Yes, there are better tools than GIMP for particular jobs—but there is no universal replacement. Affinity is the closest broad desktop alternative for many Photoshop-style photo and design workflows; Krita is better for digital painting; Pixelmator Pro suits Mac users; Photoshop remains the safest choice for Adobe compatibility; and darktable or RawTherapee should handle serious RAW development. GIMP itself remains a capable, free, open-source raster editor, especially on Linux.
Is GIMP actually bad?
Not generally. GIMP handles compositing, selections, masks, retouching, resizing, web graphics and image cleanup well. The frustration usually comes from a mismatch between GIMP’s workflow and what the user expects from Photoshop, Lightroom or newer applications.
- Interface: Tool options, layers, paths and transforms can feel less discoverable, and shortcuts and terminology differ from Photoshop.
- Reversible editing: Users expecting adjustment layers, smart objects and live filters may find some operations more cumbersome. GIMP 3.x has modernized important areas, but feature parity varies by operation.
- RAW photography: GIMP normally relies on an external RAW processor rather than providing a Lightroom-style catalog and development environment. Its FAQ explains this workflow at gimp.org/docs/userfaq.html.
- PSD interchange: GIMP can open and export PSD files, but complex documents may lose smart objects, adjustment layers, effects, text behavior, masks or plug-in-dependent features.
- Specialist work: GIMP is a raster editor, not a dedicated vector-design, page-layout, RAW-catalog or painting application.
GIMP’s official site listed version 3.2.4, released April 19, 2026, when checked on August 18, 2026. It remains free, open source and cross-platform for GNU/Linux, macOS and Windows: gimp.org.

Coverage retrieved for this article reported the current Affinity offering as free to download and use in 2026. Treat that as time-sensitive: check the official terms at download and checkout. Affinity is associated with Canva, but it is not identical to Photoshop. Test Adobe-specific AI features, plug-ins, complex PSD files, collaboration and Linux availability before moving a production workflow.
Choose Affinity when
- You want a modern desktop interface and mostly work on Windows or macOS.
- You need photo editing alongside vector or layout work.
- You prefer to avoid a recurring subscription.
Stay with GIMP when
- Linux, open-source licensing, scripting or community plug-ins are essential.
- Your work is mainly raster editing and existing XCF projects already meet your needs.
Krita vs GIMP: choose the tool that matches the canvas
Krita is free, open source and available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its feature set—documented at krita.org/en/features—prioritizes brushes, stabilizers, layers, masks, illustration, comics, texture painting and animation.
That makes Krita a better GIMP alternative for artists whose main task is painting. It is not automatically better for photographers: it is not a Lightroom-style catalog and RAW-development environment, and its brush-centered interface may be slower for routine corrections, metadata and batch export.

Pixelmator Pro vs GIMP: the Mac-only option
Pixelmator Pro is designed exclusively for Mac. The official product information lists RAW support, non-destructive color adjustments, layers, vector tools, Photoshop-file support, background removal, repair tools and machine-learning features. The official page showed $49.99 on the Mac App Store when checked on August 18, 2026; prices can change.

Photoshop vs GIMP: when the subscription is justified
Photoshop is the practical choice when clients, agencies or teammates require dependable Adobe behavior. Its advantages include PSD compatibility, Adobe Camera Raw, plug-ins, advanced AI tools, extensive tutorials and collaboration features.

Adobe’s US pricing page listed Photoshop at $22.99 per month on an annual, billed-monthly plan and the Photography plan at $19.99 per month, with a seven-day trial, when checked for this article. Prices, promotions and plan names vary by region and date; confirm them at Adobe’s plans page.
For occasional crops, resizing and simple retouching, that recurring cost may be unnecessary. For business-critical Adobe interchange, it can be cheaper than repeatedly repairing incompatible files.

Photopea: useful, but not a desktop replacement
Photopea is worth trying on a Chromebook, shared computer or browser-first workflow. It opens common formats, including PSD, without installation and uses a Photoshop-like layout.

Performance depends on the browser and hardware. Large projects can be less comfortable, offline use is more limited than with a native application, and privacy or upload behavior matters for sensitive client images. Review Photopea’s current privacy and account terms before using confidential material.

If GIMP feels bad because RAW editing is awkward, replacing it with another pixel editor may not solve the real problem. darktable and RawTherapee are free, open-source tools built for exposure, white balance, lens corrections, color, batch processing and export.
A practical setup is darktable or RawTherapee for RAW development, followed by GIMP, Affinity, Krita or Photoshop for compositing and pixel-level work. Neither RAW application is a direct replacement for GIMP’s compositing tools, and an editor is not automatically a photo library: evaluate metadata, ratings, keywords, search, backups and batch export separately.

Do not confuse a specialist tool with a replacement
Inkscape for vectors
Inkscape is the better choice for logos, icons, diagrams and scalable illustrations. It complements GIMP rather than replacing photo editing.
Scribus for publishing
Scribus is designed for page layout and desktop publishing. A magazine, brochure or book workflow may reasonably use Scribus alongside an image editor.
How to switch without losing work
Do not migrate by abandoning your existing files. Run a controlled trial with representative projects:
- Keep untouched originals, including XCF, PSD, RAW, TIFF and linked assets.
- Test one layered XCF, one complex PSD, one RAW image, one portrait retouch, one text-heavy design, one masked composition, one web export and one print or CMYK project if relevant.
- Check layer preservation, text editability, masks, color, export quality, speed, undo history, fonts, plug-ins and whether the project can be reopened later.
- Export flattened comparison copies, but never overwrite the source projects.
- Adopt the new application gradually, keeping GIMP available until client files and personal archives work reliably.
Also check operating-system support, GPU and large-file performance, color management, soft proofing, batch export, scripting, versioning, account requirements, cloud dependence and vendor lock-in. “Supports PSD” does not guarantee that every smart object, adjustment layer, text effect or plug-in survives intact.

Which alternative should you choose?
- Choose Affinity for the closest broad desktop replacement and a modern photo/design workflow, after checking current licensing and testing real files.
- Choose Krita when painting, illustration, comics or texture work is the primary task.
- Choose Pixelmator Pro when you are a Mac user who values native Apple integration and a one-time app purchase.
- Choose Photoshop when Adobe compatibility, Camera Raw, plug-ins, AI or professional collaboration is business-critical.
- Choose darktable or RawTherapee plus an editor when RAW photography is the core problem.
- Keep GIMP when zero cost, Linux, open-source licensing, offline use, scripts or existing plug-ins matter more than interface familiarity.
