A loose metal screw can short a motherboard if it bridges conductive points, touches the chassis from the wrong location, or becomes trapped beneath the board. The result can be harmless, intermittent faults, a failed boot, or serious component damage. Do not turn the computer on while the screw may still be inside; shut down, disconnect power, find the screw, and inspect the board and standoffs first.
Why a loose screw is dangerous
PC motherboards contain exposed conductive areas, solder joints, traces and mounting hardware. A screw that touches two points that should remain electrically separate can create an unintended path for current. It can also scrape the solder mask, damage a trace, or press against the back of the PCB.
Dell repair guidance warns that “Loose screws left inside your device can cause short circuits and severe damage.” Microsoft gives similar advice for Surface devices: do not leave loose screws or small parts inside. The risk is conditional: no authoritative source establishes a percentage chance of permanent damage, and a screw that never contacts circuitry may cause no immediate symptom.
What to do before inspecting the PC
- Shut down normally if possible. If the screw is visibly moving or touching circuitry, switch off the power supply immediately and unplug the AC cable.
- Remove all external power. Turn the PSU switch off, unplug the AC lead, and disconnect peripherals. Hold the case power button briefly only as a discharge step when appropriate for your system’s service procedure.
- Do not probe an energized board. Never use a metal tool inside a powered computer.
How to find and remove the screw safely
Inspect the obvious areas first
Remove the side panel and use a bright flashlight. Check the case floor, expansion-slot area, cable channels, drive bays and the edges of the motherboard. Look for the screw around fans, power connectors and other places where it could have rolled.

Use a pickup tool only with power disconnected
A magnetic telescoping pickup tool can retrieve a ferrous screw after the system is fully unplugged. Keep the tool away from powered components, magnets and sensitive media. Do not drag it across the board.
Do not rely on shaking the case
iFixit notes that a screw or other small object can become wedged tightly between the motherboard and chassis and may not rattle when the case is shaken. If you cannot locate it, remove the graphics card and other parts that block inspection. If necessary, remove the motherboard and check the tray underside; this is the reliable way to verify that no conductive object is trapped beneath it.

Inspect for damage and incorrect standoffs
- Look for scratches, scraped solder mask, damaged copper traces, bent contacts, scorch marks, melted plastic and damaged connectors.
- Check the motherboard underside as well as the visible top side. A hidden screw can short the board against the tray without producing noise.
- Verify that every brass standoff lines up with an actual motherboard mounting hole.
- Remove any extra standoff. ASUS warns that a standoff with no corresponding hole can touch the back of the PCB and cause damage.
ASUS also identifies scratches affecting solder points, copper tracks, traces or screw holes as examples of customer-induced physical damage. Do not continue testing a board with obvious heat or mechanical damage.

Test with a minimal POST setup

Disconnect storage drives, extra memory, USB devices, add-in cards and other nonessential hardware for this test. Use the motherboard’s debug LEDs or other diagnostic indicators. If the minimal setup reaches POST, reconnect the removed devices one at a time, testing after each addition. This isolates a damaged or incorrectly installed part.
Choosing the next step

When professional repair is the safer option
Stop and seek qualified repair if you see smoke, sparking, scorching, melted plastic, lifted traces, damaged connectors or other heat damage, or if the computer repeatedly shuts down immediately after power-on. A technician can test the board without repeatedly exposing a damaged circuit to power. For laptops and compact systems, manufacturer service documentation is especially important because batteries and tightly packed components increase the risk of accidental damage.

Preventing another dropped-screw short
- Work with the case unplugged and positioned so removed screws cannot roll into the chassis.
- Use a magnetic parts tray or labeled container for screws during assembly.
- Install only the standoffs required by the motherboard’s actual mounting holes.
- Before closing the panel, use a flashlight to check the case floor and the area beneath board edges.
