My pick is Einstein@Home. It has the strongest documented case for working with BOINC’s screensaver system, while the official BOINC directory lists unusually broad desktop, mobile, ARM, Raspberry Pi and GPU support. If your priority is the most interactive graphics ever documented by a BOINC project, SETI@home remains the visual benchmark. Climateprediction.net is the best fit for a climate-science theme.

Why Einstein@Home is the safest recommendation

BOINC provides the screensaver framework, but each project’s application must expose graphics to it. BOINC’s screensaver documentation records successful testing with Einstein@Home, making it a more defensible current choice than projects mentioned only in user recommendations. The official BOINC project directory also lists Einstein@Home across a wide range of platforms and processor types, including GPUs.

That combination matters: attractive graphics are useful only when the project has runnable work, a compatible application and a graphics component that BOINC can display. Einstein@Home therefore wins on documented reliability and compatibility rather than on a standardized visual-quality score—no authoritative source publishes one.

How the leading projects compare

Project What its graphics are known for Why choose it Important qualification
Einstein@Home Documented successful testing with BOINC’s screensaver mechanism; broad platform and GPU support in the BOINC directory. Best all-round choice when you want the highest likelihood that project graphics will appear. Visual content still depends on the current application and work units.
SETI@home Interactive graphics window and BOINC screensaver mode, with translucent rotating panels, mouse-controlled rotation and zoom, and GPU-assisted rendering. Best historical choice for hands-on, information-rich visualization. Its documented graphics page describes the experience, but current task availability and compatibility must be checked before relying on it.
Climateprediction.net Listed in BOINC screensaver documentation as successfully tested; an Earth-science climate project. Best alternative if you would rather watch climate modelling than astronomy imagery. Graphics depend on the project application that is currently distributed.
Rosetta@home Frequently mentioned by community users as a visually appealing project. Worth considering if its biomedical science interests you. Those comments are anecdotal, not a measured comparison or proof of screensaver support.

What makes SETI@home’s graphics distinctive

SETI@home’s official graphics documentation says, “SETI@home graphics show information about the data analysis and about your account and team.” It describes translucent panels that rotate and can be manipulated with the mouse, including zooming. The same documentation says GPU-assisted rendering should not significantly slow computation on most computers.

This makes SETI@home the clearest answer if “best” means the richest documented interactive display. It is a historical visual benchmark, however, not proof that every current SETI@home installation will show graphics or receive work today.

Choose by science theme instead of spectacle

For astronomy and gravitational-wave research

Choose Einstein@Home. Its documented BOINC screensaver testing and broad hardware coverage make it the practical default for an astronomy-themed display.

Rank #2
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (2GB)
  • Broadcom BCM2711, Quad core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC @ 1.5GHz
  • 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online

For biomedical research

Rosetta@home is a reasonable candidate if protein research matters more to you than a documented graphics feature set. Treat community praise as personal opinion rather than a ranking.

How BOINC screensavers actually work

Installing BOINC does not guarantee a permanent project-specific animation. The client can display graphics from one of the tasks currently running, and not every graphics application supports the screensaver method. The project application, the work unit, your operating system and available CPU or GPU resources all affect what appears.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
  • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
  • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
  • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
  • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
  • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
  1. Install the current BOINC client from the official BOINC download page.
  2. Add the project you want through BOINC Manager and allow it to download a compatible application and tasks.
  3. Enable BOINC’s screensaver or graphics option in the client’s preferences.
  4. Let a task run, then wait for the operating system to invoke the screensaver. If the task has no graphics component, BOINC may show nothing project-specific.
  5. Check the project’s application and task-status pages before switching projects solely for visual reasons.

Common reasons no graphics appear

  • No current work: the project may be attached but have no downloadable tasks.
  • Unsupported application: a project can run successfully without exposing a screensaver graphics mode.
  • Platform mismatch: the project may support your CPU but not your operating system, GPU or selected application.
  • Resource settings: BOINC may be paused, restricted to run only while idle, or configured to suspend graphics-related tasks.
  • Graphics hardware limits: older drivers or insufficient GPU support can prevent rendering even when computation works.

These checks are more reliable than judging a project from screenshots or forum comments. BOINC’s official project directory is the place to verify the project’s identity, science area, sponsor and supported platforms; the project itself is the authority for current applications and work availability.

Bottom line

Pick Einstein@Home for the best documented all-around BOINC screensaver choice. Pick SETI@home if interactive, information-dense graphics are your definition of “best,” and pick Climateprediction.net when climate science is the deciding factor. In every case, confirm current work and application support, because BOINC can display only the graphics supplied by the task that is actually running.
