If your TV sometimes disappears from a phone, casting app, or remote-control app, first check whether the TV has actually lost its Wi-Fi connection. A TV can remain online while local-network discovery is blocked because the phone and TV are on different networks, or because the router or extender isolates wireless devices. Find out which failure you have before changing settings or blaming the TV.
First determine whether the TV is offline or just undiscoverable
When the problem occurs, open the TV’s network-status screen. Menu names vary by manufacturer and model, but look for whether the TV is connected to the router, whether the signal is weak, and whether the TV has internet access. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes a weak Wi-Fi signal from a TV that connects to the router but has no internet. Samsung’s guidance likewise separates the TV-to-router connection from the router-to-internet connection.
Check the TV’s own streaming apps as another clue. If they work while your phone cannot find the TV, the TV may still be online and the fault may be with local discovery. If the TV’s apps also fail, troubleshoot its network connection first.
If the TV loses its Wi-Fi connection
Improve the wireless connection
Check the TV’s signal strength and its distance from the router. Walls, furniture, and other obstructions can weaken reception. Samsung recommends checking distance and obstructions; Sony also identifies weak signal as a connectivity issue. A connection that drops intermittently is more likely to need attention to signal or TV network settings than an app-discovery fix.

Update and restart
Check for a TV software update, then restart the TV and router. Sony recommends updating the TV and restarting or power-resetting the TV and modem/router. The exact update and restart steps depend on the model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for your TV rather than assuming one menu path applies to all sets.
Compare with other devices
Check whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi network. If several devices lose internet access, investigate the router or internet service. If the TV alone cannot connect, focus on the TV’s settings or contact its manufacturer. LG recommends comparing other devices and, as a diagnostic comparison, trying the TV with a phone hotspot. A hotspot test can help determine whether the issue is specific to the home network; it does not by itself identify the exact cause.

If the TV is online but an app cannot find it
Put the controller and TV on the same local network
Make sure the phone, tablet, or computer running the discovery app and the TV are on the same home network. For Google Cast, Google’s guidance calls for the controller and Cast device to be on the same Wi-Fi network. A TV on the main network and a phone on a guest Wi-Fi network may both have internet access but still be unable to discover one another.
For Google Home on iOS, check that the app has permission to access the local network. This is a relevant discovery check for Google streaming-device setup; it is not a universal setting for every TV app.

- Stay Safe Online: The wifi dongle supports WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA/WPA2 mixed encryption modes. Note: Make sure that the distance between the adapter and router should be within 30ft
Check guest Wi-Fi, isolation, and extender settings
Look in the router or extender settings for options named “AP isolation,” “client isolation,” or similar. Guest-network settings may also prevent devices from communicating with one another. Google advises disabling AP or client isolation for its Cast setup case because those settings can block discovery. Setting names and effects vary by router, so confirm what a setting does before changing it.
Google Cast Help explains that “UPnP (Universal Plug and Play), also known as multicast, allows for the discovery of UPnP enabled devices on the same Wi-Fi network.” This applies to UPnP-enabled devices; it should not be treated as a universal explanation for every TV or discovery app.

Use comparisons to narrow down the cause
- Try another phone or app: If one controller cannot find the TV but another can, check the first app’s permissions and settings.
- Restart the app and TV: This is a useful first check when the TV’s own network status remains normal.
- Check whether other devices are affected: Widespread connection problems point toward the router or internet service; a TV-only connection problem points toward its settings or support.
- Temporarily test Ethernet: If the TV has an Ethernet port and you can connect it to the router, compare its behavior over a wired connection. If it is stable on Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, investigate wireless coverage or the TV’s Wi-Fi behavior. A cable does not fix discovery blocked by separate networks or isolation settings.
Samsung lists wired Ethernet as an alternative way to connect a TV. Treat it as a diagnostic test or practical workaround where available, not as a required purchase.

Before contacting the TV manufacturer or internet provider, note what the TV’s network-status screen reports when the problem occurs, whether the TV’s streaming apps still work, whether other devices connect, and whether the TV is on the same network as the controller. If a wired connection works but Wi-Fi does not, report that comparison. If the TV is online but only one app cannot find it, include the app and phone operating system; the TV make and model, router configuration, and discovery method can change the relevant troubleshooting steps.
