Intel Management Engine (ME), now generally called Converged Security and Management Engine (CSME), is a microcontroller and firmware service built into some Intel platforms. Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) is a separate remote-management capability in the Intel vPro platform that runs on that foundation. ME presence does not prove that a computer supports AMT, and an Intel processor alone does not make a PC remotely manageable.
AMT can let authorized administrators inventory hardware, receive alerts, repair a system when its operating system fails, and sometimes use keyboard-video-mouse (KVM) control outside the operating system. Availability depends on the exact platform, OEM firmware, network interface, provisioning state, and security configuration.
ME, CSME, and AMT: the terms are not interchangeable
| Term | What it is | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Management Engine (ME) | An embedded microcontroller on some Intel chipsets. Intel says it loads code from system flash during initialization, runs a lightweight microkernel operating system, and can operate independently of the host operating system’s power state. | It provides platform services, but its presence does not indicate that AMT is available. |
| CSME | Converged Security and Management Engine, the newer terminology for the firmware platform that powers management and security functions. | Firmware version and generation matter when applying updates or interpreting security advisories. |
| Intel AMT | Intel Active Management Technology, a remote-management feature delivered as part of supported Intel vPro platforms and powered by CSME firmware. | It can provide out-of-band administration, but only on supported, enabled, and provisioned systems. |
| Intel vPro | A business-platform qualification that can include AMT and other hardware, security, and manageability features. | Look for vPro and AMT support on the exact PC model; neither is guaranteed by a generic Intel CPU or chipset. |
Intel’s overview of ME is available in What is Intel Management Engine?. AMT’s developer documentation describes the management functions in the Intel Active Management Technology SDK.
What Intel AMT can do
AMT is designed for IT administrators who need access below the host operating-system layer. Because the management engine can remain active independently of the OS, an administrator may be able to manage a machine whose operating system is crashed or not booting.

- ASUS-exclusive self-recovering BIOS technology for automatic system BIOS recovery from a verified backup
- ASUS COM debug header for more efficient troubleshooting
- Event log for capturing and managing detailed system information

Typical management functions
- Discovering and maintaining hardware-asset information.
- Receiving event and alert information.
- Repairing or reconfiguring a system after an operating-system failure.
- Using KVM controls on platforms that implement and enable that feature.
- Applying system-defense or access-control policies supported by the platform and management software.
On supported implementations, remote access may work while the computer is powered off if it remains connected to mains power and a supported network. That is a conditional platform capability, not a promise that every Intel PC can be reached over the internet.
How to tell whether a PC supports AMT
Use the exact computer or motherboard model, not just the processor name. Intel’s guidance says AMT is available on Intel vPro PCs, and its WebUI support article advises checking the specific device and confirming that AMT is active in firmware.
- Find the complete model number and, for a custom desktop, the motherboard model and revision.
- Check the manufacturer’s specifications for explicit Intel vPro and Intel AMT support. A listing that mentions only “Intel ME,” “MEI,” or a chipset does not establish AMT support.
- Review the OEM BIOS/UEFI documentation. AMT may need to be enabled there before any management console or WebUI can use it.
- Confirm that the platform’s network interface is supported. Features and provisioning options can differ between wired and wireless implementations.
- Ask the PC manufacturer or your IT administrator which AMT firmware generation, control mode, and management software the system uses.
The Intel AMT Web User Interface guidance is useful for checking a supported system, but reaching its interface still requires compatible hardware, enabled AMT, credentials, and network access.

Provisioning and control modes
AMT is not normally ready for unrestricted administration immediately after Windows is installed. Provisioning creates the configuration and trust relationship used by management tools.

Intel’s getting-started guide describes host-based configuration as provisioning into Client Control Mode. This mode is easier to initiate locally but has limitations compared with administrator-managed deployment.
Admin Control Mode
Remote configuration provisions a device into Admin Control Mode, which provides the broader management capability expected in enterprise deployments. Intel’s documented remote method requires a configuration server, suitable DHCP and domain settings, a provisioning certificate, and wired-LAN support. Intel also describes a separate staged process for LAN-less clients.

Firmware updates: use the OEM package
ME/CSME firmware is customized for the system. Intel explains that OEM customizations prevent it from supplying one universal ME firmware image for every computer. Identify the exact PC or motherboard and obtain the current BIOS/ME package and instructions from that manufacturer’s support page.
- Do not treat the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) driver as a firmware replacement.
- Do not use a firmware image intended for a different model or board revision.
- Use Intel’s version-detection tools for the relevant processor generation, then compare the result with the OEM’s advisories and release notes.
- Keep the system on reliable power and follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions; an interrupted firmware update can make a system unbootable.
Intel maintains current security information in Intel AMT and CSME Security Updates. Advisories and supported versions change, so check them together with the OEM notice before updating.

Transport security and newer-generation restrictions
Connection rules are generation-specific. Intel states that on specified Alder Lake and Raptor Lake systems using ME 16.1, insecure TCP/IP connections on port 16992 are no longer supported. Intel also states that AMT 19 on Arrow Lake does not support connections without TLS. These statements do not rewrite the behavior of every older AMT deployment; verify the exact generation, firmware, and management-tool requirements.
For any deployment, use the secure transport supported by that platform, restrict management traffic to authorized networks, and avoid exposing AMT interfaces directly to the public internet. Intel’s AMT Security Best Practices: Questions and Answers covers provisioning and security considerations.

Intel’s September 2023 AMT privacy statement says, “Intel AMT does not collect any personal information (for example, name, address, phone number, etc.) from the user.” It also says, “Intel AMT does not send any data to Intel Corporation.”

What AMT is not
- It is not present on every Intel-based computer.
- It is not enabled merely because Windows shows an Intel MEI driver.
- It is not an automatic internet-accessible backdoor; remote use requires supported hardware, firmware configuration, provisioning, credentials, and network reachability.
- It is not harmless by default: AMT is a privileged administration surface and must be secured like any other remote-management system.
- Installing a generic Ethernet adapter, driver, or downloaded firmware cannot add AMT to hardware that does not support it.
Choosing a PC for AMT
If you need out-of-band management, choose a business-class Intel vPro computer whose manufacturer explicitly lists AMT for the exact model and configuration. Confirm the network interface, supported AMT generation, firmware-maintenance process, and your management software’s provisioning requirements before purchase. A standalone ME claim is not an adequate substitute for documented vPro/AMT support.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: ME/CSME is the embedded platform engine; AMT is the separately supported vPro remote-management feature built on it. Verify the exact model, enable and provision AMT intentionally, secure its transport and accounts, and obtain firmware only from the PC manufacturer.
