Quantum3D’s eight-way VSA-100 design was a professional AAlchemy graphics board, not a consumer Voodoo5. A December 1999 interview with Quantum3D representative Kevin Payne described a board with “Up to 8 on a board, with up to 64mb per chip.” A later enthusiast reference identifies the eight-chip, 64 MB-per-chip configuration as the AAlchemy 8164 and a 32 MB-per-chip version as the AAlchemy 8132. Those names and configurations come from secondary historical documentation, while the interview is contemporaneous evidence of the planned specification.
What “8-way VSA-100” means
“Eight-way” refers to eight 3dfx VSA-100 processors working on one Quantum3D AAlchemy board. It does not describe an eight-way consumer card or a single VSA-100 with eight rendering pipelines. The VSA-100 was the processor used in 3dfx Voodoo4 and Voodoo5 products, but an AAlchemy system was a separate professional visual-simulation platform.
In the December 1999 TargetPC interview, Kevin Payne answered a question about the number of processors and memory with the exact wording: “Up to 8 on a board, with up to 64mb per chip.” The lowercase “mb” is preserved from the archived transcript.
Which Quantum3D boards are associated with eight VSA-100s?
A Czech 3dfx enthusiast reference identifies the eight-processor, 64 MB-per-processor configuration as the AAlchemy 8164. It also identifies an AAlchemy 8132 configuration with 32 MB per VSA-100. These model identifications are historical secondary-source claims, so they should not be treated as a complete Quantum3D product catalogue or as proof that every revision used identical components.

| Configuration | VSA-100 processors | Memory per processor | Simple aggregate of per-chip memory | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AAlchemy 8164 | 8 | 64 MB | 512 MB | Model and configuration reported by the 3dfx.cz enthusiast reference; aggregate is arithmetic from those figures |
| AAlchemy 8132 | 8 | 32 MB | 256 MB | Model and configuration reported by the 3dfx.cz enthusiast reference; aggregate is arithmetic from those figures |
The 512 MB and 256 MB figures above are sums of the stated memory attached to eight processors. They should not be read as a guarantee that software exposed all memory as one conventional, uniformly addressable pool.
Was an eight-chip board actually produced?
The strongest contemporaneous evidence located is an announcement-era interview: Payne described what AAlchemy4 could support and said “Up to 8 on a board.” The later 3dfx.cz reference identifies AAlchemy 8164 and 8132 boards and records a historical auction sale of one AAlchemy 8164 on 20 January 2004. That €1,059 amount is an old auction result for one reported board, not a current valuation or proof that a particular listing today is genuine.

No specific board revision has been inspected here, so photographs, labels, component counts, memory population, working condition and host compatibility still require verification on any physical example.
Why eight VSA-100s were unusual
Payne said that pushing toward even larger systems—he discussed a hypothetical 32-chip arrangement—ran into practical limits: board size, heat, power requirements and demand for other products. Those constraints explain why an eight-processor AAlchemy board should be understood as specialized visual-simulation hardware rather than an ordinary desktop upgrade.

The interview also stated that there were “No published benchmarks yet” at that time. Consequently, there is no substantiated performance number in the cited material for an eight-chip AAlchemy board, and it would be misleading to convert the processor count into a claimed frame rate or a ranking against Voodoo5 cards.
AAlchemy versus Voodoo4 and Voodoo5
VSA-100 is the common processor family, but the products serve different markets and should not be conflated.

| Characteristic | Quantum3D AAlchemy eight-way board | Typical 3dfx Voodoo4/Voodoo5 product |
|---|---|---|
| Processor arrangement | Up to eight VSA-100s on one professional board | Consumer-oriented product configurations with fewer chips |
| Example identity | AAlchemy 8164 or 8132, according to the secondary reference | Voodoo4/Voodoo5 models; not AAlchemy 8164 |
| Primary context | Professional visual simulation and specialized systems | Consumer 3D graphics |
| Performance evidence in the cited material | No published eight-chip benchmark was available in the December 1999 interview | The AnandTech Voodoo5 review discusses VSA-100-based consumer products, but its results do not establish AAlchemy eight-way performance |
| Interchangeability | Requires board-specific hardware, software and system support | Cannot be assumed compatible with AAlchemy drivers or system requirements |
Therefore, a Voodoo5 card should be described as VSA-100-related hardware, not as an eight-chip AAlchemy board.

The 3dfxarchive technical-reference index lists potentially useful historical material, including a 3dfx VSA-100 presentation dated 14 November 1999, a Quantum3D SimGL/OpenGL white paper dated 11 February 2000, a Quantum3D Heavy Metal user guide dated 26 January 2000, and later Quantum3D antialiasing and texture-compression documents. The index is a finding aid; its listings alone do not prove the compatibility, features or performance of a particular AAlchemy revision.

For a collector or restorer evaluating a board, verify the exact model marking, count the installed VSA-100 packages, document memory chips and connectors, and locate software intended for that board family. Do not infer operational status from rarity or from an auction description.
Quick Recap
What is established—and what is not
- Established by the 1999 interview: Quantum3D described AAlchemy4 as VSA-100-based and said a board could carry up to eight VSA-100s with up to 64mb per chip.
- Reported by the later enthusiast reference: the names AAlchemy 8164 and 8132, their respective memory configurations, and the 2004 auction report.
- Not established by these sources: a current market price, a guaranteed working example, a particular revision’s driver support, modern host compatibility, or an independently measured benchmark.
