Chimera Linux’s February 14, 2025 image batch refreshed the recommended starting point for new installations with newer apk-tools, Linux kernel 6.13, and standard release images for 32-bit PowerPC (ppc). It also changed package-manager configuration and repository-index naming. This is a historical release, not the current image set: the live-image index now points to later batches.

What changed in the February 14, 2025 release?

Chimera Linux described the 20250214 images as its recommended installation baseline because older images had outdated package management and installation scripts. The announcement grouped several practical changes together:

  • Newer apk-tools with support for configuration features Chimera was beginning to use.
  • Linux kernel 6.13, which the project described as providing updated hardware support without naming particular devices or drivers.
  • Standard release images for 32-bit PowerPC (ppc).

The announcement was published on February 14, 2025. Kernel 6.13 is a version identifier, not a quantified performance claim.

What changed in apk-tools and repository configuration?

The updated apk-tools version supported variable expansion and moving most package-manager files into a system-wide /usr location. Chimera connected those changes to mirror selection: users could change the mirror without manually editing repository definitions.

The release also adopted v3-style repository index naming while retaining backward compatibility. That is a repository-format detail; it does not mean every older installation image or repository setup would remain usable indefinitely.

Changing the APK mirror

Current Chimera documentation, consulted September 27, 2026, directs users to create a file under /etc/apk/repositories.d and set CHIMERA_REPO_URL to the mirror’s base URL. It advises against directly specifying repositories or changing the chimera-repo- packages for this purpose. These are the current documented instructions, not necessarily a verbatim reproduction of every instruction in the 2025 release announcement. See the APK mirror guide.

What did “PowerPC support” mean in this batch?

The 20250214 archive confirms that the release included standard images for 32-bit PowerPC, identified as ppc. Its archive lists base, GNOME, and Plasma live ISOs, along with root filesystem tarballs. The same archive has separate artifacts for ppc64 and ppc64le; these architecture labels are not interchangeable.

Plasma was experimental in the release announcement. GNOME and Plasma images were available, but the project specifically qualified Plasma’s status.

This is a historical statement about the February 2025 batch, not confirmation of current support for big-endian PowerPC. On March 13, 2026, Chimera announced a plan to retire its big-endian 32-bit ppc and 64-bit ppc64 repositories and builders by July 2026 unless circumstances changed. The announcement explicitly excluded little-endian ppc64le and cited the lack of a dedicated maintainer and platform usability issues, including graphics and browser limitations. The official news page does not confirm whether the proposed retirement was completed. The installation requirements page consulted September 27, 2026 lists ppc64le but not ppc or ppc64; that omission alone does not prove repository removal. Check current project documentation before choosing a PowerPC target. See the project news page and installation documentation.

Which image should you download?

Choose by target architecture, environment, image type, and release date. The official 20250214 archive contains the historical files and their names.

  • Architecture: Select the image matching the machine’s architecture, such as ppc, ppc64, or ppc64le. Do not assume one variant boots on another.
  • Live environment: The archive offers base and GNOME images, as well as experimental Plasma images for the listed ppc targets.
  • Image type: Live ISOs are generally intended for generic computers. Chimera’s installation guide also distinguishes device-specific images and root filesystem tarballs; use the format suited to your device and installation method.
  • Release date: 20250214 is an older batch. The live-image index consulted September 27, 2026 lists later batches dated 20250420 and 20251220, with latest pointing to 20251220.

How do you verify the downloaded image?

The 20250214 archive includes sha256sums.txt and a minisign signature. Chimera’s installation documentation explains how to use the checksums and release-batch signing key to verify media. Verification helps detect a corrupted download or a file that does not match the published release artifacts. Follow the project’s current instructions rather than assuming an old verification command or key remains current.

  1. Download the correct image and the verification files from the 20250214 archive.
  2. Follow the installation guide to check the file against the published SHA-256 checksums and verify the signature using the release-batch key.
  3. Only proceed with installation if the checks succeed; if they do not, download the files again and repeat the verification.
