AM3 and Intel LGA 1150 do not use the same CPU-cooler mounting pattern. Secondary references commonly report a 48 × 96 mm rectangular pattern for AMD Socket AM3 and a 75 × 75 mm square pattern for Intel LGA 1150. Because the shapes and center-to-center dimensions differ, an AM3 cooler bracket should not be expected to bolt directly onto an LGA 1150 motherboard, or vice versa.

Measure from hole center to hole center, not from the hole edges. The dimensions above should be treated as commonly reported identification figures rather than fabrication-grade specifications.
Will an AM3 cooler fit LGA 1150?
Not by using the original mounting holes or bracket alone. AM3 uses a rectangular layout, while LGA 1150 uses a square layout, so a cooler designed only for one socket does not have a direct bolt-on fit for the other.
A cooler can support both sockets when the manufacturer supplies separate brackets, a suitable backplate, or an adjustable mounting system. For example, MSI lists its MAG CORELIQUID 360RH as compatible with both AM3 and LGA 1150. That product listing demonstrates model-specific compatibility; it does not mean the motherboard hole patterns are interchangeable.

What official socket guidance establishes
Intel LGA 1150 and LGA 1155
Intel states that “LGA1150 and LGA1155 sockets have the same holes for mounting CPU coolers.” This applies to those Intel sockets and should not be extended to AMD AM3.
AMD AM3, AM2 and AM2+
Noctua states that the hole spacing for its CPU-cooler installation on AM3+ and FM1 is the same as on AM2, AM2+ and AM3. That is continuity within the AMD socket family and a statement about Noctua cooler compatibility, not evidence of AM3-to-LGA 1150 compatibility.

How to verify a cooler before reusing or buying it
- Identify the exact socket. Confirm whether the board is AM3/AM3+ or Intel LGA 1150; do not rely only on the processor model.
- Check the exact cooler model’s compatibility list. Look for both the socket name and the required revision of the cooler or mounting kit.
- Verify the hardware. Confirm that the package includes the correct bracket, screws, spacers and backplate. A compatible heatsink or fan does not guarantee that its bracket fits.
- Follow the socket-specific installation manual. Intel’s LGA 1150 integration guidance includes thermal-solution installation requirements; use the cooler maker’s instructions for the actual product.
- Check physical and thermal clearance. Confirm processor thermal requirements, case height, RAM clearance and nearby motherboard-component clearance for your particular build.
- If measuring manually, compare hole centers. Measure the motherboard and the cooler bracket on the same center-to-center axes rather than comparing outside edges.
Why matching holes is not enough
Even when a bracket can be attached, safe operation still depends on the cooler’s retention pressure, backplate design, contact with the processor’s heat spreader and thermal capacity. A mounting pattern alone does not establish that a cooler can dissipate the heat of every AM3 or LGA 1150 processor.
Choosing replacement hardware
The safest choices are either a cooler explicitly listed for the target socket or a manufacturer-approved socket bracket for your existing cooler. Do not assume that a universal-looking bracket, a fan size or a heatsink family automatically includes the correct AM3 or LGA 1150 hardware. For a product such as the MSI MAG CORELIQUID 360RH, verify the current manual and the contents of the particular package before purchase or installation.

Bottom line on AM3 and LGA 1150 bolt holes
Use the reported 48 × 96 mm AM3 rectangle and 75 × 75 mm LGA 1150 square as a quick indication that the patterns differ. Direct cross-platform bolting is not expected. Compatibility is possible only when the cooler’s own mounting system explicitly supports the target socket and supplies the necessary hardware.
