2242, 2260, and 2280 M-key devices; the supported interface varies by CPU and socket as shown above. Also decide whether using M.2_2 and accepting PCIEX16 at x8 is appropriate for your setup.
