Yes. A 4K display can show a super-wide image with its proportions intact by fitting the image inside the screen and leaving the unused area as bars. The bars appear at the sides or above and below, depending on the image and screen shapes. The setting may be in the app, graphics driver, operating system, or monitor; a display’s 4K resolution alone does not guarantee support for every super-wide signal or refresh rate.
What letterboxing does
Letterboxing scales an image to fit within a display area while preserving its aspect ratio. Any area the image does not fill is left blank, usually black. That differs from stretching, which fills the screen by changing the image’s proportions, and cropping, which fills the screen by cutting off part of the image.
Bars are a matter of geometry: when the source image is narrower than the display area, bars generally appear at the sides; when it is wider, bars generally appear above and below. The exact result depends on the source and destination aspect ratios and on how the active scaling path handles the image.
Where to enable aspect-ratio-preserving scaling
First identify what you are trying to display: the desktop, a game, a video, or a particular input signal. These can use different scaling controls, and an application may override or bypass desktop behavior.

- App, game, or video player: Look for options such as “Fit,” “Original,” “Aspect ratio,” or “Letterbox” in its display or playback settings.
- Graphics driver: Look for “Preserve aspect ratio” or “Aspect ratio” in the GPU control panel. AMD and NVIDIA provide aspect-ratio-preserving scaling choices, though the available controls depend on the hardware, driver, and selected display.
- Monitor: Check the on-screen display (OSD) for image-size or scaling options. Menu names and behavior vary by model.
- Operating system: Desktop scaling can preserve aspect ratio and leave black bands, but that does not necessarily control how a game or video is scaled.
Prefer an aspect-ratio-preserving option when proportions matter. Avoid settings named “Full panel,” “Full-screen,” or “Stretch” if they expand the image to fill the display; those can distort a non-native-aspect image.
4K output is not the same as a 4K-sized super-wide image
A display may keep receiving its native 4K output timing while the GPU or an application places a smaller or differently proportioned image inside that output. In that case, the monitor receives a 4K signal, but the visible image does not fill the screen.

Choosing a custom super-wide output resolution is a separate matter. It depends on what the monitor, graphics hardware, driver, and connection support. “4K” describes a resolution class; it does not establish that a particular display accepts every super-wide resolution or refresh-rate combination. Check the monitor manual and your operating system’s display information for supported modes and the active signal.

AMD’s GPU-scaling guidance calls for a digital connection such as DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort, with the display set to its native resolution and refresh rate and a supported current driver. Its “Preserve aspect ratio” option keeps proportions, while “Full panel” expands a non-native-resolution image to fill the monitor. The available settings and procedure can vary with hardware and software revisions.

For NVIDIA, the documented scaling choices depend on the selected display and driver interface. Its “Aspect ratio” choice preserves proportions; “Full-screen” stretches the desktop to fill the display. Consult the controls shown for your specific display rather than assuming every driver version presents identical options.

Choose the right fit for the result you want

If the picture still stretches or the mode is unavailable
- Check the application first. Set its display or playback mode to preserve the aspect ratio, fit, or use the original size. A game or player may use its own scaling rather than the desktop setting.
- Check the GPU scaling control. Select the aspect-ratio-preserving option for the intended display. Confirm that the driver recognizes the display and exposes the control you expect.
- Check the monitor OSD. If its scaling mode is set to fill the panel, change it to an aspect-ratio-preserving or fit mode if one is available.
- Verify the signal before using a custom mode. Check the monitor manual and operating-system display information for supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations. If the custom mode is missing or rejected, do not assume the display will accept it just because it is 4K.
