The Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS is a 1.5 TB, 7,200 RPM desktop hard drive with a SATA 3Gb/s interface and 32 MB cache. Its specifications describe the model when new—not the condition or safety of any particular used drive. Before relying on one, verify its identity and firmware guidance by serial number, check its health, and make sure your connection supplies power for a 3.5-inch drive.

Capacity: what a computer may show
Seagate’s Serial ATA Product Manual lists 1,500 GB and 2,930,277,168 guaranteed sectors of 512 bytes each for this model. The manual cautions that accessible capacity varies with the operating environment and formatting, so a computer’s displayed capacity may differ from the headline 1.5 TB. Seagate’s manual does not establish one guaranteed displayed figure for every computer or configuration.

Firmware: verify the specific drive before updating
Seagate’s historical support page includes the ST31500341AS in a firmware update table, with BR-SD1B (EXE) and 4D8H-SD1B (ISO) formats. The page advises owners to use Drive Detect to verify the applicable firmware revision for the drive’s model and serial number. Treat that listing as model-specific support information, not an instruction to flash every drive with this model number.
The model number alone does not establish whether an individual drive needs an update or is affected by a firmware issue. Check Seagate’s current guidance for the exact model and serial number before attempting any firmware procedure; do not assume that a download or an older instruction applies to a particular unit.

Check the drive’s condition before trusting it
A datasheet cannot tell you whether a used example is healthy, and the model number does not establish remaining warranty. Seagate’s manual explains that SMART monitors selected attributes that may indicate degradation, but cautions: “Not all failures are predictable.” A clean SMART report is therefore not proof that the drive is safe or that it will not fail.
- Confirm the label shows the exact model, ST31500341AS, and note the serial number.
- Use Seagate Drive Detect and the serial-specific support information to verify firmware guidance and warranty status. Seagate says warranty inquiries require the serial number, model or part number, and country of purchase.
- Check SMART data and run appropriate diagnostics before putting the drive into service. Treat these results as evidence about condition, not a guarantee.
- Keep a separate backup of important data. Do not make a single old drive the only copy.
Seagate’s published specifications and support information do not establish the current condition of a particular unit or predict its remaining service life.

Connecting the ST31500341AS to a computer
The drive uses Serial ATA, and Seagate’s manual pinout includes 12 V power. A SATA data cable by itself does not power the disk. For internal installation, the computer needs a compatible SATA data connection and an appropriate power connection. For USB access, use an adapter or enclosure intended for a 3.5-inch SATA drive and equipped with its own suitable power supply.
A powered SATA-to-USB adapter can be convenient for connecting a bare drive for inspection; a powered 3.5-inch dock can make repeated access easier. Choose based on whether you need enclosure protection, how many drives you will connect, and the accessory’s power supply. These accessories provide a way to connect and inspect the disk; they do not repair media damage or firmware faults.

Should you keep, buy, or replace one?
For a drive you already own, base the decision on verified identity and firmware guidance, condition evidence, and whether you can maintain a separate backup—not on the model’s original specifications alone. For a used purchase, also weigh the seller’s return terms and any warranty that can be confirmed for that serial number. Marketplace availability and condition vary, and no current inventory or specific replacement model is established here.
If data on the drive is valuable and it is showing signs of failure, avoid treating a USB adapter or firmware update as a recovery method. Consider professional data recovery rather than relying on repeated attempts to access a failing disk.
