A remote-code-execution flaw disclosed in January 2025 could let a crafted link run commands in a Lightning AI Studio terminal, potentially affecting files and cloud credentials available to that workspace. The headline phrase “shut down essentially everything you own” describes potential impact—not a reported attack outcome. The flaw had reportedly been patched by October 25, 2024, and Lightning.AI said it found no unauthorized access before the fix.
What was the Lightning AI Studio vulnerability?
Noma Security disclosed a vulnerability in Lightning AI Studio, a cloud-based development workspace, on January 23, 2025. Its researchers described a hidden command parameter in a URL used by Studio’s JavaScript flow. A specially crafted link could pass a command to the Studio terminal, where it was decoded from Base64 and executed. Noma said the command could run with root privileges in the Studio environment. Noma Security’s technical disclosure explains the reported mechanics.

The issue is called remote code execution (RCE) because a command supplied remotely through the URL could be run in the workspace. It was not simply a browser display problem: Noma describes Studios as persistent cloud workspaces with their own files, data, and infrastructure. A successful command could therefore affect resources available inside that environment.
How could the exploit work?
- A user visits a crafted link. Noma’s scenario involved directing a user to a shared Studio terminal URL containing the hidden parameter.
- The URL passes a command to the terminal flow. The command was Base64 encoded in the example Noma described, then decoded by the platform’s flow.
- The workspace executes it. Noma said the command could run with root privileges in the Studio environment, giving it the potential to change or delete files and access resources available to that workspace.
Noma’s disclosure demonstrates destructive file deletion and describes a possible route to retrieve AWS instance identity credentials from metadata and send them to an attacker-controlled server. These are disclosed capabilities and scenarios, not evidence that a victim’s files were deleted or credentials stolen.

What could the flaw have affected?
Potential impact depended on what the affected Studio environment could access. Noma’s examples include unauthorized command execution, changes to workspace files, and access to sensitive cloud metadata credentials. If credentials or connected systems were reachable from the workspace, they could increase the potential consequences. The sources do not establish that any of these outcomes occurred.
Gal Moyal, identified by CyberScoop as working in the office of Noma’s chief technology officer, described the potential risk as a vulnerability that “can shut down essentially everything you own,” referring to secrets and connected systems. That is a characterization of possible impact, not a report that systems were actually shut down. CyberScoop’s report also records the company’s response.
Was the vulnerability exploited, and when was it patched?
CyberScoop reported that Noma discovered the flaw on October 14, 2024, contacted Lightning.AI that day, and that a patch was developed and implemented by October 25, 2024. Noma assigned it a CVSS severity score of 9.4. That score rates the vulnerability’s severity; it is not a measure of how many users were affected. CyberScoop also reported that Noma did not request a formal CVE identifier, so no CVE number is established in these reports.
Lightning.AI told CyberScoop it had no evidence of exploitation in the wild. A company spokesperson said: “Our security review confirmed no unauthorized access occurred before the fix.” The spokesperson also said Lightning.AI strengthened input validation, tightened access controls, and reinforced internal security protocols. These are the company’s account of its review and response, not findings from an independent audit.

The disclosure highlights questions worth asking about cloud development workspaces, without establishing which controls were present in any particular customer environment:
- Are URL parameters that can reach command-handling flows strictly validated?
- How is terminal access authorized, especially when a workspace or terminal is shared?
- Which cloud identity credentials can a workspace retrieve, and are those permissions limited to what the workload needs?
- How are connected systems protected against lateral movement if a workspace is compromised?
These are general security questions raised by the reported mechanics, not claims that a particular independent standard or product would have prevented the incident.
