The Volla Phone 22 is an older, privacy-focused Android handset whose most tangible strengths are a replaceable battery, expandable storage and the choice of operating systems. But it is not an easy current buy: Volla lists it as sold out, and UBports says it is not supported by the current Ubuntu Touch release. Consider it only if you find a used unit in good condition and can verify its software, apps and network compatibility for yourself.
What the Volla Phone 22 offers
Volla announced the Phone 22 in 2022 as a phone built around alternative software choices, including Volla OS and Ubuntu Touch. Its hardware is a dated mid-range configuration, while features such as a self-replaceable battery and microSD expansion may matter more to buyers who value repairability and local storage over newer internals.
The specifications below are listings, not independent performance or quality tests. Volla advertises the storage, SIM and battery details; UBports lists the processor, memory, display and camera specifications.
| Component | Published specification |
|---|---|
| Processor and graphics | MediaTek Helio G85 (MT6769Z), with 2 Cortex-A75 cores at 2.0 GHz and 6 Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz; Mali-G52 MC2 graphics, according to UBports’ device listing. |
| Memory and internal storage | 4 GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB eMMC, according to UBports. |
| Display | 6.3-inch IPS display, 1080 × 2340 resolution (410 ppi), according to UBports. |
| Battery | 4500 mAh removable lithium-polymer battery, according to UBports; Volla describes it as self-replaceable on its product page. |
| Rear cameras | 48 MP f/1.8 main camera and 8 MP ultra-wide/macro camera, as listed by UBports; Volla also advertises the 8 MP ultra-wide/macro lens on its product page. |
| Front camera | 16 MP, according to UBports. |
| SIM and expansion | Dual SIM and microSD expansion up to 512 GB, according to Volla. |
| Dimensions | 157.5 × 75 × 10.4 mm, according to UBports. |
Resolution and megapixel counts do not establish image quality, and battery capacity does not tell you how long a particular used phone will last. No controlled camera, endurance, performance or network tests are established here.

Volla OS: what the privacy features mean
Volla describes Volla OS as open-source, Google-free Android and lists F-Droid and Aurora as app-store options. Its product page also describes a Springboard text field, privacy controls and a security mode that can restrict apps and network destinations. These are manufacturer descriptions of product features, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that every Android app will work.
Choosing a phone without Google services does not by itself prevent data collection by apps or services you install. Before relying on the Phone 22, check whether your essential apps work with the exact OS build on the device, including any dependencies on Google Play Services, push notifications or account sign-in.

Volla’s release notes identify Volla OS 13 as available for the Phone 22 and include dated maintenance entries. A Phone 22 entry dated 25 June 2025 lists the June 2025 Android security update. That documents update history, but it does not establish a guaranteed support period, a regular update schedule, or the patch level currently installed on an individual handset. See the Volla OS release notes and check the phone’s own update screen before buying.
Ubuntu Touch: check support before choosing it
Ubuntu Touch was part of the Phone 22’s original appeal, but historical compatibility should not be confused with current release support. As of the UBports device page checked on 27 September 2026, the Volla Phone 22 is explicitly described as “not supported by the current Ubuntu Touch release.” The page also contains references to older 20.04 Focal and 16.04 Xenial releases; those do not establish that a current supported release is available. Check the UBports Phone 22 device page again before making a purchase or planning an installation.

Volla provides separate manuals for the Phone 22 running Volla OS and Ubuntu Touch, plus source-code downloads for kernel variants on its Phone 22 downloads page. Documentation and downloadable source are useful resources, but neither proves that an operating system is receiving current updates.
Is the Volla Phone 22 still available?
Volla’s current product page marks the Phone 22 “Sold out.” That means the manufacturer page does not offer current stock; it does not prove the model has been formally discontinued, rule out a future batch, or confirm third-party availability. No current price or seller stock is established here.

If you find a second-hand unit, treat its condition and configuration as part of the purchase decision, not as details to sort out afterward.
- Confirm the exact model and variant, installed operating system, bootloader state and whether the seller permits returns.
- Check battery condition and whether a compatible replacement battery is actually available where you live. Volla advertises self-replacement, but that alone does not establish current spare-part supply.
- Test the apps and services you need on that unit and OS, rather than assuming Android app compatibility.
- Verify SIM bands, VoLTE and carrier support with your carrier for your country. The published specifications do not establish compatibility with a particular network.
- Check storage availability and expansion requirements. Volla advertises up to 512 GB microSD capacity; confirm card compatibility before buying a specific card.
- Compare the asking price with the phone’s age, battery health, software-update situation, return rights and warranty.
What independent experience can—and cannot—tell you
A quidsup video review published on 16 October 2022 describes one reviewer’s experience: setup and data migration were difficult, and a contacts-app sharing problem made the phone “almost unusable” for that reviewer, who returned to an older Pixel. This is a dated individual account, not representative evidence of a defect across Phone 22 devices or later software versions. It is a reason to test setup, migration and contact sharing during any return period, not a prediction of what every buyer will encounter. See the quidsup review.

Who should consider it?
It may suit you if
- You specifically want to experiment with Volla OS or other alternative mobile software and are comfortable checking current release status yourself.
- You value a replaceable battery, dual SIM or microSD expansion more than having newer hardware.
- You are buying a used unit at a price that reflects its age and can test it thoroughly before committing.
Look elsewhere if
- You need a phone with confirmed current Ubuntu Touch support.
- You depend on guaranteed security-update timing, current app compatibility or a defined manufacturer support period.
- You need verified camera quality, battery endurance, carrier compatibility or performance; the listed specifications do not answer those questions.
Volla founder Dr. Jörg Wurzer described the multi-OS concept in the company’s 25 April 2022 launch release as a way for users to try Ubuntu Touch and separate personal and professional data. That is useful context for the phone’s original pitch, not evidence of a present-day security certification or current Ubuntu Touch support. Read the 2022 launch release for the original framing.
Verdict
The Volla Phone 22 remains an interesting niche handset on paper: its battery is designed for self-replacement, it supports microSD expansion, and it was built to offer alternatives to conventional Android software. But sold-out manufacturer stock and the absence of current Ubuntu Touch support are substantial caveats, while the available specifications do not establish how it performs today. It is best approached as a used, enthusiast-focused device—not a straightforward recommendation for a primary phone unless its exact OS, apps, network fit and condition meet your needs.
