Short answer: McAfee’s privacy notice says WebAdvisor may scan, collect and store browsing information—including URLs, search information, traffic data, device IDs and IP addresses—and metadata about internet downloads, such as a file’s name and size. That confirms collection of download-related information. The cited notice does not establish that WebAdvisor uploads the complete contents of downloaded files, nor that every scan is performed entirely on your device.

Whether WebAdvisor is “safe” therefore has two parts: McAfee describes protections against malicious links, mistyped addresses and risky downloads, while its privacy terms allow collection of substantial browsing and device data. The protection claims are McAfee’s own descriptions, not independent effectiveness results.

What information does WebAdvisor collect?

The current New Zealand-region McAfee Privacy & Legal Terms page says that installing the WebAdvisor browser extension may allow McAfee to “scan, collect, and store” information about web browsing activity. The listed categories are:

Category Examples named by McAfee What the wording establishes
Browsing activity URLs, search information and traffic data WebAdvisor may handle information about sites visited and web activity.
Device information Device IDs and IP addresses The notice permits collection of identifiers and network information.
Download metadata Downloaded file name and size McAfee explicitly names metadata about internet downloads.

The policy uses “may,” so it describes permitted or possible collection under the notice, not a measurement of what every WebAdvisor version sends in every situation. Regional terms and product behavior can differ.

Does McAfee collect the downloaded files themselves?

Based on the cited language, you should distinguish between a file and information about that file:

  • Established: McAfee names download metadata, including the file name and size.
  • Not established by this notice: whether the full file contents are transmitted to McAfee during scanning.
  • Also not established: whether WebAdvisor sends file hashes or other per-file identifiers.

Do not interpret the disclosure as proof that complete files are uploaded, but do not assume that all analysis is local either. The available policy language does not answer that technical question.

What does WebAdvisor say it does?

On its UK product page, McAfee describes WebAdvisor as a free browser-protection product. Its listed functions include:

  • Misclick protection intended to warn about malware and phishing sites.
  • Typo protection for mistyped web addresses.
  • “Safer Downloads,” which McAfee says scans downloads and alerts you when a known risk is found.
  • A check that firewall and antivirus protection are active.
  • Color-coded safety information for links and search results.

These are vendor-described features. The material available here does not independently verify detection rates, false-positive rates, performance impact or whether every feature works identically across browsers and regions. Availability and compatibility should be checked for your browser and location.

Why might McAfee process this data?

The general McAfee notice and the embedded Privacy Notice for McAfee WebAdvisor (Mozilla) describe uses such as detecting malware, spam, suspicious activity, vulnerabilities and attacks; providing threat intelligence; operating and maintaining the service; improving products; advertising McAfee products; support; and research. The Mozilla-specific notice has an effective date of December 1, 2021, so it should not be treated as a newly issued notice.

The notice says information may be disclosed to McAfee group companies and service providers, in addition to other circumstances described in the policy. McAfee’s general retention wording says it keeps information for the minimum period needed for stated purposes, legal obligations and reasonable business or dispute-related needs. No fixed WebAdvisor-specific retention period is provided in the cited text.

What privacy rights may you have?

The Mozilla-specific notice describes rights that can include access, correction, portability, restriction, objection and erasure, subject to applicable law and exceptions. The exact rights and request process depend on your country or region. Consult the notice that applies where you live before making a request.

How should privacy-conscious users decide?

WebAdvisor may be reasonable when

  • You want an extra warning layer for suspicious links, mistyped addresses and downloads.
  • You accept that browsing, device and download metadata may be processed under McAfee’s terms.
  • You understand that the product’s protection claims are not a substitute for independent test evidence or cautious browsing.

Consider alternatives or removal when

  • Collecting URLs, search or traffic data conflicts with your privacy requirements.
  • You need a documented, product-specific retention period.
  • You require proof about whether file contents, hashes or other scan artifacts leave the device.

If you installed the extension only for a trial, review your browser’s extensions page and remove it when you no longer want its protection. Before installing or keeping it, read the current regional privacy terms and check the extension’s permissions and supported-browser information.

Bottom line: is McAfee WebAdvisor safe?

WebAdvisor is presented by McAfee as a safety tool, and its policy explicitly permits collection of browsing and device information plus download metadata such as file name and size. That makes it impossible to describe the product as privacy-neutral. The evidence does not show that complete downloaded files are uploaded, but it also does not prove that scanning is wholly local. Treat WebAdvisor as a trade-off: additional vendor-provided warnings in exchange for data collection allowed by McAfee’s privacy terms.
