Short answer: The Android app described by CyberScoop in September 2017 was a free, open-source Bluetooth scanner aimed at a specific skimmer configuration—not a universal detector. CyberScoop reported that it looked for broadcasts identified as HC-O5, using the password 1234, at an approximate 10–15-foot range. The app’s current availability, Android compatibility and effectiveness have not been verified.
What the app was designed to find
CyberScoop reported on September 20, 2017, that Nate Seidle, CEO of SparkFun, created an Android app called Skimmer Scanner after local police asked him to examine three skimmers found near gas pumps. The app scanned for a Bluetooth broadcast associated with the devices he examined.
The report identified that signal as HC-O5 and said the devices used the Bluetooth password 1234. It described an approximate detection range of 10–15 feet. Those details apply to the skimmers examined in that report; they are not a specification for all gas-pump skimmers or a guaranteed range for every Android phone.
Why “detect” needs qualification
A Bluetooth scan can reveal a compatible radio signal nearby, but it cannot establish that every pump is safe. A skimmer may use different hardware, different settings, no Bluetooth radio, or a location and shielding that prevents a phone from seeing it. The cited report does not establish that the app detected external and internal devices alike, works with current Android releases, or remains available.

How an internal pump skimmer works
CyberScoop described an internal skimmer installed between a card reader and the pump controller. Seidle called a skimmer “basically a man in the middle attack.” In his description, the device listens to the reader’s clear-text serial traffic at 9,600 bps, records that traffic in external flash memory, and then forwards the same traffic to the pump controller.
That arrangement lets the pump complete a transaction while the skimmer retains card data. A phone-based Bluetooth scan addresses only the wireless signal used by the particular devices examined; it does not inspect the reader’s wiring or prove that the payment path is uncompromised.

Historical app versus practical pump-safety steps
| Approach | What it can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Skimmer Scanner, as reported in 2017 | Look for the reported HC-O5 Bluetooth broadcast near a pump, with an approximate 10–15-foot range. | Targeted one reported configuration; present listing status, maintenance, permissions, compatibility and performance are unverified. |
| Visual and physical inspection | Spot a loose, damaged or mismatched reader and signs that an access panel has been opened. | Does not prove that an unseen internal device is absent. |
| Payment and account precautions | Reduce PIN exposure, avoid a suspicious pump, and help limit damage if data is stolen. | These actions reduce risk or speed response; they are not a guarantee that a pump is safe. |
How to check a gas-pump reader
The FTC’s consumer guidance recommends these checks:
- Look at the pump’s access panel. It should be closed and should not show signs of tampering.
- Compare the card reader with readers on nearby pumps. A mismatched appearance can be a warning sign.
- Gently test the reader. Do not use it if it moves unusually.
- Report a suspicious reader and use another pump. If you remain concerned, pay inside instead.
- When using a debit card, choose the credit option so you do not enter a PIN at the pump.
The FTC does not recommend Skimmer Scanner or claim that a consumer detector can certify a pump as safe.

What to do if your card may have been skimmed
- Monitor bank and card accounts for unfamiliar transactions.
- Contact the bank or card issuer promptly if you see suspicious activity or believe the card was exposed.
- Follow the issuer’s instructions for blocking, replacing or disputing the card and transactions.

The 2017 report linked to a Google Play listing, but current listing status was not established. There is also no verified information here about updates, permissions, Android-version support or present-day detection performance. Treat references to Skimmer Scanner as historical context, not as a current recommendation to install an app or rely on a phone as a skimmer detector.

The reported app was an inventive response to a specific Bluetooth-enabled skimmer design. It may have helped identify that signal within the reported range, but it was never evidence that all skimmers could be found. Today, the dependable guidance in the cited material is to inspect the pump, avoid anything suspicious, consider paying inside, protect your PIN and monitor your accounts.
