An asterisk can be an ordinary character in a Wi-Fi network name. There is no universal Wi-Fi meaning for *, so it does not by itself indicate a hidden network, guest access, or a security warning. If you see one, check whether it is part of the configured name or just a marker shown by a particular device.

What the asterisk in a Wi-Fi name means

A Wi-Fi network name is technically called an SSID (Service Set Identifier). It is the name shown in available-network lists; Apple describes it as the name nearby users see. The Android Open Source Project’s wpa_supplicant source says the IEEE 802.11 standard does not restrict the SSID character set, so an asterisk can be an ordinary part of the name. The sources do not establish any standard special meaning for it.

That means you should not assume * signals a hidden or guest network, or that it warns you about security. A router interface or a client device may have its own display conventions or character restrictions, but those depend on the product. The exact device and screen determine whether the symbol is part of the name or an added annotation.

How to check whether the asterisk is part of the network name

  1. Compare another device. Check the same network in the Wi-Fi list on a second phone, computer, or tablet. If both show the asterisk in the same position, that is a useful clue that it may be in the SSID, though the router settings are a more direct check.
  2. Inspect the router settings. Open the router or access point’s wireless settings and look for the configured network name (SSID). If the settings show *, it is part of the configured name. Menu labels vary by manufacturer and model.
  3. Ask the network administrator. If you do not manage the router, the administrator can confirm the configured name. For a symbol that appears only on one device, consult that device’s documentation or support information; there is no universal asterisk annotation documented across Wi-Fi systems.

SSID character limits depend on the implementation

The Android wpa_supplicant source handles SSIDs up to 32 bytes in the cited formatting routine. A byte limit is not always the same as a count of visible characters, because some characters use more than one byte in certain encodings. Product documentation may express limits differently: for example, the TP-Link TL-WA901N V6 guide specifies a case-sensitive network name of up to 32 characters. Check the documentation for your router or access point rather than treating one product’s limit as universal.

Choose a clear name, but secure the network separately

An unusual character in an SSID does not authenticate users or encrypt Wi-Fi traffic. Use the router’s security settings and a strong network password; Microsoft recommends WPA3 when both the router and Windows PC support it. Apple also cautions that hiding an SSID does not prevent it from being detected or make the network secure.

For Apple devices, Apple recommends using one unique, case-sensitive SSID across supported frequency bands. It says separate names for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands can affect reliable connection behavior. Those are naming recommendations, not an explanation for an asterisk.
