On a Chromebook, open the PDF in Files or Gallery, choose Search with Google Lens, select the part of the page you want to investigate, then choose Search with Google Lens again. This Gallery workflow searches a selected visual region for related web content. It is different from extracting PDF text for screen-reader access.
How do I search a PDF with Google Lens?
Google documents the PDF-specific Lens feature in the Chromebook Gallery app. Use these steps:
- On your Chromebook, open Files, or open Gallery and select Open file.
- Choose the PDF. It must be a PDF that Gallery supports.
- Select Search with Google Lens at the top of the window.
- Drag across or otherwise select the region of the PDF you want Lens to examine.
- Select Search with Google Lens again to submit that selection.
These labels and steps come from Google’s Chromebook instructions: Use Google Lens on Gallery in Chromebook.
What can Lens do with a PDF selection?
Gallery’s Lens integration can work with images from PDFs, images and other supported files. Google lists uses including translating a PDF, copying text to fill forms, searching with images from downloaded files and getting homework help (Google’s Gallery Lens documentation).

Lens is a visual-search tool rather than a guaranteed document-lookup system. Google says it compares objects in an image with other images and ranks results by similarity and relevance. Words, language and metadata on the host page can also affect ranking. Expect visually similar images and related web content, not a promise of exact identification (How Google Lens works).
Select the smallest useful area
For a diagram, photograph or product in a PDF, select that object rather than the entire page. For a page containing several unrelated elements, a tighter selection gives Lens a clearer visual subject to compare.

For text on a scanned page
Select the portion containing the heading, label or passage you want to investigate. Lens may use visible words as part of its relevance signals, but the result remains a visual search, not a full-document keyword index.
Can Google Lens search a PDF on a phone or desktop?
Google provides general image-search instructions for Android, iOS and desktop browsers, including selecting or uploading an image. Those pages do not document the Chromebook Gallery PDF sequence above, so do not assume that opening a PDF on every phone or computer will show the same Search with Google Lens controls.

Lens search versus PDF text extraction
Use Lens when you want to identify or investigate something visible in a selected part of the PDF. If your aim is accessibility—for example, making an inaccessible PDF readable to a screen reader—ChromeOS has a separate feature in Chrome PDF Viewer. Google describes opening the PDF in Chrome PDF Viewer and using the context menu’s text-extraction controls; it says this feature is turned on by default for screen-reader users on ChromeOS (Check, edit and sign PDFs).

That OCR-oriented control is not the same as selecting a region in Gallery and sending it to Lens, and Google’s cited instructions do not describe it as general-purpose full-document keyword search.
Troubleshooting the Chromebook workflow
- No Lens button: Confirm that you opened the file in Gallery or through Files using Gallery’s supported PDF view. The cited instructions do not promise identical controls in every PDF app.
- Results are unrelated: Return to the PDF and select a tighter, more distinctive region. Lens ranks matches by similarity and relevance, so broad or visually ambiguous selections can produce broad results.
- You need the words, not web matches: Use Chrome PDF Viewer’s separate text-extraction controls for the screen-reader accessibility use case instead of Lens.
- You are on a phone or desktop: Follow Google’s platform-specific image-search help rather than expecting the Chromebook Gallery menu path.
The Bottom Line
For the documented PDF workflow, use Google Lens in Chromebook Gallery: open the PDF, select a region and run Lens. Choose ChromeOS PDF text extraction instead when the goal is screen-reader access to inaccessible text.
