A PC rebooting during PassMark MemTest86 does not automatically prove that the RAM is defective. The failure can involve UEFI firmware, the USB installation, XMP/EXPO settings, the CPU and its memory controller, motherboard slots, cooling, or power delivery. Red errors that recur at conservative default settings make RAM the leading suspect; a crash before testing starts often points first to firmware, boot media, or multi-CPU compatibility.

Identify what the PC is actually doing

Symptom What it suggests
Automatic restart The system resets and returns to the logo or MemTest86. Firmware, unstable settings, hardware, or power are all possible.
Frozen screen A hard lockup can result from UEFI multi-CPU issues, severe instability, or a hardware fault.
Black screen The machine may still be running, or may have crashed; check fans, keyboard response, and display output.
Complete power loss Investigate the PSU, motherboard power delivery, overheating, or protection shutdowns before blaming memory.
Red errors followed by a restart The configuration is unstable. RAM is a leading suspect, but the slot, motherboard, CPU memory controller, timings, voltage, and firmware can contribute.
Failure before the first test Prioritize USB creation, UEFI boot mode, BIOS settings, firmware, and single-CPU mode.

Record the exact behavior, whether it repeats at the same percentage, whether red errors appear, and whether Windows also crashes. Note the motherboard model and BIOS version, CPU, RAM part number and module count, and whether XMP, EXPO, DOCP, overclocking, undervolting, or manual timings are enabled.

Use the correct MemTest86 media

PassMark MemTest86 and the open-source Memtest86+ are separate projects. This article refers to PassMark MemTest86.

  1. Download the current package from the official download page. The page currently lists MemTest86 v11.7 Build 1000.
  2. Run the included USB image creator; do not copy files manually.
  3. Use a different flash drive if possible, larger than 1 GB, and connect it directly to a rear motherboard USB port. Avoid hubs and front-panel extensions while diagnosing.
  4. Boot from the motherboard’s one-time boot menu and choose the USB entry marked UEFI when duplicates appear.

Current v11.7 images require UEFI and include x86, x86-64, and ARM64 binaries. BIOS-only computers need the older official v4 release. Current MemTest86 does not boot on Apple M-series Macs. A direct, freshly created drive removes a major variable; avoid Ventoy or multiboot media until the problem is understood.

DDR4 Memory Tester, 4 in 1 DDR3 / DDR4 / DDR5UDMM / DDR5RDIMM Memory Tester, for Fixing Desktop and Server Computers
  • WITH INDICATOR: memory tester offer a power mode that can be powered by a battery or by plugging a standard TYPE C cable into a charging head or bank. The second is to provide batteries for power supply; Can and discharge at the same time. When charging, the indicator show red, and when fully charged, the indicator turn green
  • APPLICABLE SCENARIO: This memory diagnostic analyzer is used to test various faults caused by hardware open circuits and short circuits in memory, addressing issues such as poor graphics memory performance
  • FAST CHARGING: The memory tester use LED lights to test all data cables in the memory. When hardware faults occur in these data cable circuits, the brightness of the LED indicator light will change, whether they are particularly bright or not. Insert the memory module that need to be tested into the slot of the memory tester. If all indicator lights are on and the brightness is consistent, indicate that there is no open circuit or short circuit fault in the data line circuit of the
  • USING TIPS: If the indicator light flashes during testing, indicate poor with the gold finger. If the indicator light does not light up, indicate an open circuit fault in the hardware. Check the wear of the gold finger, whether the is damaged, and whether the PCB circuit is open, identify the faulty pin based on the numerical indication of the indicator light, and then use a multimeter to identify the specific cause of the fault. After passing the hardware test of
  • APPLICABLE MODEL: memory diagnostic tester card is suitable for desktop DDR3, DDR4, DDR5UDMM, DDR5RDIMM 4 types, use the patch assembly, do hands. Fixing desktop and server computers is a good option

Reset firmware settings before replacing parts

  1. Enter UEFI/BIOS setup.
  2. Load Optimized Defaults, Setup Defaults, or the equivalent.
  3. Disable XMP, EXPO, DOCP, manual memory overclocks, CPU overclocks, undervolts, and aggressive memory presets.
  4. Save, reboot, and run one complete pass at conservative settings.

A rated memory speed is often an overclocked profile rather than the platform’s guaranteed default. If MemTest86 passes at defaults but fails with XMP or EXPO, the kit may be functional but unstable with that CPU, motherboard, BIOS, voltage, timings, or module population. Try a BIOS update, lower speed, or more conservative timings before deciding the modules are physically bad.

Try single-CPU mode early

PassMark documents UEFI multiprocessor-service bugs that can freeze or crash multi-threaded testing. Its support guidance recommends retrying in single-CPU mode before concluding that RAM is defective (support home; freezing and lockups).

  1. Open MemTest86’s configuration or test-selection controls.
  2. Disable multi-CPU or multi-thread testing, or select single CPU where shown.
  3. Run the test again.
  • If single-CPU mode works but parallel mode reboots, a UEFI/BIOS and processor-thread interaction is more likely.
  • If both modes show repeatable memory errors, hardware or memory configuration remains the primary concern.
  • If both modes reboot without errors, continue with media, firmware, cooling, power, and one-DIMM testing.

PassMark has published model-specific multiprocessor workarounds, including a blacklist configuration, but these are advanced fixes for the affected board rather than universal solutions (example support forum case).

Update or roll back motherboard firmware

UEFI supplies services MemTest86 relies on, and implementations differ between boards (PassMark support). A BIOS update may improve DDR4/DDR5 training, memory compatibility, multiprocessor services, or support for newer CPUs and densities.

  • Use firmware for the exact motherboard model and revision.
  • Keep power stable and follow the manufacturer’s recovery procedure.
  • If instability began immediately after an update, test defaults and consider a permitted rollback.
  • Clear CMOS only as described in the board manual.

Test each memory module and slot

  1. Power off, disconnect AC power, and reseat the DIMMs.
  2. Use the motherboard manual’s preferred single-DIMM slot, commonly the second slot in a channel.
  3. Test module A alone, then module B alone in that same slot.
  4. Test a suspected module in another recommended slot.
  5. Reinstall the matched pair and test again.
Result More likely explanation
One module fails in multiple slots while the other passes Defective module
Both modules fail in one slot but pass elsewhere Motherboard slot or memory-channel problem
Each passes alone but the pair fails Dual-channel compatibility, timings, memory-controller margin, BIOS, or population stress
Errors follow the module The module is the leading suspect
Errors stay with the slot Board or channel is the leading suspect
All configurations reboot without errors Firmware, CPU, motherboard, PSU, thermals, or severe instability

PassMark notes that identifying a failing DIMM is not always straightforward because results depend on the CPU, motherboard, slots, and configuration (troubleshooting guide). Reproduce the failure and document the exact module and slot arrangement.

Check cooling, installation, and power

  • Confirm the CPU fan or pump operates and temperatures do not become excessive.
  • Inspect cooler mounting, dust, DIMM seating, damaged slots, and CPU-socket contacts.
  • Reseat the 24-pin ATX, CPU EPS, and modular PSU connectors.
  • Disconnect nonessential USB devices and expansion cards for a minimum-hardware test.
  • If the machine powers off or resets abruptly, test with a known-good, appropriately rated PSU if available.

MemTest86 is not a PSU diagnostic. A reboot proves failure under this workload, not which component caused it. Do not treat a cheap idle-voltage PSU tester as conclusive.

Interpret the result

Errors recur at default settings

Treat any reproducible error as instability. If the error follows one DIMM across slots, replacement or warranty return is justified. If another known-good kit passes in the same system, the evidence is stronger.

Defaults pass but XMP or EXPO fails

The profile is unstable on this platform. A BIOS update, lower memory speed, relaxed timings, or different module population may solve it; the result alone does not prove a physical defect.

The tester reboots without recording errors

Prioritize single-CPU mode, a recreated UEFI USB, default settings, firmware, temperatures, connectors, and PSU checks. A crash is not the same as a recorded memory error.

MemTest86 passes but Windows still crashes

A pass means only that this configuration completed that run. Investigate drivers, storage, GPU, CPU stability, and Windows event logs as separate possibilities.

Cross-check with another diagnostic

Memtest86+ is an independent bootable tester, not automatically a more accurate one. Windows Memory Diagnostic is convenient but less configurable. Platform or vendor diagnostics can help with warranty evidence, while Windows stress tools add operating-system and driver variables.

  • If MemTest86 and Memtest86+ both report errors at defaults, hardware instability is much more likely.
  • If only MemTest86 crashes, investigate its version, UEFI behavior, test mode, and USB media before replacing RAM.
  • A clean result from one tool does not guarantee universal stability.

When to replace hardware or contact support

Consider an RMA when a module repeatedly fails at default settings, fails in multiple slots, and the failure follows that module. Escalate to the motherboard or CPU manufacturer when failures stay with a slot or channel, or when a known-good kit behaves the same way. Investigate the PSU first when the symptom is complete power loss or broader load-related instability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can bad RAM reboot a PC without showing errors?

Yes. A reboot without a recorded error indicates instability under the workload but cannot identify RAM as the cause. Test defaults, single-CPU mode, modules, slots, cooling, firmware, and power.

Why does MemTest86 reboot only in multi-core mode?

A UEFI multiprocessor-service or firmware compatibility problem is possible. Retry in single-CPU mode and check for a board BIOS update.

DDR4 Memory Tester, Desktop Computer Memory Test Card With LED Indicators
  • 1.Applicable Scene: Desktop computer DDR4 memory test card is suitable for desktop computer DDR4 memory.
  • 2.Computer Memory Failures: The failures of computer memory are mainly due to poor contact of the gold pins, wear and tear of the gold pins, broken PCBs, damage to the data line exclusion, open and short circuits in the video memory, and poor memory performance, etc.
  • 3.LED Indicators: LED indicators are used to test all data lines of the memory, and the normal brightness is regarded as normal. When a hardware fault occurs in the loop of these data lines, bright or no light is abnormal.
  • 4.Uses: If the test indicator flashes, it means that the gold pin is in poor contact. If there is no indicator light, it means that the hardware has an open circuit failure. Check the wear of the gold pin, whether the exclusion is damaged, and whether the PCB is disconnected.
  • 5.If you have any question, please contact us. We will offer an excellent after-sell service。

Should I disable XMP or EXPO?

Yes, while diagnosing. A pass at defaults and failure with the profile indicates platform or tuning instability, not automatic proof of defective modules.

How many passes are enough?

No fixed pass count guarantees stability. One complete pass without errors is useful evidence, but intermittent faults require longer testing and controlled repetition.

What if each RAM stick passes alone but both fail together?

Investigate dual-channel compatibility, BIOS training, timings, voltage, memory-controller limits, and module population before replacing either stick.

Can a motherboard or CPU cause MemTest86 errors?

Yes. MemTest86 exercises the CPU, caches, memory controller, motherboard, and RAM, so errors do not identify one component by themselves.

Is Memtest86+ better than MemTest86?

They are separate projects. Memtest86+ is useful as an independent cross-check, but a different result should prompt investigation rather than an automatic accuracy verdict.

Do I need MemTest86 Pro?

Usually not for one home PC. The Free edition covers ordinary bootable testing; Pro is aimed at professional reporting, automation, support, or larger deployments.

Can I run the current version on an old BIOS-only computer?

No. Current v11.7 images require UEFI; use the official older v4 release for BIOS-only systems.
