1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPossibly, but symptoms such as overheating, dropped connections, or unfamiliar settings do not prove a router compromise. Use a trusted device to check the router’s firmware support, DNS servers, remote-management access, and administrator account. Update supported equipment, disable unnecessary remote administration, change the administrator password, and replace any model that no longer receives security updates.
Signs that deserve investigation
The FBI identifies overheating, connectivity problems, and settings the administrator does not recognize as possible signs of router malware. Each can also result from ordinary hardware failure, interference, configuration errors, or an internet-service outage, so none is a standalone diagnosis.
- Unexpected DNS resolver addresses or other network settings
- Remote administration enabled when nobody intended to use it
- Unexplained firewall or port-forwarding rules
- Repeated instability together with unfamiliar configuration changes
- A router that is no longer supported by its manufacturer
Why DNS settings are important
Attackers can change a router’s DNS settings so requests go to malicious resolvers. Compare the listed DNS addresses with the values expected from your ISP or your deliberate network configuration. An unfamiliar resolver is a reason to investigate and secure the router; it is not, by itself, proof of a particular attacker or campaign.
What to do now
- Use a trusted device and record changes. If it is safe and practical, note unfamiliar settings and relevant dates before editing them. This is useful for explaining the incident to your ISP or account providers, but it is not a mandatory forensic process for every household.
- Identify the exact model and support status. Open the manufacturer’s official support page for the model and hardware revision. Check whether security updates remain available and install the latest official firmware. If the manufacturer has ended support or no longer provides security fixes, plan to replace the router with a supported model.
- Inspect DNS and management access. Verify DNS entries with your ISP or intended configuration. Disable remote administration if you do not need it. Review firewall and port-forwarding rules for services that expose the router’s management interface, and remove anything unrecognized after confirming it is not required by your setup.
- Secure administrator access. Replace default or suspected-compromised credentials with a unique, random password that is not reused on email, shopping, or other accounts. The FBI’s 2025 guidance describes 16-to-64-character passwords, but routers differ in their accepted length and characters; follow your model’s requirements.
- Reboot the router. The FBI recommends rebooting when suspicious activity is believed present. A reboot can interrupt active changes, but it does not prove that malware has been removed or that the device is clean.
- Protect related accounts. If router credentials, browsing traffic, or personal information may have been exposed, contact the affected service providers, change potentially exposed passwords from a trusted device, and enable account or transaction alerts.
When replacement is the right answer
Replace the router when its exact model is end-of-life or end-of-support, security firmware is unavailable, or you cannot reliably disable exposed management functions. Age alone does not prove compromise, and a newer router is not automatically safer simply because of its brand or advertised speed.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Decision factor | Keep and secure | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer support | Security fixes are still issued for the exact model. | The model or hardware revision is unsupported. |
| Firmware | Current official firmware can be installed. | No security update is available or installation repeatedly fails. |
| Remote exposure | Remote administration can be disabled or appropriately restricted. | Management exposure cannot be controlled. |
| Configuration | DNS, firewall, and port-forwarding settings can be verified and corrected. | Settings keep changing or cannot be trusted after remediation. |
| Suspected compromise | Indicators stop after updates, credential changes, and rebooting. | Suspicious behavior persists, especially on unsupported equipment. |
What the 2026 DOJ router case does—and does not—mean
In an April 7, 2026 announcement, the U.S. Department of Justice said Russian military-intelligence actors had exploited known vulnerabilities since at least 2024 to steal credentials from thousands of TP-Link routers worldwide, access many compromised routers, and manipulate DNS settings. FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks said the operation involved routers owned by unsuspecting Americans in more than 23 states.
That operation describes a specific threat and affected equipment; it does not mean every TP-Link router, or any particular reader’s router, was compromised. Check the support status, firmware, exposure, and settings of your own model rather than inferring risk from brand or geography.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
When to report or seek help
Contact your ISP or router manufacturer when you cannot verify DNS, firmware, or management settings. If personal information or account credentials may have been exposed, notify the relevant account providers promptly. The FBI advises reporting suspected cybercrime to a local FBI field office or the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3); use the official FBI and IC3 websites for current reporting instructions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not treat slow internet, heat, or one unfamiliar connected device as proof of hacking.
- Do not assume a DNS change identifies a specific attacker.
- Do not assume a reboot or factory reset guarantees malware removal. Follow the manufacturer’s model-specific reset and recovery documentation.
- Do not leave remote administration enabled for convenience when it is not needed.
- Do not reuse the router administrator password on other services.
The Bottom Line
Investigate unfamiliar DNS or management settings, update and lock down any supported router, and replace equipment that has reached end of support. Escalate quickly if related account credentials or personal information may have been exposed.
