Short answer: the available evidence does not show that a half multiplier is inherently bad on an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ with an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium. It also does not prove that every chip, BIOS, or memory configuration will be safe or stable. The only data is one user’s 2005 overclock report, so treat it as a configuration example—not a guarantee.

What the original comparison actually tested

The overclocker compared two settings that landed at almost the same CPU frequency:

Multiplier × reference clock Reported CPU speed Memory setting and reported speed Reported result
10.5 × 261 MHz 2,741 MHz DDR333; 211 MHz Nearly identical CPU score; nearly 500 MB/s higher memory bandwidth in a quick Sandra run
11 × 250 MHz 2,750 MHz DDR333; 194 MHz Nearly identical CPU score; lower reported memory bandwidth

These figures come from the original poster’s informal test in the AnandTech forum discussion. The CPU clocks differ by only 9 MHz, while the reported memory clocks differ much more. Because the test was a quick, single-user comparison rather than a controlled benchmark, it cannot establish that the half multiplier itself caused the bandwidth difference.

Does a half multiplier damage the processor?

Nothing in the documented discussion demonstrates physical damage or an inherent penalty caused by selecting 10.5× instead of 11×. The thread contains opinions and personal settings, not a controlled experiment, population study, or manufacturer statement about half multipliers on this processor.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The practical question is therefore stability: does the complete combination of multiplier, reference clock, memory divider, voltage, cooling, and board firmware remain reliable? A half multiplier can produce a different memory frequency when the board calculates dividers, so two settings with nearly equal CPU clocks may perform differently elsewhere. That is a platform-and-configuration effect, not proof that the half step is intrinsically harmful.

What stability evidence exists?

The original poster later wrote: “My X2 4800+ is Prime95 stable for 10+ hours @ 2750MHz (VCore 1.4625)” in the 2005 thread. This is a self-reported historical result, not an independent validation, and it does not predict what another X2 4800+ will tolerate.

The same discussion mentions an earlier 2750 MHz/1.475 V setup with an idle temperature reading of 36°C, up from 33°C. Those readings belong to a different post and voltage setting from the later 1.4625 V update. They were not validated laboratory measurements, and idle temperature alone cannot establish load safety.

How the hardware specifications should be interpreted

Processor support

ASUS lists the Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4800+ revision E6 as supported by the A8N-SLI Premium, with BIOS 1005 GO shown as the validated BIOS floor on its CPU support list. That confirms stock platform compatibility. It does not validate a 2.75 GHz overclock, a particular voltage, or any multiplier setting.

Power and temperature specifications

AMD’s archived Athlon 64 processor power and thermal data sheet lists ordering part ADA4800DAA6CD at 110.0 W TDP and gives a Tcase Max range of 49°C to 65°C (AMD, 2006). These are stock-part specifications with defined measurement conditions. They are not an overclocking voltage limit, and the Tcase range should not be converted into a universal “safe CPU temperature” rule for this modified setup.

What to check before choosing between the settings

  1. Confirm firmware and hardware: verify the processor revision, board BIOS, memory modules, and cooler are appropriate for this legacy Socket 939 system.
  2. Record each variable: write down multiplier, reference clock, memory divider, memory timings, VCore, load temperature, and test duration. Changing several at once makes the result difficult to interpret.
  3. Test CPU and memory separately: use a repeatable CPU workload and a dedicated memory test, then test the combined configuration. A short benchmark or a single successful boot is not stability evidence.
  4. Watch sustained-load behavior: monitor temperatures and throttling or errors during the full test, not only at idle.
  5. Recover methodically: if errors, freezes, or failed boots occur, return to the last known-good settings, reduce the reference clock or multiplier, or restore conservative memory timings before making another change.

Do not treat the forum’s 1.4625 V figure as a recommended target. The sources provide no authoritative safe overclocking voltage for this processor, and the reported Prime95 result belongs only to that individual chip and system.

Which configuration is better?

There is no universal winner from the evidence available. The 10.5× option produced a slightly lower reported CPU clock but higher reported memory speed and bandwidth in that user’s Sandra run. The 11× option produced 2,750 MHz with lower reported memory speed. Workloads that depend on memory throughput may react differently from workloads limited mainly by CPU frequency, and the posted benchmark was not replicated.

Choose the setting that is demonstrably stable in your own workload, keeps memory within its limits, and avoids unexplained errors. If both are stable, compare them with repeatable application tests rather than relying on the single quick Sandra result.

What this conclusion does—and does not—say

  • It does say that no inherent harm from a half multiplier is established for this specific case.
  • It does say that the reported 2.75 GHz result was one user’s claim, despite more than 10 hours of Prime95 testing.
  • It does not say that every Athlon 64 X2 4800+ will reach 2.75 GHz, tolerate 1.4625 V, or behave the same way.
  • It does not turn AMD’s 110 W TDP or Tcase range into an overclocking safety guarantee.
  • It does not make the 10.5× or 11× configuration universally best.
