The Atom N2600 and N2800 were mobile Cedarview processors for netbooks and other low-power systems. The Atom D2700 belonged to Intel’s desktop segment, even though it appeared during the same 2011–2012 netbook era. All three use two cores, four threads, 1 MB of L2 cache, 32 nm manufacturing, and the FCBGA559 package, but they differ in clock speed, thermal design power, memory limits, and intended system class.

At a glance: N2600 versus N2800 versus D2700

Processor Intel segment Launch quarter Cores / threads Base frequency L2 cache TDP Maximum memory Intel lists
Atom N2600 Mobile Q4 2011 2 / 4 1.60 GHz 1 MB 3.5 W 2.44 GB
Atom N2800 Mobile Q4 2011 2 / 4 1.86 GHz 1 MB 6.5 W 4.88 GB
Atom D2700 Desktop Q3 2011 2 / 4 2.13 GHz 1 MB 10 W 4 GB

These are Intel’s specification-page values. Launch quarter identifies the processor’s introduction, not the retail release date of a particular 2012 computer.

What the Cedarview generation changed

Intel introduced the N2600 and N2800 in December 2011 as part of the Cedar Trail platform. The mobile processors were paired with the Intel NM10 Express Chipset and integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3600 or 3650 graphics. Intel’s announcement described “up to 2X” graphics improvement over the previous-generation platform. That wording is Intel’s period vendor claim, not an independently validated benchmark result.

The D2700 shared the Cedarview family but was classified as a desktop part. Intel cited point-of-sale systems such as NCR equipment as one intended use, so its presence in a netbook-era discussion does not make it a mobile processor or prove that a particular netbook used it.

How much faster is the N2800 than the N2600?

The N2800’s 1.86 GHz base frequency is higher than the N2600’s 1.60 GHz, while both have two cores, four threads, and 1 MB of L2 cache. That gives the N2800 a higher stated clock ceiling, but clock speed alone does not establish an application’s real-world performance. Memory configuration, storage, cooling, software, and the rest of the system also matter, and no independent benchmark result is established here.

The trade-off is thermal design: Intel lists 6.5 W for the N2800 versus 3.5 W for the N2600. TDP is a design value for selecting a processor thermal solution; Intel’s datasheet explicitly says it is not the maximum theoretical power the chip can generate and should not be read as a direct power-meter reading or a guaranteed battery-life figure.

Why the D2700 is not simply a faster netbook N-series chip

At 2.13 GHz, the D2700 has the highest base frequency of the three, but it is a desktop-segment processor with a 10 W TDP. The N2600 and N2800 were designed for mobile systems. A D2700-based machine therefore reflects a different platform and thermal target, not merely an N2800 with a higher multiplier.

Graphics specifications and what they do—and do not—tell you

Intel lists graphics base frequencies of 400 MHz for the N2600, 640 MHz for the N2800, and 640 MHz for the D2700. These are specification values, not comparative test scores. The Cedar Trail announcement’s “up to 2X” statement describes Intel’s claimed improvement against its previous-generation platform under conditions Intel did not present as a universal result for every application or system.

Actual display support, video acceleration, drivers, and operating-system behavior depend on the complete computer, chipset firmware, and software. A processor specification by itself cannot establish that a particular old netbook will run a modern application or operating system.

Can you upgrade an N2600 netbook?

Do not assume that an N2600 can be replaced with an N2800 or D2700. Intel lists these processors in an FCBGA559 package, which is a board-mounted package rather than a user-accessible desktop socket. The model number and nominal package do not prove that a replacement is electrically, thermally, firmware-wise, or physically compatible with a particular netbook.

  1. Find the exact computer model and board revision.
  2. Read the manufacturer’s service manual and board specifications for supported processors, chipset, firmware, and memory.
  3. Check whether the processor is soldered and whether the cooling assembly is rated for the proposed part’s thermal design.
  4. Confirm that the system firmware contains support for the exact replacement SKU.
  5. Only then obtain a board-level repair or replacement estimate; do not treat a bare processor listing as an upgrade plan.

For many netbooks, replacing the entire motherboard is the practical meaning of a processor “upgrade,” and the evidence here does not establish a successful upgrade for any specific model.

What “how fast is an Atom N2600 today?” can answer

The documented facts are its 1.60 GHz base frequency, two cores, four threads, 1 MB L2 cache, and 3.5 W TDP. Those figures identify the chip’s design, not a current performance rating. No system-specific benchmark, battery-runtime measurement, present-day operating-system compatibility result, or software list is established for an N2600 netbook, so modern workload suitability must be evaluated on the exact machine rather than inferred from the clock speed.

Current status and buying or repair decisions

Intel currently marks the N2600, N2800, and D2700 as discontinued. Their original specifications remain useful for identifying an existing system, comparing board designs, or troubleshooting a period machine, but they do not document current spare-part availability or a supported modern replacement. Verify the complete system model, firmware, memory, storage, and operating system before spending money on repairs.
