If a Windows 10 program does not appear in the uninstall list, throws an error, or remains after removal, identify whether it is a desktop program or a Microsoft Store app, then work through Windows’ normal uninstall options. For a desktop program that still refuses to uninstall, Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is the next focused step. Avoid deleting program files or registry entries by hand.
Identify the app before troubleshooting
Windows handles traditional desktop programs and Microsoft Store apps differently. The Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is aimed at desktop programs; Microsoft directs Store-app issues to separate guidance. Some apps built into Windows cannot be uninstalled, and some apps do not offer an uninstall option in Settings.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle change does not mean the uninstall paths below have stopped working. Check Microsoft’s current support options if you need help with Windows itself.
Try the normal uninstall options
Use whichever route lists the app. If one route has no uninstall option or produces an error, try another.

Restart and check for repair options
Restart the PC and try the uninstall again. If the program offers Repair or Change, you can try that option before removing it. Windows may show Repair and sometimes Reset for supported apps, but these controls are not available for every program.
Use Microsoft’s troubleshooter for a desktop program
If a desktop program still will not uninstall, run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter and follow its prompts. Microsoft says it can address common issues such as corrupted registry keys, incomplete uninstall data, and blocks that prevent removal through Programs and Features. It is not a guarantee that every program can be removed.

If the program is missing from the troubleshooter’s uninstall list, it may ask for the program’s product code. Microsoft notes that locating this code in an MSI property table typically requires a tool used by IT professionals. If you cannot provide it, do not guess or edit the registry manually; contact the program publisher for help.
Check whether another app or service is interfering
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs, which can help test whether another service or app is interfering with the uninstall.

Keep malware and Windows damage separate from an uninstall failure
If you suspect malware
If the program looks suspicious or you believe it is malware, scan the PC with Windows Security or another trusted security product. An ordinary uninstall is not a malware-removal procedure.

If Windows itself may be damaged
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows system files and components; they do not uninstall a program. Use them only when there are signs of wider Windows corruption or Microsoft support directs you to do so. Microsoft’s documented sequence is to run DISM first and then System File Checker in an elevated Command Prompt:
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow.
See Microsoft’s instructions for repairing missing or corrupted system files for the full procedure.

Reserve Windows recovery for broader problems
Resetting or reinstalling Windows is a major step for a problem affecting one program. Consider recovery only when there is evidence of a broader Windows problem and less disruptive options have not resolved it. Microsoft advises starting with the least disruptive recovery option; some choices can remove apps or settings or cause data loss. Back up important files before proceeding, and consult Microsoft’s Windows recovery options guidance before choosing one.
