AMD Renoir is the codename for the Ryzen 4000-era APU design. In the desktop, the Ryzen 7 4700G is its 8-core/16-thread example. “Monolithic” means the processor’s CPU cores, Radeon graphics and I/O functions are integrated on one silicon die; it does not mean the CPU has no internal core-complex organization.

What Renoir and the Ryzen 7 4700G are

Renoir refers to AMD’s Zen 2-based Ryzen 4000 APU family. AMD’s product specification lists the Ryzen 7 4700G as a desktop Ryzen 4000 Series processor, formerly codenamed Renoir, with eight CPU cores and 16 threads.

The 4700G’s published specifications are:

Specification Ryzen 7 4700G
CPU architecture Zen 2
CPU cores / threads 8 / 16
Base clock 3.6 GHz
Maximum boost clock Up to 4.4 GHz
Default TDP 65 W
Socket AM4
Memory support Dual-channel DDR4, up to 3200 MT/s
L3 cache 8 MB
Integrated graphics Radeon Graphics, 8 graphics cores at 2100 MHz

AMD’s July 2020 desktop Ryzen 4000G announcement independently gives the 4700G as an 8-core/16-thread, 65 W part with 3.6 GHz base, up to 4.4 GHz boost and eight graphics cores.

What “monolithic” means

One die for the major processor blocks

A monolithic APU places the CPU cores, integrated Radeon GPU and I/O logic on the same physical silicon die. Technical analyses of Ryzen Mobile 4000 describe Renoir as a traditional single-die design, and coverage of the desktop Renoir G-series likewise identifies the CPU, graphics and I/O as sharing that die.

Monolithic does not mean “one undifferentiated core block”

The eight Zen 2 cores still have internal organization into core complexes and shared resources. “Monolithic” describes how the major functional blocks are packaged physically, not how every transistor is arranged or whether the cores operate as a single indivisible unit.

How this differs from chiplet-based desktop Ryzen

Many chiplet-based desktop Ryzen processors separate the compute die (containing CPU cores) from a dedicated I/O die. Renoir instead integrates those functions with its graphics on one die. That changes the physical layout, data paths and design tradeoffs; it does not, by itself, establish a universal performance winner.

The cache tradeoff

The 4700G has 8 MB of L3 cache. The cited Ryzen 7 3800X comparison has 32 MB. A smaller cache can matter in workloads whose performance is sensitive to cache capacity and memory traffic, but cache size alone cannot predict total performance. Core behavior, clocks, memory configuration, graphics use and the software workload all affect results. No benchmark result should be inferred from the two cache figures.

What the integrated graphics changes

The 4700G includes Radeon Graphics with eight graphics cores rated at 2100 MHz. That allows a system to produce display output without a separate graphics card, provided the motherboard exposes suitable display connections. Graphics performance and suitability depend on the application, memory configuration and system settings; the specification does not establish a gaming or professional-workload ranking.

Do not confuse the 4700G with Renoir mobile parts

Renoir also appeared in mobile processors. For example, AMD’s Ryzen 7 4800U announcement describes an 8-core/16-thread, 15 W chip with a 1.8 GHz base clock and up to 4.2 GHz boost. Those are mobile specifications and must not be substituted for the desktop 4700G’s 65 W, 3.6/4.4 GHz figures.

OEM status and platform checks

AMD lists the Ryzen 7 4700G as OEM only. That designation means a listing may involve a complete system or an original-equipment channel rather than a standard retail boxed processor. Availability, condition, price and warranty can therefore vary.

How to interpret an 8C/16T Renoir specification

  1. Identify the model. Confirm that the part is the desktop Ryzen 7 4700G, not a similarly named mobile Renoir processor.
  2. Separate architecture from packaging. Zen 2 describes the CPU architecture; monolithic describes the one-die integration of CPU, graphics and I/O.
  3. Read the whole specification. Consider clocks, 65 W default TDP, 8 MB L3, DDR4 support and the integrated GPU together.
  4. Compare workloads, not labels. Core count or cache capacity alone cannot provide an overall performance ranking against a chiplet-based Ryzen processor.
  5. Validate the platform. Because AMD marks the 4700G OEM only, confirm the exact system, motherboard support and firmware before treating any listing as a viable build.
