Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 16.12.2 was a historical AMD driver and ReLive software release. Its notes describe fixes for FreeSync borderless-window behavior, ReLive installation and recording, Multi-GPU game problems, Radeon Settings startup, VP9 decoding, and Wi‑Fi latency—but they also document substantial issues that remained open. AMD’s Radeon R9 Fury archive lists a 407 MB package and a release-date field of January 9, 2017, while a contemporaneous AnandTech forum reproduction is dated December 20, 2016. The available records do not explain that difference, so neither date should be treated as an uncontested launch date.
What Radeon Software 16.12.2 was
Version 16.12.2 was a Radeon driver/software package, not a new graphics card. AMD’s archived Radeon support page places it among older Radeon downloads and identifies the package as “Crimson ReLive Edition 16.12.2.” The release covered both display-driver behavior and Radeon ReLive capture features.
| Archive detail | Recorded value |
|---|---|
| Package | Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 16.12.2 |
| Package size | 407 MB |
| AMD archive release-date field | January 9, 2017 |
| Detailed notes reproduction | AnandTech forum post dated December 20, 2016 |
The detailed issue list below comes from the AnandTech reproduction of the period release notes. AMD’s old release-notes endpoint now redirects to its general driver page, so the reproduction is the usable record of the historical text rather than evidence that the full notes remain displayed on AMD’s current site.
What 16.12.2 listed as fixed
FreeSync and display behavior
- Borderless-fullscreen applications could suffer performance problems when dynamic content or background applications were active on a secondary display. The notes suggested minimizing other applications on the primary desktop or on non-primary extended displays if the problem continued.
Radeon ReLive installation and capture
- Installation could fail on some configurations.
- Instant Replay could fail to re-enable after a content-protection interruption.
- Captured audio could occasionally play back in slow motion.
- The cursor could stutter in recordings during periods of low on-screen activity.
- Screenshots could not be captured from secondary displays.
- Recording or ReLive overlay toggling could fail when Frame Rate Target Control was enabled. The documented workaround was to disable Frame Rate Target Control while using ReLive.
Multi-GPU and game-specific behavior
- Battlefield 1 could flash or show corruption with RX 400-series Multi-GPU configurations.
- Dota 2 could show corruption when task-switching while recording in a Multi-GPU setup.
- In League of Legends, the ReLive overlay or toolbar could fail to launch or record when the game ran in Administrator Mode with borderless-windowed fullscreen.
- Enabling ReLive could cause a secondary GPU to leave its low-power state.
Other software and network fixes
- Radeon Settings could fail to load at boot on some configurations.
- Some Radeon Settings and ReLive translations were corrected.
- Chromium could fail to use hybrid VP9 decoding in some circumstances.
- Some Wi‑Fi adapters could experience unusually long ping times.
These bullets describe conditions AMD reported for particular configurations; they do not mean every system had each problem or that the package was independently tested for this article.

Known issues that remained
Display, graphics, and installation issues
- Some FreeSync borderless-fullscreen problems remained.
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and World of Warcraft could flicker or perform poorly on first launch when FreeSync was enabled.
- Multi-GPU systems using tiled MST 4K or 5K displays could hang during installation or reboot unexpectedly.
- Titanfall 2 could show black-square corruption on some Graphics Core Next products.
- FIFA 17 could hang during launch or show a black screen on some Hybrid Graphics or PowerXpress mobile systems.
- Radeon Settings could omit display details when used with AMD X-Connect.
- The mouse cursor could intermittently corrupt on Radeon RX 480.
Radeon ReLive issues
- Xbox DVR could conflict with ReLive.
- ReLive could fail to install, hang, or fail to record on AMD APU products.
- Battlefield 1 could flicker or lose performance while recording on GPUs with 4 GB or less of VRAM.
- Very long single recordings could flicker.
- The first frames of recordings from Universal Windows Platform applications could contain minor corruption.
- Settings could not be changed while Instant Replay was active. The workaround was to disable Instant Replay, change the settings, and enable it again.
- Vulkan applications could hang during ReLive recording.
- ReLive did not notify users when available disk space was running low.
Practical troubleshooting for systems that matched the notes
- For borderless-display slowdowns: minimize background applications on the primary desktop or other extended displays and check whether the behavior changes.
- For ReLive overlay or recording failures: turn off Frame Rate Target Control, then retry the capture. For League of Legends, avoid Administrator Mode with borderless-windowed fullscreen when testing the overlay.
- For settings locked by Instant Replay: disable Instant Replay, change the ReLive options, and re-enable Instant Replay afterward.
- For Multi-GPU installation problems: treat a tiled MST 4K/5K display arrangement as a risk condition and plan for a possible hang or reboot rather than assuming the installation is safe.
- For long recordings: monitor free disk space manually because this release did not provide a low-space warning, and consider shorter recording segments.
How to interpret the release-date discrepancy
The December 20, 2016 AnandTech forum date shows when the detailed notes were reproduced contemporaneously. AMD’s R9 Fury archive separately displays January 9, 2017 as the package’s release-date field. Because the consulted records do not establish why those dates differ, the safest description is that the notes were circulating in December 2016 and AMD’s archive now labels the package with a January 9, 2017 date.

Only as historical documentation. The notes describe one 2016-era software build and do not establish current Windows compatibility, present-day Radeon support status, or whether any listed behavior still occurs in modern drivers. They also do not provide a complete compatibility matrix. Use the document to identify what AMD said it fixed or left open at the time, not as a recommendation to install an obsolete package on a current system.
