In the documented Kingston SUV500MS case, the SSD’s ATA identify data (read with smartctl) reported 512-byte logical and 4096-byte physical sectors. A different result from parted appeared only when the drive was connected through an mSATA-to-IDE adapter and USB bridge; the direct mSATA-to-SATA path reported 512/4096. That points to translation or reporting by the adapter chain, not proof that the SSD itself uses 4096-byte logical sectors.
What the two sector sizes mean
Logical and physical sector sizes describe different layers of a storage device:
- Logical sector size is the block size presented to the operating system and applications. Legacy software commonly expects 512-byte logical sectors.
- Physical sector size is the NAND drive’s underlying access unit. Modern SSDs may report 4096-byte physical sectors while emulating 512-byte logical sectors for compatibility.
Therefore, a diagnostic result of 512 bytes logical / 4096 bytes physical is not contradictory. Seeing 4096 as the physical size does not establish that the SSD has 4096-byte logical sectors.
What happened with the Kingston SUV500MS
An August 2019 AnandTech forum discussion documented a Kingston SUV500MS being considered for replacement and cloning of an older car-navigation hard drive. The reported readings changed with the connection path:

| Connection path | Utility | Logical sector reading | Physical sector reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSD queried through ATA-capable diagnostic path | smartctl |
512 bytes | 4096 bytes |
| mSATA-to-SATA adapter | parted |
512 bytes | 4096 bytes |
| mSATA-to-IDE adapter, then USB | parted |
4096 bytes | 4096 bytes |
The discussion attributed the 4096/4096 result to the USB-IDE bridge’s host-facing translation or reporting. The poster later found that the mSATA adapter had initially been installed the wrong way round, adding a separate installation issue to the diagnosis. These observations apply to that particular drive and adapter chain; they are not a universal behavior of all mSATA, IDE or USB adapters.
How to verify the sector size on your own setup
- Record the complete connection chain. Write down the SSD model, every adapter, any USB enclosure or bridge, and the computer or legacy device used for testing.
- Query the drive’s own identify information. On Linux, run
sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdX, replacing/dev/sdXwith the correct device. Look for the logical and physical block-size fields. Some bridges do not pass ATA commands through; an error or incomplete output can therefore describe the bridge’s limitations rather than a failed SSD. - Check the host-facing view. Run
sudo parted /dev/sdX printand note the sector sizes shown byparted. Do not assume that this value is the drive’s native ATA report when a USB or IDE bridge is in the path. - Use a direct mSATA-to-SATA connection if possible. In the documented case, this path produced the 512-byte logical / 4096-byte physical result in
parted, matching thesmartctloutput. - Inspect module orientation and seating. Power down, remove the adapter, and confirm that the keyed edge connector and mounting screw position match the adapter’s markings. The forum poster’s later discovery that the adapter was reversed shows why this check matters.
- Retest through the actual target hardware. A car-navigation unit or other legacy host may impose its own capacity, partitioning or sector-size requirements. A result from a desktop USB test does not prove compatibility with that target.
Why an adapter can change what utilities report
Utilities see the storage device through the protocol endpoint to which they are connected. A direct SATA adapter can expose the SSD’s native ATA information, while an IDE bridge or USB bridge may translate commands and return its own block-size description. Partitioning tools then display what that host-facing endpoint reports.

This is why two readings can coexist without either tool being defective: smartctl may obtain the SSD’s identify data, while parted may be working from the bridge’s translated geometry. The more bridges in the chain, the less reliable a host utility’s sector-size report is as evidence of the SSD’s native configuration.
What this means for cloning or replacing a legacy drive
Do not reject a 512/4096 SSD automatically
A 512-byte logical sector is often the compatibility-friendly presentation expected by older software. The reported Kingston readings do not show a sector-size mismatch that, by itself, prevents use.

Do not choose a replacement from one adapter reading
A 4096/4096 result obtained only through an IDE-to-USB bridge is insufficient evidence that the SSD itself requires 4096-byte logical-sector support. Confirm the drive’s ATA data and test it on the destination hardware.
Keep the migration path as simple as possible
For diagnosis, prefer a direct mSATA-to-SATA adapter. An mSATA-to-IDE/PATA adapter can still be necessary when connecting to legacy hardware, but its bridge may alter the information visible to desktop tools.

Limits of the documented result
The evidence comes from one Kingston SUV500MS and one user’s adapter setup in an August 2019 forum thread. It is not a manufacturer compatibility statement, a controlled comparison of adapter models, or a current list of SSDs known to work with legacy systems. Adapter firmware, bridge chips, host BIOS behavior and the target device can all change the outcome.
