The Thermalright SLK-947U’s documented problems are fitment problems, not a proven universal design failure. Historical users reported the heatsink’s metal base surround touching capacitors on an EPoX 8K3AE and a separate difficulty fitting it to a Shuttle AN35N Ultra. An Abit NF7-S Rev. 2.0 user also reported needing a NEO backplate. Treat these as board- and hardware-specific warnings: identify your exact motherboard revision, inspect the socket area with the system unplugged, and do not force the cooler if it cannot sit flat.
What the reported SLK-947U problems actually were
The principal complaint was physical interference around the CPU socket. In a 2003 AnandTech forum thread, a user said the SLK-947U’s metal surround near the base contacted capacitors on an EPoX 8K3AE motherboard. The same discussion mentions another user having a fit problem on a Shuttle AN35N Ultra. These are individual reports, not a measured failure rate or a complete compatibility list.
A separate AN35N Ultra discussion records uncertainty among participants. One participant said Thermalright support directed them to the product-specific compatibility list and reported that the 947 would not fit. Other replies were less certain, so the thread does not establish a universal answer for every AN35N Ultra revision or mounting kit.
Forum evidence from 2004 also says an Abit NF7-S Rev. 2.0 might require a NEO backplate. That is a model-specific historical report, not confirmation that every NF7-S board or every SLK-947U package needs one.

Why motherboard revision and mounting hardware matter
Socket A boards place capacitors, socket lugs and other components at different distances from the socket. The SLK-947U’s base surround and mounting hardware must clear those parts while the heatsink remains level. A board name alone is therefore insufficient; the revision, socket area layout and cooler hardware revision all matter.

How to check whether an SLK-947U fits
- Shut down and unplug the computer. Disconnect the power cord and allow the board to cool before removing the side panel or cooler.
- Record the exact board identity. Write down the manufacturer, model and revision printed on the PCB. Record which SLK-947U bracket, backplate and screws you have.
- Inspect the socket perimeter. Look for capacitors or other components that could contact the cooler’s base surround. Do not judge fit from a similar board, a photograph of another revision, or a similar Thermalright model such as the SLK-900A or 948U.
- Test the hardware without force. Place the mounting parts as intended and confirm that the cooler can lie flat. A bracket touching a capacitor, socket hardware or another component is a stop condition.
- Confirm the backplate requirement. For boards such as the Abit NF7-S Rev. 2.0, verify the required backplate from board- and cooler-specific documentation rather than relying on the historical NEO-backplate report.
- Check the fan clips separately. The retaining wires should reach the heatsink’s clip points and hook without bending them aggressively or levering against the motherboard.
- Stop if anything binds. Do not bend, cut or grind the bracket to make an uncertain installation work. Find documentation for the exact combination or use a cooler known to fit that board.
Fan clips and diagonal screw tightening
French-language forum posts show two recurring setup questions: how to raise and hook the SLK-947U’s metal retaining wires into the heatsink fan clips, and why an installation page called for diagonal tightening. The diagonal instruction means tightening the four spring-loaded screws in a cross pattern rather than fully tightening adjacent screws in sequence. Work gradually and evenly so the heatsink stays level.

The available historical material does not provide a verified, model-specific installation manual for the SLK-947U. If a wire cannot engage naturally, or engaging it makes the heatsink shift, release it and recheck the hardware and fan thickness instead of forcing the clip.
Could changing the fan disturb thermal paste?
One user claimed that repeatedly changing fans allowed the heatsink to move and pushed thermal interface material away from the processor. Another reported successful use and recommended tightening the four spring-loaded screws gradually and evenly. The evidence is anecdotal and contested; it does not prove a confirmed SLK-947U defect.

In practical terms, treat any disturbed seating as a new installation. If the cooler has shifted, remove it, clean both mating surfaces using a suitable process for your thermal paste, apply fresh paste, and reseat it evenly. Check that the base is flat and stable before powering on.
What the historical reports do—and do not—prove
- They establish that clearance problems were reported on particular boards, including the EPoX 8K3AE and Shuttle AN35N Ultra discussions.
- They do not establish a universal incompatibility with those entire model families.
- They provide no reliable fitment percentage, defect rate, temperature result or modern availability information.
- They should not be used to assume that the SLK-900A, SLK-948U or another similar heatsink has identical geometry.
- Thermalright’s current general support material does not, in the available evidence, supply a verified SLK-947U-specific manual or compatibility list; do not assume current instructions apply unchanged to this discontinued model.
If your board and cooler do not fit
When a capacitor or component is touched
Do not power the system and do not press the heatsink into place. Photograph the interference, note the board revision and compare the mounting hardware with board-specific documentation. Replacement with a cooler documented for that socket and board is safer than modifying the SLK-947U bracket.

When the backplate is missing
Do not substitute a random plate or hardware set. Confirm the exact mounting kit and whether the board requires a NEO or other backplate. Historical forum statements are leads for verification, not guaranteed parts guidance.
When the fan clips will not engage
Check the fan’s frame thickness, clip orientation and the heatsink’s clip points. If engagement requires excessive force or moves the base, stop and verify fitment before applying thermal paste.

When the cooler rocks after installation
Remove it and inspect for component contact, an incorrect bracket, uneven screw tension or damaged paste. Reseat with fresh thermal interface material only after the hardware can tighten evenly and the cooler sits flat.

Those details allow a fitment answer to be checked against the actual geometry instead of extrapolated from a different Socket A board.
