Yes, Linux can serve as a daily-driver PC, but the LTT challenge shows that success depends on your specific games, hardware and everyday workflows. Linus Sebastian and Luke Lafreniere used Linux as their primary home and gaming system for about a month. Their experiment was valuable because it tested ordinary friction—not just benchmark performance—including distribution choice, anti-cheat games, phone transfers, network storage, remote access and recovery media.

What the LTT Linux challenge was

The project began with choosing a Linux distribution and trying to run a game, then expanded into a month-long daily-driver and gaming experiment. The finale framed the experience as frustrations accumulating while Linux was used at home. A month is long enough to expose recurring workflow problems, while still being a time-bounded trial rather than proof that every Linux setup behaves the same way.

This was a lived-in primary-PC test, not a synthetic benchmark. The relevant question was whether Linux could handle normal work and gaming tasks that appear throughout a week.

What the continuation actually tested

The later continuation provides a practical checklist for anyone considering a switch:

  • Launching applications automatically at boot.
  • Moving files locally between a phone and the PC.
  • Performing a simple video edit.
  • Exporting the finished video to a network share.
  • Remotely accessing the Linux computer.
  • Playing a game that uses anti-cheat.
  • Creating a USB for BIOS flashback.

These tasks matter because daily-driver compatibility is broader than opening a browser or installing a game. A setup can work well for gaming yet become inconvenient when a phone, NAS, remote-session client or motherboard recovery procedure enters the picture.

What the challenge says about choosing a Linux distribution

For a newcomer, distribution selection is itself an early decision point. It happens before application and game compatibility are fully evaluated, and it can add uncertainty to installation, drivers, desktop behavior and troubleshooting. The LTT experience should therefore not be read as a verdict on one universal “Linux experience.” Different distributions, desktop environments, hardware combinations and software versions can produce different results.

A sensible way to choose

  • Start with a mainstream distribution whose documentation and community support match your hardware.
  • Check the exact desktop applications and games you use, rather than relying on a general Linux compatibility claim.
  • Test your graphics driver, audio devices, Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter, Bluetooth accessories, printer and displays before erasing Windows.
  • Keep a recovery path—such as a Windows installer or system image—until the Linux setup has survived your normal routine.

Gaming: the anti-cheat question comes first

Gaming was central to the experiment, and anti-cheat support was tested explicitly. Compatibility is therefore not just a matter of whether a game can launch through a Windows-compatibility layer. The title’s anti-cheat system may allow Linux, deny it, or behave differently after an update.

Before switching for gaming

  1. List the multiplayer games you actually play, including occasional titles.
  2. Check each game’s current Linux and anti-cheat status from its developer or publisher.
  3. Separate single-player games from competitive online games; their compatibility risks are often different.
  4. Install a test system on a spare drive or separate partition and verify login, matchmaking, voice chat, controllers and updates.

Do not generalize one successful or unsuccessful title to all games. Anti-cheat support is an explicit go/no-go criterion for the individual game.

Linux versus Windows for a daily-driver decision

Decision area Linux in the LTT-style test Windows baseline What to verify yourself
Setup and discoverability Distribution choice and unfamiliar settings can add decisions for newcomers. Most new PCs arrive with a familiar, vendor-supported setup. Installation steps, driver availability and where common settings live.
Games and anti-cheat Some games may work, but anti-cheat is a specific compatibility gate. Windows is the expected target for many PC games and their anti-cheat systems. Every multiplayer game, launcher, update path and peripheral.
Hardware and peripherals Results depend on the exact distribution, kernel, drivers and device. Hardware vendors commonly provide Windows-first support. GPU features, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, printers, webcams, audio and displays.
Phone and file workflows Local phone transfer must be tested rather than assumed. Phone connection and file-transfer behavior is familiar to many users. Your phone model, cable or wireless method, and file permissions.
Network shares Exporting media to a network share is a real workflow to validate. Network-share behavior is generally familiar in Windows environments. NAS protocol, credentials, mount persistence and large-file transfers.
Remote access Remote access works only when the chosen server and client fit your needs. Remote-management options are widely documented for Windows. Login, display handling, audio, file transfer and access outside your home.
Recovery and BIOS tools A BIOS-flashback USB may require a separate, carefully prepared procedure. Motherboard vendors commonly document Windows-based utilities, while firmware recovery still depends on the board. Your motherboard manual, USB format requirements and a second working computer.
Command-line work Some troubleshooting and guides may involve terminal commands. Many common fixes can be completed through graphical tools, though advanced work may also use a terminal. Whether you are comfortable copying commands, reading logs and undoing changes.

Everyday workflows the challenge makes visible

Phone-to-PC transfers

A phone connection is a basic test of cable support, file permissions and the desktop’s file manager. Confirm that your phone appears reliably, that you can copy files in both directions and that large transfers do not silently fail.

Video editing and network export

A simple edit tests application availability and hardware acceleration. Exporting to a network share adds authentication, permissions and sustained-write concerns. Test the complete path—from importing footage to opening the exported file from another device—instead of checking only whether the editor installs.

  • Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space

Remote access

Remote access is part of normal maintenance for many households. Verify that the Linux PC can be reached after reboot, that the correct user can authenticate and that the remote session provides the display, clipboard, audio and files you actually need.

Boot applications and automation

Starting applications automatically sounds minor, but it reveals how much configuration is exposed through the desktop’s graphical settings and how much requires a separate startup mechanism. Record the settings you change so they can be restored after a desktop or distribution update.

BIOS flashback and recovery media

The challenge included creating a BIOS-flashback USB, an important edge case because firmware recovery is performed before the operating system is available. Your motherboard manual is authoritative for the required filename, USB filesystem, port and button sequence. Do not assume that a USB prepared on Linux—or Windows—will satisfy every board’s requirements.

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
  • Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
  • Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)

Prepare a recovery plan

  • Keep the motherboard manual and the exact firmware file available offline.
  • Use a known-compatible USB drive and follow the board’s formatting and naming instructions exactly.
  • Have a second working computer available if the primary PC cannot boot.
  • Back up important data before firmware changes.
  • Do not interrupt power while a flashback operation is running.

How to run your own safer trial

  1. Inventory your dependencies: list games, launchers, work applications, phone-transfer needs, network shares, remote-access requirements and recovery tools.
  2. Test without deleting Windows: use a spare SSD, a separate partition or a live environment for initial hardware checks.
  3. Recreate a normal week: perform the same file transfers, edits, exports, calls and gaming sessions you normally do.
  4. Test failure paths: reboot, disconnect the network, reconnect the phone, access the PC remotely and prepare recovery media.
  5. Measure friction, not just success: note workarounds, terminal commands, missing features and updates that break a previously working task.
  6. Keep an exit route: maintain backups and installation media until the system has proved dependable for your own workload.

Who should and should not switch based on this evidence

Linux is a reasonable daily-driver candidate if you are willing to choose and learn a distribution, verify your hardware, and test each game and workflow that matters. It is a riskier immediate replacement if a particular anti-cheat multiplayer game, vendor-specific peripheral utility or firmware procedure is essential and has not been verified.

The LTT challenge demonstrates the value of sustained, ordinary use: Linux can cover much more than a technical demo, but the remaining friction is concentrated in compatibility details and recovery habits. Treat the participants’ month as a checklist for your own PC—not as a universal pass or fail for Linux.
