On Chrome desktop, select the passage, right-click it, and choose Copy link to highlight. Paste the resulting URL into your message. When the recipient opens it in a compatible browser, Chrome can jump to and emphasize that text. The option is not guaranteed to appear for every selection or webpage.
On Android, select the text, tap Share, and choose the app or destination where you want to send the link.
Link to highlighted text on Chrome desktop
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Drag across the word, sentence or passage you want to reference.
- Right-click the selected text.
- Choose Copy link to highlight.
- Paste the copied link into an email, chat, document or other destination.
Google Chrome Help describes this as creating “a shareable link that goes directly to specific highlighted text on a page.” See the official desktop instructions at Google Chrome Help.
What the recipient sees
When the link is opened by a compatible user agent, the page can scroll to the matching passage and emphasize it. The page itself does not need to be edited, and the recipient can still read the surrounding content.

Remove a highlight from a copied link
Chrome also documents a Remove highlight option in the context menu for linked highlighted content. Use it when you want to open or reshare the page without the text emphasis.
Share a precise passage from Chrome on Android
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Touch and hold the word or passage, then drag the selection handles to cover the text.
- Tap Share.
- Choose the messaging, email or other app where the link should go.
Android uses the share sheet rather than the desktop right-click menu. Google’s Android instructions are available at Google Chrome Help. Google also describes ways to reshare a highlight or remove it after opening the linked page.

Why the URL contains unusual text
Chrome uses the Web Text Fragments format. The selected words are placed in the URL fragment after #:~:text=. GoogleChromeLabs documents the general form as:
#:~:text=[prefix-,]textStart[,textEnd][,-suffix]
- textStart identifies the beginning of the match.
- textEnd, when present, identifies the end of a longer selection.
- prefix and suffix provide nearby context when needed to distinguish one occurrence from another.
This syntax explains why the link can target text without a special anchor in the webpage’s HTML. Actual scrolling and highlighting depend on the browser and page implementation; do not assume identical behavior in every browser.

When “Copy link to highlight” is missing
Google says the feature may not work for the selected content when the menu action cannot be selected. Try these checks:

- Reselect a contiguous passage in the page’s main text instead of a control, image, embedded viewer or other interactive element.
- Shorten the selection and try again, then expand it if necessary.
- Reload the page and repeat the selection.
- Check that you are using Chrome’s page context menu, not a browser, extension or website menu that replaces it.
There is no documented guarantee that every word, page type or embedded document can produce a text-fragment link.

Practical limits to keep in mind
- Selection support varies: A page can contain text that Chrome cannot use for this action, so “any word” is a goal rather than a guarantee.
- Text can change: If the publisher edits or removes the wording, the fragment may no longer find the intended match.
- Browser behavior differs: Text Fragments are a browser feature, and other browsers or embedded webviews may not scroll or highlight in the same way.
- It is still a normal webpage link: The recipient may need access to the page, including any login or subscription required by that site.
A quick sharing checklist
- Select the exact passage, including enough words to identify the intended occurrence.
- Use Copy link to highlight on desktop, or Share after selecting text on Android.
- Paste the link into the destination app.
- Open the pasted link yourself when the passage is critical, and confirm that it reaches the expected text.
