Yes. A SATA-to-USB adapter can connect a 2.5-inch SATA SSD to your computer for a supported cloning workflow. Samsung’s migration instructions specifically describe connecting the new SSD through a SATA-to-USB adapter, then selecting it as the target drive in the migration utility. Confirm that your SSD uses the SATA interface and that your cloning software recognizes USB-connected drives before you begin.

What the adapter does in an SSD clone

The adapter provides an external USB connection for a SATA SSD, so the drive does not have to be installed in an internal SATA bay during the clone. In Samsung’s documented procedure, the USB-connected new SSD is the target drive. The existing internal drive remains the source.

A SATA-to-USB adapter is a physical connection, not a guarantee that every cloning program supports every source-and-target arrangement. Software detection, licensing and drive-eligibility rules still apply.

Choose the adapter for the SSD interface

SSD type Correct connection approach What to avoid
2.5-inch SATA SSD SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure Assuming any USB cable carries SATA data without a SATA bridge
mSATA SSD mSATA-to-SATA or mSATA-to-USB converter, as applicable Using a standard 2.5-inch SATA adapter without checking the connector
M.2 SATA SSD An adapter that explicitly supports M.2 SATA Assuming an M.2 PCIe/NVMe adapter is interchangeable
M.2 PCIe/NVMe SSD M.2 PCIe/NVMe-to-USB adapter or enclosure Using a SATA-only adapter

Samsung’s support guidance identifies separate converter requirements for mSATA and M.2/NVMe drives. Match the adapter to both the drive’s connector and its protocol; “M.2” alone does not identify the interface.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to 2.5in SATA Adapter Cable for SSD & HDD, UASP (EC-SSHD)
  • 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
  • USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
  • USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
  • Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device

How to clone a SATA SSD over USB

  1. Identify the drives. Confirm the source is the disk you are currently booting from and that the replacement is a compatible SATA SSD with enough capacity for the data being copied.
  2. Connect the target. Attach the replacement 2.5-inch SATA SSD to the computer with the SATA-to-USB adapter. Use the adapter’s required power connection if it has one.
  3. Open your cloning utility. Install or launch the software you have chosen. Some vendor utilities impose eligibility requirements; for example, Crucial’s Acronis True Image for Crucial requires a qualifying Crucial SSD to be connected when the utility is installed or launched.
  4. Rescan and identify the target. Refresh the drive list if necessary, then select the USB-connected SSD as the target. Check model, capacity and partitions carefully before confirming; selecting the wrong disk can overwrite your source.
  5. Start the clone and leave both drives connected. Samsung’s SSD Data Migration User Manual warns: “Never disconnect the drive while cloning is in progress.” Prevent sleep, hibernation or accidental cable removal until the utility reports completion.
  6. Install or boot from the clone. Shut down, move the cloned SSD into the computer’s internal drive connection when appropriate, and follow your computer and cloning software instructions to verify it or set the new disk first in BIOS/UEFI boot priority. Menu names and keys vary by computer.

Checks before you start

  • Verify whether the replacement is SATA, mSATA, M.2 SATA or M.2 PCIe/NVMe.
  • Confirm the adapter supports that exact interface and form factor.
  • Check that the cloning utility can see a USB-connected target and that any vendor-drive requirement is satisfied.
  • Make an independent backup of important files; cloning is not a substitute for a backup.
  • Ensure the target has sufficient capacity for the source data and understand how the software handles partitions.

Common problems and what they mean

The target does not appear

Reconnect the adapter, check its power, then use the utility’s refresh or rescan command. If the operating system also cannot see the SSD, troubleshoot the adapter, cable, power and drive connection before blaming the cloning software. A drive that appears in the operating system but not in the utility may be blocked by that program’s compatibility or licensing rules.

The software rejects the drive

Read the utility’s current requirements. Crucial’s Acronis FAQ, for example, requires a qualifying Crucial SSD; other programs have different policies. Physical USB connectivity does not bypass those rules.

The clone finishes but the larger SSD has unused space

Some cloning workflows copy the original partition sizes without automatically expanding them. Kingston documents this as a possible outcome when cloning to a larger drive. Use the cloning program’s resize option, or extend the appropriate partition afterward with a suitable partition-management tool, following its documentation.

The computer will not boot from the cloned SSD

Verify that the clone completed, that the SSD is connected internally as required by the computer, and that BIOS/UEFI boot priority points to it. If the machine has legacy-versus-UEFI or encryption-specific requirements, follow the operating system and cloning utility’s recovery guidance rather than repeatedly recloning.

When USB is the wrong choice

Use an internal SATA connection or another interface-specific enclosure when the adapter cannot supply the required power, the cloning utility does not support the USB arrangement, or the SSD is not actually SATA. Kingston’s advice to connect an SSD directly to system ports concerns firmware updating; it should not be treated as a general prohibition on cloning over USB.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT)
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
