x16 is the number of PCIe lanes, not the link speed. A reading such as x8 Gen4 describes an eight-lane connection running at PCIe Gen4. Whether that is expected depends on your graphics card, the motherboard slot’s electrical wiring, lane sharing with other devices, and whether the monitoring tool reports the link accurately.

What does a PCIe x16 reading mean?

PCIe link width and link speed are separate properties. Width tells you how many lanes the connection uses: for example, x1, x4, x8 or x16. Generation identifies the signaling rate, such as Gen3, Gen4 or Gen5. Microsoft documents negotiated width and speed as distinct link-status fields; its listed rates range from 2.5 to 32.0 GT/s, while listed widths range from x1 to x32. These are technical values, not a measure of how common a particular GPU configuration is. Microsoft’s PCIe link-status reference

So a utility showing “x8” is reporting width, not a speed of “8x.” Read the full link mode, if available, and compare both width and generation with what your hardware should support.

Why might a graphics card show fewer than 16 lanes?

The card or slot may support fewer lanes

A graphics card’s documented PCIe interface and the motherboard slot’s electrical lane count determine the connection’s available width. A card can fit in a long, physically x16 connector even if that slot is electrically wired for fewer lanes. Check the specifications for your exact GPU and the motherboard manual’s description of the slot you are using; connector length alone does not establish electrical width. Other devices may share lanes

Some motherboards allocate lanes among slots or disable or reduce a slot’s width when particular M.2 drives or expansion cards are installed. The exact behavior is board-specific. For example, ASUS documents a W790 configuration in which using an M.2 device changes a graphics slot to x8. That example does not mean every M.2 drive reduces a GPU slot to x8. Check the lane-allocation table and notes for your board, including which connectors are populated. ASUS W790 BIOS manual

Firmware may be limiting the link

BIOS/UEFI settings can offer a PCIe link-speed or generation option. If the slot was manually set to a mode that limits operation, the reported connection may differ from what you expect. ASUS recommends checking the slot specification and BIOS PCIe operation-mode setting. Menu names and choices vary by board and firmware; consult your motherboard manual and use Auto or a generation supported by both devices when appropriate. How to check whether your reading is actually a problem

  1. Record the hardware and reading. Note the exact GPU, motherboard and CPU models, which PCIe and M.2 slots are occupied, and the utility and field showing the mismatch. Without these details, there is no reliable way to state the expected mode for your system.
  2. Separate width from generation. Record the complete link mode—for example, x8 Gen4—not just “8x.” Width and signaling generation are separate negotiated properties. Microsoft’s PCIe link-status reference
  3. Check card capability against slot wiring. Look up the GPU’s supported interface and the motherboard manual’s electrical width for the specific slot. Check notes for lane sharing and populated connectors, rather than relying on the slot’s physical length. Microsoft’s PCIe device compatibility guidance
  4. Review lane allocation and firmware. Compare your installed devices with the board’s lane-sharing table. Then check the BIOS/UEFI setting for that slot’s PCIe generation or link mode, following the board maker’s instructions. Restore Auto or another mutually supported setting if the slot was manually limited. ASUS PCIe slot and BIOS guidance
  5. Confirm the reading with an appropriate tool. If you have an Intel Arc graphics card, Intel warns that standard Windows Device Manager and Linux lspci output can show Gen1 x1 for certain Arc products. Use the alternate tools Intel specifies for those models before treating that reading as evidence of a faulty connection. Intel’s Arc reporting guidance

What to do if the mismatch persists

If the card’s documented capability, the slot wiring and the firmware setting all indicate a wider link than a suitable monitoring tool reports, follow the service instructions for your specific system. Check relevant error logs. If you are competent to work inside the computer, power it down and follow the manufacturer’s procedure before reseating the card or any riser; otherwise, ask a qualified technician. Test another suitable slot only if the motherboard manual says it can support the card.

AMD’s troubleshooting guide for its Pollara 400 server adapter recommends checking logs, reseating the card or riser, and trying another slot to help isolate a connection problem. Its diagnostic guidance is for a server adapter, not a consumer graphics card, so consumer GPU owners should use their own system vendor’s procedures. In that guide’s diagnostic approach, a fault that follows the card points toward the card, while one that remains with the slot points toward the system. AMD Pollara 400 troubleshooting guide

Details needed to identify the expected link mode

To determine whether a particular x8 or other reduced-width reading is normal, you need the GPU model, motherboard model, CPU, installed PCIe and M.2 devices, and the exact utility reading. The motherboard’s slot wiring and lane-sharing rules can change the answer even when the GPU itself supports x16.
