Use it for an archive, hobby project, or historical reconstruction—preferably on a staging server or isolated VPS. For a new public community, choose maintained forum software instead.
First identify your package. The archived SourceForge listing shows ib315a.zip as its latest listed package, while older files such as ib312a.zip and Ikonboard 2.x distributions use different layouts and installers. Do not mix files or follow a 2.x guide for a 3.x installation.
Before installing: identify the version and purpose
Check the archive
ib315a.zipgenerally indicates the Ikonboard 3.1.5a-era package.ib312a.zipindicates an older 3.1.2a package.- Ikonboard 2.x packages have older documentation, different paths, and a different storage model.
The SourceForge project file listing is an archive, not evidence of active maintenance: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ikonboard/files/. Keep an untouched copy of the exact archive, record its filename, and verify a checksum when one is available.
Choose the right use case
- Existing board: back up everything and work on a cloned staging copy.
- Historical reconstruction: use a disposable VM, container, or private subdomain.
- New public forum: evaluate maintained software instead of exposing unsupported CGI code.
Ikonboard 3.x moved beyond the flat-file model used by earlier 2.1.x releases and historically supported database-backed storage; the exact behavior depends on the package you have. See the version history at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikonboard.

Check hosting compatibility
Ask the host to confirm all of these before uploading:
- Perl CGI execution and executable
.cgifiles. - The Perl modules required by your exact Ikonboard release.
- Writable application directories and permission or ownership control.
- Access to web-server error logs.
- FTP, SFTP, SSH, or another reliable upload method.
- A way to remove or restrict the installer after setup.
- HTTPS and restorable backups.
DreamHost documents Perl and CGI support, but that does not prove Ikonboard compatibility: https://help.dreamhost.com/hc/en-us/articles/217141627-Supported-and-unsupported-technologies. A VPS gives more control over Apache or Nginx, Perl, modules, permissions, and logs, but you must maintain the operating system and security. DigitalOcean describes Droplets as suitable for low-traffic sites and forums; its pricing page lists Droplets from $4/month, before backups, domains, monitoring, email, or control-panel costs: https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing.
Back up an existing Ikonboard first
A download is not necessarily a restorable backup. Preserve:
- The complete CGI directory and configuration files.
- Images, avatars, emoticons, skins, and uploads.
- All flat-file data directories.
- A database dump if the board uses MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or another database.
.htaccessand web-server configuration.- The Perl version, installed modules, and relevant server settings.
Restore the copy on a separate host before attempting an upgrade. Never overwrite the only working installation. Historical upgrade notices show why: a 2009 Ikonboard 3.1.5 deployment notice warned that 3.1.2a skins were incompatible and could be deleted during upgrade (https://www.kagoya.jp/news/2009010816353/).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrepare the directory layout
Follow the folders in your own archive. A typical older 2.1.9 arrangement separates executable CGI files from public assets:
/home/USER/public_html/cgi-bin/ikonboard/
*.cgi
data/
help/
members/
messages/
/home/USER/public_html/ikonboard/
images/
avatars/
emoticons/
Ikonboard 3.x packages may instead include an iB_html or similarly named public directory. Do not create paths that are absent from your archive. The historical 2.1.9 layout and installer instructions are documented at https://remu3002.tripod.com/board/first_install.html.

Upload files correctly
- Preserve filenames, capitalization, and extensions exactly.
- Upload CGI and Perl files without text corruption. The old guide specifies ASCII mode for CGI files; binary mode is specified for images and other assets. Modern clients may choose automatically, but verify the result.
- Ensure the upload completed; an omitted CGI or data file can cause misleading errors.
- Place scripts in the host’s configured CGI directory or ScriptAlias location. A normal public directory will serve them as text unless CGI is enabled there.
Configure Perl and permissions
Set the interpreter path
Inspect the first line of the CGI scripts, commonly:
#!/usr/bin/perl
Some hosts use /usr/local/bin/perl or another path. Ask the host for the correct executable and update the shebang consistently. The historical FAQ identifies an incorrect Perl path as a common cause of HTTP 500 errors: https://remu3002.tripod.com/board/help.html.

Use least privilege
Old instructions often recommend CGI mode 0755 and data directories set to 0777. Treat those as historical, not safe defaults. Prefer correct ownership or group permissions and the narrowest writable mode:
Rank #4
find /path/to/ikonboard -type f -name '*.cgi' -exec chmod 755 {} ;
chmod 750 /path/to/ikonboard/data
chmod 750 /path/to/ikonboard/members
chmod 750 /path/to/ikonboard/messages
These commands are examples only. The web-server account must be able to write where the installer and board require it. Avoid chmod -R 777; if a legacy host requires world-writable directories, isolate the installation and do not treat it as a secure public deployment.
Run the installer
Find the correct filename
Older documentation uses:
https://example.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/install.cgi
Some 3.x packages use installer.cgi or place it in a version-specific directory. Use the filename included in your archive.
Enter URLs and filesystem paths correctly
| Field | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| CGI URL | https://example.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard |
Browser URL of the CGI directory, without the installer filename or trailing slash |
| CGI path | /home/user/public_html/cgi-bin/ikonboard |
Server filesystem path, not a URL |
| Public URL | https://example.com/ikonboard |
Browser URL for images and other assets |
| Public path | /home/user/public_html/ikonboard |
Filesystem path for those assets |
| Perl path | /usr/bin/perl |
Interpreter used by the scripts |
Historical help explains the CGI path distinction at https://ritwikagrawal.tripod.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/INSTALL_DATA/cgi_path.html. The CGI URL format is described at https://rmariebrown.tripod.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/INSTALL_DATA/cgi_url.html, and the public/non-CGI URL at https://artmine.tripod.com/cgi-bin/Upload_Files/cgi-bin/INSTALL_DATA/non-cgi_url.html.

Create the administrator
Complete the installer’s administrator stage with a unique username and a long password that is not reused elsewhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test and secure the board
- Open the front page and confirm images and styles load.
- Test guest viewing, registration, login, logout, posting, replies, and administrator access.
- Test uploads or avatars only if you intend to enable them.
- Check email notifications separately.
- Delete or rename the installer, or block it at the server.
- Prevent direct web access to data, member, message, and configuration directories.
- Disable directory listings, enable HTTPS, and create a restorable backup.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | First checks and recovery |
|---|---|
| Perl source appears in the browser | CGI is disabled, the script is outside the CGI directory, or execute permission is missing. Move it to the configured CGI location, enable CGI, check the shebang, and inspect the error log. |
| HTTP 500 | Check the error log immediately, then verify Perl path, modules, syntax, line endings, ownership, permissions, and complete upload. Run perl -c /path/to/installer.cgi and perl -v; syntax checking does not detect every runtime problem. |
boardinfo.cgi cannot be found |
Confirm the file and data directory exist, the CGI path is correct, and the installer can write there. Restore the original data directory if setup was partial. |
| Administrator login loops | Check that member data was created and writable, then check cookies, HTTP/HTTPS consistency, hostname, reverse-proxy rewrites, and stale browser cookies. |
| Images or avatars are missing | Verify public URL and path, directory placement, case-sensitive filenames, and read permissions. Do not add a trailing slash if the package’s installer help forbids it. |

Shared hosting, VPS, or local installation?
Shared hosting
Shared hosting reduces server administration, but providers may disable legacy CGI, omit required modules, restrict permissions, or limit logs. Confirm the exact package in a staging account before paying for a long-term deployment.
VPS
A VPS lets you reproduce an older Perl/CGI environment and control logs and permissions. It also makes you responsible for patching, firewalling, TLS, backups, DNS, monitoring, and abuse prevention. DigitalOcean’s Linux overview is at https://www.digitalocean.com/solutions/linux-hosting. cPanel adds a separate license after its trial and does not transfer server-maintenance responsibility to the provider: https://www.digitalocean.com/solutions/cpanel-hosting.
Local or isolated hosting
A VM, container, or private subdomain is the safest choice for recovering old posts and testing upgrades. Keep it inaccessible from the public internet until the code and upload behavior have been evaluated.
Should you install Ikonboard for a new forum?
Install it only when preserving Ikonboard compatibility matters more than current maintenance and security. For a new community, a maintained forum platform is generally the better choice. If the goal is only to preserve historical posts, exporting them to a static archive avoids running writable legacy CGI. Migration may be possible, but use a provider who understands Perl CGI, flat files or legacy databases, permissions, character encoding, and forum data preservation.
