If you spot a credit-card charge you did not make, contact your card issuer promptly through its official app, website, or the phone number on a statement. For a lost or stolen card, report it immediately. Reviewing transactions, securing account access, and knowing when to use a credit freeze can help you respond to the right kind of risk.
How credit-card fraud affects you
For a cardholder, fraud detection means noticing activity that is not yours and acting quickly with the issuer. Prevention includes protecting card and account details and securing access to your account. These steps address two different problems:
- Unauthorized activity on an existing card account: Review transactions, contact the issuer, and follow its dispute procedure.
- Someone trying to open new credit in your name: A credit freeze or fraud alert may help reduce that risk.
A freeze or alert does not monitor transactions on an existing card. For that, review account activity and statements and report suspicious charges to the issuer. The FTC’s guidance focuses on consumer actions; it does not establish the issuer-side detection signals or thresholds used to flag transactions.
What should I do if I see a charge I didn’t make?
- Check the transaction. Compare the charge with receipts and recent purchases. If you still do not recognize it, contact your card issuer promptly using its official app, website, or a phone number on a statement or card.
- Report the charge and ask what happens next. Explain which transaction you dispute, ask the issuer to secure the account if needed, and follow its instructions for disputing the charge. Unauthorized charges are among the billing errors addressed through the Fair Credit Billing Act process, according to the FTC’s guidance on using credit cards and disputing charges.
- Keep a record. Save relevant statements and receipts, note when you contacted the issuer, and keep any case or confirmation details. Follow up in writing when appropriate and retain a copy of your correspondence.
Do not wait to see whether an unfamiliar charge disappears before contacting the issuer. Prompt reporting helps preserve applicable protections and starts the issuer’s dispute process.

How do I report a lost or stolen credit card?
- Contact the issuer immediately. Use its official app or website, or call the number printed on a statement or card. Tell the issuer the card is lost or stolen and ask it to secure the account.
- Follow the issuer’s reporting and dispute instructions. The FTC recommends following up promptly in writing. Include identifying account information requested by the issuer, when you noticed the card was missing, and when you reported it.
- Save your records. Keep copies of messages or letters and note the date and details of your report.
The FTC says you are not responsible for unauthorized charges made after you report the card’s loss. If someone uses a credit card before you report it, the FTC describes the maximum potential liability for unauthorized credit-card charges as $50. The amount and protections here concern credit cards; debit-card rules and reporting timelines differ. See the FTC’s lost or stolen card guidance for the distinction.
Credit freeze vs. fraud alert: which should you use?
These tools are aimed mainly at reducing the risk of someone opening new credit in your name, not at detecting purchases on an existing card.

| Option | What it does | Cost and duration | How to place it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report, which can make it harder for an identity thief to open a new account. It does not affect your credit score. | Free; stays in place until you lift it. | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a freeze. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. | Free; lasts one year. | Place it with one of the three nationwide credit bureaus; that bureau must notify the others. |
The FTC explains both options in its credit freeze and fraud alert guide. Choose based on whether you want to restrict access to your credit report or ask businesses to take an extra identity-check step. Neither replaces checking your card account and contacting the issuer about a suspicious charge.
Ways to reduce the risk of card and account misuse
- Review activity regularly. Compare transactions and statements with your receipts, and contact the issuer about charges you do not recognize.
- Use multifactor authentication when available. It adds an extra step to signing in to your account.
- Do not share account details with unexpected callers. If a caller claims to represent your issuer, end the call and contact the issuer yourself through a trusted channel, such as its official app or the number on a statement.
- Keep card details and account records secure. Carefully dispose of paper records that contain card-related information. A cross-cut shredder is one possible way to destroy paper, but it does not detect fraud or replace account monitoring.
The FTC warns consumers not to buy credit-card “loss protection” insurance: offers to sell this coverage are scams, and federal protections already apply to unauthorized credit-card use. Read the FTC’s lost or stolen card guidance before paying for a service making that promise.
