Windows 11 Dev Drive can speed up some developer tasks that are limited by disk activity, but “massive” gains are not guaranteed. Microsoft’s published results range from around 25% faster for selected disk-bound operations to an improvement of up to 43% in one tested repository; results varied by workload and did not apply consistently across projects. Dev Drive is most worth testing for Windows-based source repositories, package caches, build output, and other files involved in frequent reads, writes, or copies.

What is Windows 11 Dev Drive?

Dev Drive is a ReFS-formatted Windows storage volume intended for developer workloads. Microsoft recommends using it for source repositories and project files, package caches, build output, and intermediate files. It is a separate volume, not a switch that converts an existing volume in place: Microsoft’s setup documentation says the Dev Drive designation is made when the volume is formatted.

Dev Drive’s performance advantage depends on the work being done and the system’s configuration. It is not a general-purpose upgrade that makes every app or every part of a build faster. The Windows 11 setup requirements, recommended file placement, and security guidance are in Microsoft’s Dev Drive documentation.

How much faster can Dev Drive be?

Microsoft has published several performance figures, but they come from different tests and should not be combined into a single expected improvement:

Reported result Test context How to interpret it
Around 25% average improvement Microsoft’s Visual Studio Blog, 2023; selected disk-bound operations including cloning, building, copying, and package restore. Source A result for selected operations, not a promise that a project or build will be 25% faster.
14% faster builds; 28% total with CopyOnWrite Microsoft’s Engineering blog, 2023; full builds on an internal codebase with more than 500 C# projects. The methodology excluded the repository directory from Defender real-time antivirus scanning and did not use Defender performance mode. Source A specific internal build test with a particular configuration. The CopyOnWrite result is not a general Dev Drive-only figure.
Up to 43% improvement in the highest-performing repository case Microsoft’s Engineering blog, 2024; internal codebase tests. Microsoft said the highest result “did not replicate for all the repos under test.” Source The peak was repository- and workload-dependent, with repeated copying especially relevant to CopyOnWrite benefits.

These results show why measuring your own project matters. A workload with repeated file copying may benefit differently from one dominated by CPU work or other operations. A meaningful comparison should use the same project, machine, security configuration, and build or restore steps on both volumes.

Which files should you put on Dev Drive?

Microsoft’s guidance focuses on frequently accessed project data rather than moving every developer tool to the new volume.

How do you create a Dev Drive?

Microsoft’s documented prerequisites are Windows 11 build 10.0.22621.2338 or later, at least 8 GB of memory (16 GB recommended), at least 50 GB of available disk space, and local administrator permissions. Microsoft says Dev Drive is available across Windows SKU versions. Check current Windows and storage policy requirements before making changes to a managed PC.

  1. Choose the storage approach. In Windows Settings, go to System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Disks & volumes. You can create a new VHD, shrink an existing volume to make unallocated space, or use space that is already unallocated.
  2. Create the volume. Use the Dev Drive creation option in the Disks & volumes interface and follow the prompts to allocate storage and format it as a Dev Drive. Formatting creates the Dev Drive designation; an existing volume cannot simply be converted in place without formatting.
  3. Choose a drive location and move suitable project data. Put repositories, caches, build output, and intermediate files there. Leave developer tools and SDKs on C: unless you have evaluated the security implications of moving them.
  4. Measure your actual workload. Compare equivalent build, package-restore, or copy operations using the same project and configuration. Keep the volume that best fits your performance, capacity, and security needs.

Partition or VHD?

A physical partition generally performs faster because it accesses the disk directly. A VHD adds a storage layer and may have slightly lower performance, but it can be dynamically resized, moved, backed up, and used more portably. Choose based on whether direct disk access or flexibility matters more for your setup.

How does Dev Drive affect security?

Dev Drive’s trust designation can enable Microsoft Defender performance mode, which is designed to reduce scan overhead on trusted Dev Drive files while leaving real-time protection on. For the feature to apply, Microsoft requires a trusted Dev Drive, Defender as the primary antivirus solution, and the documented platform and security-intelligence version requirements. See Microsoft’s Defender performance mode guidance for current requirements.

Antivirus filters remain attached by default. Microsoft warns that a drive running without antivirus filters does not receive standard security scans. Disabling filters is therefore not a routine performance tweak: it changes the drive’s security posture. On work or school devices, enterprise policy may also control whether Dev Drive or related customizations are available.

Does Dev Drive help with WSL project files?

WSL can access files stored on Dev Drive, but Microsoft says not to expect Dev Drive performance gains when a Linux distribution accesses project files there. For best WSL performance, Microsoft recommends keeping WSL project files in the Linux filesystem. The WSL metadata mount option is unsupported on ReFS.

When is Dev Drive worth trying?

  • Consider testing it if Windows-based development spends meaningful time on repository operations, package restore, file copying, or disk-bound build work.
  • Measure before switching workflows if your projects are mostly CPU-bound, if the results do not justify allocating at least 50 GB, or if you rely on WSL project files stored on a Windows volume.
  • Keep security settings intact and compare performance with your normal Defender configuration rather than assuming results from a differently configured test will apply to you.
