Bloomberg later reported that Amazon and Microsoft signed an agreement, but deployment was delayed for a year while security concerns were addressed. Public evidence checked through September 2026 does not establish that the rollout is complete.
“New Outlook” in the headline is not a reference to Microsoft’s Outlook email app. It comes from an unnamed solution-provider executive describing how generative AI was giving Amazon and AWS “a new outlook on everything.”
What Amazon reportedly agreed to buy
CRN’s October 18, 2023 report, citing Insider coverage, described a Microsoft 365 commitment worth more than $1 billion over five years for more than 1 million users. Reuters’ contemporaneous account, republished by Investing.com on October 17, said the reporting was based on an internal Microsoft document and a person familiar with the matter.
The reported user population included corporate and frontline workers. The exact final contract value and seat count were not publicly established in those accounts, so the figures should be treated as reported terms rather than an independently published contract.

What the purchase does not mean
The reports concern workplace productivity software—such as Microsoft 365 applications and services—not Amazon’s cloud-infrastructure strategy. Nothing in the cited coverage says Amazon transferred AWS workloads to Microsoft Azure.
What “New Outlook” means in this headline
The phrase is a play on words from an unnamed solution-provider executive who partners with both AWS and Microsoft. CRN quoted the executive saying:
“I just think the generative AI phenomenon that’s happening this year is giving [Amazon and AWS] a new outlook on everything.”

Here, “outlook” means a changing perspective on cloud and artificial intelligence. It does not identify Microsoft’s Outlook application, a new Outlook product deployment, or a change to Amazon’s email system.

The executive presented generative AI and anticipated AI capabilities in Microsoft 365 as part of the broader competitive context. That was the source’s interpretation, not a confirmed statement of Amazon’s purchasing motive. CRN reported that Amazon and Microsoft did not comment before publication.
Why a Microsoft 365 deal is strategically notable
Amazon and Microsoft compete intensely in cloud infrastructure, yet a company can use Microsoft’s productivity suite while operating its infrastructure on AWS. Enterprise software licensing and cloud hosting are related purchasing decisions, but they are not the same platform commitment.

The deal therefore illustrates how large organizations may buy productivity tools from a major cloud competitor without moving their core infrastructure. It should not be presented as evidence that AWS lost Amazon’s internal workloads to Azure.
What happened after the 2023 report
Bloomberg’s 2024 update
On December 12, 2024, Bloomberg reported that Amazon and Microsoft had signed a deal. Bloomberg also reported that Amazon delayed deployment for a year while the companies worked through Amazon’s security concerns.

The material publicly checked through September 27, 2026 does not verify that deployment was completed. The reported signature, the security-related delay, and final operational rollout are separate facts; the first two do not prove the third.

How the reported cloud-market context fits
CRN cited Synergy Research Group’s second-quarter 2023 global cloud-market figures when discussing the competitive backdrop:
| Provider | Share | Period and source |
|---|---|---|
| AWS | 32% | Second quarter of 2023; Synergy Research Group, as reported by CRN |
| Microsoft | 22% | Second quarter of 2023; Synergy Research Group, as reported by CRN |
These are historical, quarter-specific market shares. They are not current figures and do not measure Microsoft 365 licensing or Amazon’s internal software usage.
What remains established—and what does not
Established by the cited reporting
- CRN and Reuters reported terms exceeding $1 billion over five years.
- The initial reports described more than 1 million intended Microsoft 365 users, including corporate and frontline workers.
- Bloomberg reported a signed agreement and a one-year deployment delay linked to security work.
- The “new outlook” wording came from an unnamed solution-provider executive discussing generative AI and Amazon’s broader cloud perspective.
Not established by those sources
- The final contract value or final number of seats.
- Completion of the Microsoft 365 rollout by September 2026.
- Any migration of AWS infrastructure or workloads to Azure.
- A confirmed statement from Amazon or Microsoft explaining the deal’s strategic motive.
Practical lessons for organizations considering a similar move
Amazon’s reported security delay highlights the work behind a large productivity-suite deployment. Organizations evaluating a comparable agreement should examine:
- License scope: Which corporate, frontline, contractor, and temporary users require which services?
- Identity and access: How will sign-in, privileged access, device compliance, and identity lifecycle be controlled?
- Security and governance: What data-protection, retention, monitoring, residency, and incident-response requirements must be met before launch?
- Migration operations: How will mail, files, devices, integrations, training, support, and staged cutovers be managed?
- Vendor dependence: Which capabilities become difficult or costly to replace if requirements or pricing change?
Those are general planning considerations, not disclosed terms of Amazon’s agreement.
The bottom line on the headline
Amazon’s reported commitment was a large, five-year Microsoft 365 licensing deal—not a billion-dollar move of AWS infrastructure to Azure. Bloomberg later reported that the agreement was signed but deployment was delayed over security concerns. The headline’s “New Outlook” refers to a partner’s description of Amazon and AWS reassessing cloud and AI, not to Microsoft Outlook software, and the rollout’s completion remains unverified.
