Many Reolink cameras can record to Synology Surveillance Station, but compatibility ranges from a full model-specific integration to a basic RTSP video stream. For dependable continuous recording, start with a continuously powered PoE camera, check the exact model in Synology’s camera list, and choose the Reolink protocol when you need features such as AI events, PTZ, or doorbell alerts. ONVIF and RTSP are useful alternatives, but they do not guarantee the same controls or event data.
What “compatible with Synology” means
Surveillance Station can connect to Reolink cameras in three main ways: a Reolink camera profile, ONVIF, or a manually configured RTSP stream. These are not equivalent. A live video feed may work even when AI events, PTZ, audio, or doorbell functions do not.
| Integration path | What it generally provides | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Synology-listed model or Reolink profile | The strongest potential for model-specific video, controls, and events. The exact integrated functions vary by model and Surveillance Station support. | Buyers who want features such as camera AI, PTZ, or doorbell events. |
| ONVIF | Usually a practical route to video and, depending on the camera and profile, audio or selected controls. It does not guarantee Reolink-specific events. | Models without a suitable Synology profile, when standard network-camera support is available. |
| RTSP / User Defined | A stream for live view and recording, with fewer camera-specific features. AI metadata, PTZ, intercom, and multi-lens controls may be unavailable. | Basic video recording when the other paths do not work. |
Synology’s IP Camera Support List is useful for checking exact models, codecs, resolution, and listed functions. Synology notes that its entries describe functions integrated into Surveillance Station; some information is based on manufacturer APIs and is not necessarily the result of Synology physically testing every camera.
Reolink also cautions that protocol support varies by product. Check its model-by-model RTSP, ONVIF, and CGI support information rather than assuming a feature works across an entire product family. Reolink’s Synology setup guide recommends the Reolink protocol for supported AI cameras, PTZ models, and doorbells when those functions are wanted.

Choose the camera for the scene, not just the resolution
PoE is the most straightforward starting point when Ethernet can be run: one cable supplies network connectivity and power, and a wired link avoids reliance on Wi-Fi for a continuous stream. Reolink’s US PoE catalog includes fixed, panoramic, PTZ, and doorbell cameras. Check the exact model’s protocol support and the Synology list before buying.
Continuously powered Wi-Fi models can be viable if the wireless link is stable, but congestion or weak signal can interrupt recording. Battery and solar cameras are a poor fit for direct, continuous Surveillance Station recording: they sleep between events and generally do not provide the always-available stream a NAS recorder expects. Reolink likewise says battery-powered cameras are not supported for continuous Surveillance Station monitoring in its overview of Synology compatibility.
Fixed PoE coverage: RLC-810A
The RLC-810A is an 8MP (3840×2160) fixed PoE camera with H.265, a built-in microphone, person, vehicle, and animal detection, RTSP and ONVIF, IP67 weather resistance, and microSD support, according to Reolink’s product specifications. It is a sensible category match for a fixed outdoor view where continuous wired recording and detail matter. A fixed lens is less adaptable than optical zoom, and the camera’s detection capability does not by itself establish that its AI events will appear in Surveillance Station.
Low-light color priority: CX410
The CX410 trades resolution for a low-light emphasis: Reolink lists 4MP (2560×1440), 25 fps main stream, an f/1.0 lens, a 1/1.8-inch sensor, ColorX night vision, person, vehicle, and animal detection, two-way audio, RTSP and ONVIF, and IP67 protection on its product page. Color night video still depends on available ambient light; it is not a guarantee of color identification in a completely dark scene. Synology lists the CX410 with H.264 support and a Device Pack requirement of Surveillance Station 6.1.4 or later in its compatibility list.

Invite up to 10 users and let 4 people view live at the same time. Turn on Privacy Mode to block the camera view and mute audio when needed, with control reserved for the main admin.
Adjustable framing: RLC-811A
The RLC-811A is an 8MP 4K camera with 5× optical zoom, as identified in Reolink’s camera catalog. Optical zoom can frame a gate or distant area more effectively than digital cropping. Before choosing it for remote adjustment, verify that the Reolink profile selected in Surveillance Station exposes the controls you need; a working stream alone does not prove that zoom control is integrated.
Wide-area coverage: Duo models
Reolink’s PoE catalog lists the Duo 3 PoE and Duo 3V PoE as 16MP panoramic cameras with 180-degree coverage. A panoramic or dual-lens model may appear as a combined view or as more than one channel, depending on model and integration method. Reolink says ONVIF may add only channel 1 by default for Duo Wi-Fi and Duo PoE models, while the Reolink protocol can expose the second channel. Confirm how the desired view appears in Surveillance Station and whether each separately added channel consumes a license before purchase.
Tracking or mechanical PTZ: TrackMix PoE and RLC-823 series
Synology’s camera list identifies TrackMix PoE with PT patrol and PT speed functions for Surveillance Station 6.0.3 or later. Reolink’s catalog lists the RLC-823S2 with 16× optical zoom, 360-degree coverage, and auto tracking. These are specialized choices for larger areas, not automatic upgrades for every installation: check whether both views, PTZ controls, and event features work through the selected profile. Camera-side auto tracking and control by Surveillance Station are separate capabilities.
Doorbell: Video Doorbell PoE
Synology lists Reolink Video Doorbell PoE and Wi-Fi models with intercom classification and audio input/output. If you want visitor alerts in Surveillance Station, Reolink recommends adding a supported doorbell through the Reolink protocol. Test the doorbell press event, notification path, two-way talk, and chime behavior separately; success in the Reolink app does not establish that Synology receives the same events.

Check these details before ordering
- Match the exact model. Search the exact model in the Synology camera list and check Reolink’s protocol support table. Similar model numbers, another hardware revision, or support with a Reolink NVR are not proof of identical Surveillance Station behavior.
- Confirm power and network. For a PoE camera, check the switch or injector’s PoE standard and total power budget, cable length and outdoor protection, and whether the camera and NAS can communicate across any VLAN or firewall rules. Prefer wired Ethernet for critical views and high-bitrate streams.
- Check the stream profile. Confirm main- and substream codecs, resolution, and frame rate, then check that Surveillance Station and the NAS can record and play them. Synology’s model entry can show integrated codecs and maximum resolution; browser and mobile playback may impose further limits.
- Verify each wanted function separately. Check AI events, PTZ and zoom control, audio input/output, intercom, doorbell alerts, and every lens or channel. Camera-side features are not automatically passed to the NAS.
- Count camera channels and licenses. Surveillance Station commonly includes a limited number of camera licenses with a NAS; additional camera additions require licenses. A physical dual-lens camera can use more than one license if its views are added as separate channels. Determine the channel configuration you will actually use before calculating cost.
- Plan recording storage and resilience. Capacity depends on camera count, bitrate, codec, frame rate, continuous versus event recording, and retention period. A camera’s microSD slot is separate from NAS recording; for example, the RLC-810A supports microSD as well as network streaming. Consider PoE infrastructure, a UPS, and storage alongside the camera price.
How to add a Reolink camera to Surveillance Station
Start with a stable camera address, ideally a DHCP reservation, current firmware, and a working camera account. In the Reolink App, the relevant controls are under Device Settings > Network > Advanced; in the Reolink Client, use Device Settings > Network > Advanced > Server settings. Enable only the services needed for the chosen integration. The default ports Reolink cites in its guide are HTTP 80, ONVIF 8000, and RTSP 554; use the values actually configured on the camera, since ports can be changed.
Preferred route: Reolink protocol
- In Surveillance Station, open IP Camera and choose Add or Add Manually.
- Select Reolink as the brand and choose the exact camera model or an appropriate supported profile.
- Enter the camera’s IP address, username, password, and HTTP port if requested. Reolink identifies port 80 as the default HTTP port.
- Authenticate, select an appropriate stream profile, and complete Quick Setup.
- Test Live View and recording, then test audio, detection events, PTZ, and notifications individually if they matter to your use case.
Use this method first when the model supports it and you need Reolink-specific AI, PTZ, or doorbell behavior. It does not mean every feature is available for every camera.
Fallback route: ONVIF
- In IP Camera, choose Add and search the LAN or select ONVIF.
- Enter the camera credentials and its configured ONVIF port. Reolink gives 8000 as a default, not a universal setting.
- Complete Quick Setup and check the main stream, substream, audio, motion events, and controls one by one.
Basic stream route: RTSP
Reolink’s general main-stream URL pattern is:
rtsp://username:password@camera-ip:554/Preview_01_main
The commonly used substream pattern is:
rtsp://username:password@camera-ip:554/Preview_01_sub

The camera is not discovered
- Confirm the NAS and camera can communicate on the LAN; separate VLANs, firewall rules, Wi-Fi client isolation, or an incorrect address can block discovery.
- Check that initial camera setup is complete and that ONVIF is enabled with the configured port.
- Try adding it manually by IP address. If discovery still fails, try the Reolink profile, then ONVIF, then RTSP for video.
- If the camera is connected behind a Reolink NVR, confirm it is available as an independent network device before attempting direct integration.
Synology explains manual integration options for unsupported cameras in its Generic/ONVIF/User Defined setup guide.
Live view works, but recording does not
Check the stream path, codec, bitrate and resolution, recording schedule, storage permissions and available volume space. A NAS that cannot handle the selected stream or an unstable Wi-Fi connection can also interrupt recording. Test a lower-resolution substream first, then try the main stream.

Video records, but AI events are missing
A recorded stream does not prove that event metadata is reaching Surveillance Station. RTSP and generic ONVIF may provide video without Reolink AI events. Where available, try the Reolink protocol and verify the specific model and event type; Reolink recommends that route for AI features in its integration guide.
PTZ or optical zoom controls are missing
Check that the selected model profile is PTZ-capable and that the camera was not added solely as an RTSP User Defined stream. Reolink recommends its protocol for PTZ models. Auto tracking performed by the camera does not necessarily mean Surveillance Station can command the camera.
A dual-lens camera shows one view or uses two licenses
Check whether the camera exposes a combined panoramic stream or separate channels through the protocol you selected. For Duo Wi-Fi and Duo PoE models, Reolink documents that ONVIF may expose only channel 1 by default, while the Reolink protocol can expose the second channel. A separately added lens can require another Surveillance Station license; that is a channel-count issue, not necessarily a fault.
H.265 playback fails on some devices
Recording and playback compatibility can differ. Older NAS hardware, browser or mobile-client support, and hardware decoding affect playback. If broad client compatibility matters more than bandwidth savings, test H.264; use H.265 only after checking the NAS and the clients you rely on. A lower-resolution substream can also be useful for mobile viewing. Check Synology’s model compatibility entries for listed codec integration.

What the total cost includes
Do not compare camera prices alone. The system may also require Synology camera licenses, a PoE switch or injector, Ethernet cable and outdoor protection, NAS storage, and a UPS. A multi-lens camera can change the license count if its views are configured as separate channels. No current license price is stated here; check Synology’s current terms for the NAS and Surveillance Station version you use.
For storage planning, estimate from the cameras’ actual bitrate and your recording schedule rather than using a universal retention figure. More cameras, higher frame rates, continuous recording, and longer retention increase capacity needs; codec and motion-based recording change the result. Optional microSD recording is local to the camera and does not replace centralized NAS retention.
Quick Recap
Which setup should you choose?
- Choose a fixed PoE model such as the RLC-810A for a straightforward, continuously powered view when 4K detail is useful.
- Choose the CX410 category when low-light color is more important than maximum resolution, and the scene has enough ambient light.
- Choose optical zoom or PTZ only when you need adjustable framing or active coverage, and after confirming control integration.
- Choose a Duo or tracking model for a genuinely wide area, but verify channels, stream behavior, NAS capacity, and license count first.
- Choose a doorbell model only after verifying that the desired visitor events and intercom functions work through the selected Synology profile.
- Avoid battery-first cameras for direct continuous Surveillance Station recording.
