For a PC monitor, RGB is usually the safest starting point, while YCbCr 4:4:4 can be equally clean when the source and display negotiate it correctly. The labels describe different parts of a video signal: RGB and YCbCr are color representations; 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 describe chroma resolution; and full or limited describes numeric range. A washed-out picture is usually a range or picture-mode mismatch, not proof that YCbCr is inherently worse.

What the settings actually mean

RGB and YCbCr are color representations

RGB carries separate red, green and blue components. YCbCr carries luma (brightness) plus blue-difference and red-difference chroma components. A graphics card, television or monitor may convert between these representations before displaying the image, so the output label alone does not determine visible quality.

4:4:4 is chroma resolution, not a competing color model

YCbCr 4:4:4 retains full horizontal and vertical chroma resolution; it is not subsampled. YCbCr 4:2:2 keeps half the horizontal chroma resolution, while 4:2:0 keeps half the horizontal and half the vertical chroma resolution. Subsampling can save link bandwidth, but fine colored edges—especially text—can lose detail.

Full and limited are numeric ranges

For RGB, “full” uses code values 0–255 and “limited” uses 16–235, as documented in NVIDIA Control Panel help. The source and display must agree. Sending full-range data to a display expecting limited range, or the reverse, can make blacks look gray, crush shadow detail, or clip highlights.

Which is better: YCbCr 4:4:4 or RGB?

Neither is universally better. Compare the signal on separate axes instead of treating the names as one quality scale.

Axis Choices What it changes
Color representation RGB or YCbCr How color information is encoded; the receiving device may convert it.
Chroma resolution 4:4:4, 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 Whether color detail is preserved or subsampled.
Quantization range Full or limited How black-to-white code values map to displayed levels.
Mode capability Resolution and refresh rate Whether the link has enough pixel-clock or bandwidth capacity.
Display behavior Input support and picture mode Whether the display accepts, converts or alters the signal.

For desktop text and computer work

Use RGB with the range expected by the display when it is available at your desired resolution and refresh rate. Full-range RGB is typically appropriate for a PC monitor that explicitly supports it; a television may instead expect limited range. Check the display manual rather than assuming.

For televisions and video playback

YCbCr 4:4:4 can be appropriate when the television is designed for that input and its picture mode preserves chroma detail. If the link cannot carry the selected mode, a driver or device may offer 4:2:2 or 4:2:0. Those lower-sampling modes reduce chroma data and can be more noticeable on desktop text than on ordinary video.

When bandwidth is the deciding factor

Resolution and refresh rate can force a compromise. NVIDIA’s Linux 430.40 driver documentation describes a configuration in which RGB 4:4:4 is overridden by YCbCr 4:2:0 when the current mode exceeds the GPU or display pixel-clock capability and both endpoints support the alternative. That is a driver-specific example, not a rule for every GPU, operating system or display.

Why the screen looks washed out after switching

Range mismatch

The most common cause is a full/limited disagreement. For example, a source sending limited-range values to a display set for full range can produce lifted blacks; the opposite mismatch can crush dark and bright detail. Set the source and display to matching expectations, then verify with a black-level or near-white test pattern.

Picture-mode processing

Displays can apply different processing to PC, Game, Movie or HDMI picture modes. AMD notes that many current displays automatically convert color-code data, so changing RGB versus YCbCr may have little visible effect, although a particular picture mode can still look washed out. Select the mode recommended for the input and disable unnecessary dynamic contrast or “black level” processing while diagnosing.

Unsupported or converted input

A television or monitor may accept one format at a given resolution but internally convert it, or silently change the negotiated format. Inspect the display’s information panel and the GPU control panel after every mode change; do not rely solely on the setting you selected.

A reliable setup procedure

  1. Read the display manual. Record supported RGB and YCbCr formats, range options, chroma requirements and any PC or Game HDMI mode.
  2. Connect directly. On Radeon systems, AMD’s Pixel Format workflow is described for direct HDMI or DisplayPort connections; adapters and converters are not supported by that procedure.
  3. Choose the target mode first. Set the intended resolution and refresh rate before comparing formats, because a higher-bandwidth mode can change what the driver offers.
  4. Set the format. Start with RGB for computer use, or select YCbCr 4:4:4 when the display documentation recommends it for the chosen input.
  5. Match the range. In NVIDIA Control Panel, choose Full or Limited RGB to match the display. NVIDIA warns that forcing Full on a monitor that cannot display it can produce incorrect colors.
  6. Check the result on text and test patterns. Look for colored fringes on small text, gray rather than black shadows, clipped highlights and unexpected changes when switching picture modes.
  7. Recheck after changing refresh rate or HDR. Reopen the GPU and display information panels; a new mode may have negotiated a different format or range.

Vendor-specific cautions

NVIDIA

NVIDIA exposes RGB range controls in Control Panel. Its documented Linux driver behavior allows a pixel-clock-limited mode to fall back from RGB 4:4:4 to YCbCr 4:2:0 when supported by both endpoints. In the cited Linux documentation, YCbCr 4:4:4 is limited-range only; do not generalize that restriction to every NVIDIA platform or driver.

AMD Radeon

AMD’s current Adrenalin support guidance recommends consulting the display manual because supported pixel formats vary. Its article, updated November 8, 2024, says many modern displays automatically convert color-code data, so one format may have little or no observable effect; this does not override a display’s particular input or picture-mode behavior.

How to interpret a forced 4:2:0 selection

If the driver selects 4:2:0 only at a high resolution or refresh rate, first compare the same display at a lower refresh rate or resolution. If 4:4:4 returns, the change is likely a link-capability constraint rather than a color-quality preference. Keep 4:2:0 only if the resulting text and picture are acceptable or if the target mode cannot be carried with higher chroma resolution; otherwise reduce the mode or use a connection and display input rated for the required bandwidth.

Bottom line for common choices

  • PC monitor and sharp text: Prefer RGB at a matching range; use 4:4:4 when YCbCr is required and text remains clean.
  • TV input documented for YCbCr: YCbCr 4:4:4 is reasonable when the TV’s PC/Game mode and range are configured correctly.
  • Washed-out image: Check full versus limited range and picture mode before changing color representation again.
  • High refresh or resolution: Verify the negotiated format; a bandwidth-limited driver may select 4:2:0.
