Minisforum’s DeskMini U820 and U850 were palm-sized PCs introduced in 2021, not new 2026 launches. Both shipped with Windows 10 Pro, supported native Ubuntu according to Minisforum’s confirmation to Ars Technica, and combined laptop-class Intel processors with expandable storage, dual Ethernet and up to three simultaneous displays. Their specifications and launch prices are useful when evaluating a used unit, but a listing’s actual RAM, SSD, accessories and condition matter more than the original configuration.
What were the Minisforum U820 and U850?
The U820 and U850 shared a compact desktop chassis and were marketed as small but capable Windows PCs. Ars Technica covered their launch on February 5, 2021, with preorders expected to ship in April of that year. Minisforum later published an official unboxing video on March 24, 2021.
They were sold with Windows 10 Pro and had two internal 2.5-inch SATA positions in addition to an M.2 2280 NVMe slot. Minisforum also confirmed native Ubuntu Linux support to Ars Technica. That confirmation does not establish a current Linux support lifecycle, so users should check device-specific drivers and their chosen distribution before buying.

The Ars Technica specifications table printed “i5-8249U” for the U820, but the article’s narrative identifies the processor as the i5-8259U, matching Minisforum’s official video result. The i5-8259U is therefore the consistent model identification; verify the processor in a second-hand machine with Windows System Information, BIOS or a Linux hardware tool.

The RAM ceilings and included 16 GB/512 GB configuration are launch-era reporting, not a promise about every used unit. A seller may have changed the SO-DIMMs or NVMe drive, and the two 2.5-inch bays may be empty or missing their mounting hardware.
Ports, monitors and networking
Launch coverage listed HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, four USB-A 3.1 ports, one gigabit Ethernet port, one 2.5-gigabit Ethernet port, a 3.5 mm audio jack and a digital microphone. The systems were described as capable of driving three displays simultaneously.
A Linx International correction notice dated August 20, 2021 superseded the launch article’s incorrect HDMI mode. For both models, the corrected output limits are:

Do not assume HDMI can deliver 4K at 60 Hz. For a 4K/60 setup, plan around DisplayPort or USB-C, and confirm the required adapters, cables and monitor inputs. “Three displays” describes the launch capability; the exact arrangement still depends on the monitor resolutions, adapters and operating-system support.

Windows 10 and Linux support
Windows
Both machines shipped with Windows 10 Pro. Minisforum’s U850 support page lists a Windows 10 user guide, a Windows 10 Pro 20H2 image and drivers, with downloads dated March and July 2021. The U820 support search result lists Windows 10 guides, images and drivers, plus later Windows 11-related downloads.
Those files document legacy support resources rather than an ongoing security-update commitment. Windows 10 support status, activation, and the installed image should be checked before purchase, especially on a refurbished or wiped unit.
Ubuntu and other Linux distributions
Minisforum told Ars Technica that the U820 and U850 had native Ubuntu support. That makes Ubuntu a plausible operating-system choice, but “native support” does not guarantee that every distribution, kernel, suspend state, fingerprint of hardware or peripheral will work identically. Test Wi-Fi, audio, display outputs, Ethernet and sleep/wake on the exact unit when possible.
Performance: what the model numbers do and do not tell you
The U820 uses the older Core i5-8259U, while the U850 uses the newer Core i5-10210U. Ars Technica reported processor TDP comparisons and benchmark results in which the U820 could beat the U850 in some tests. Those were article-reported launch benchmarks, not a current controlled comparison, so they should not be treated as a universal ranking.

For a used purchase, evaluate the workload rather than assuming the U850 is always faster:
- Office work, web applications and light development generally depend on sustained CPU behavior, memory and storage condition.
- Video-output needs may make the port configuration more important than a small CPU difference.
- Virtual machines, compiling and other sustained workloads can expose cooling, power-adapter and thermal-throttling issues.
- Neither model should be selected as a modern gaming or heavy workstation system without checking the specific graphics requirements.
Storage and memory upgrades
The launch configuration used two 8 GB DDR4 SO-DIMMs and a 512 GB M.2 2280 NVMe drive. The reported maximums were 32 GB for the U820 and 64 GB for the U850. Both chassis were described as having room for two 2.5-inch SATA SSDs or hard drives.
Before ordering parts for a used machine, ask the seller for interior photos or exact measurements. Confirm that SATA cables, brackets and screws are present, and check whether the installed NVMe drive occupies the M.2 slot. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is the natural upgrade category for either bay, but capacity and compatibility should be verified against the unit’s hardware.

The original $639 U820 and $699 U850 prices were historical 2021 launch listings, not current market values. A Japanese distributor’s U850 page, published August 6, 2021, is now marked discontinued; that establishes the status of that listing in Japan, not worldwide availability.

Use this checklist when evaluating a listing:
- Confirm the exact model and CPU in BIOS or the operating system.
- Record installed RAM, NVMe capacity and whether either 2.5-inch bay is populated.
- Check that the Windows license or recovery media is included if Windows is important to you.
- Test HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C video, both Ethernet ports, USB-A ports, audio and microphone.
- Inspect fan noise, temperatures, dust, dents and signs of liquid damage.
- Verify the correct power adapter, storage brackets and SATA cables are included.
- Prefer a seller with a meaningful return window and a clear description of refurbished work.
Who should consider the U820 or U850?
These models can make sense when a buyer wants a very small desktop, multiple display outputs, fast wired networking and the ability to add 2.5-inch storage. They are most defensible at a used price that reflects their 2021 platform and the condition of the particular unit.
Choose between them based on the installed hardware, memory headroom, display and networking requirements, and verified condition—not simply the U850 name or its newer CPU generation. If current warranty coverage, modern operating-system support or contemporary integrated graphics is essential, a newer mini PC is the safer category to investigate.
