Check your hosts file, DNS filter, ad blocker, antivirus, firewall, proxy, VPN, and network policy. If only one advertiser’s link fails, the URL may be incomplete, expired, malformed, or subject to a deep-link restriction.
LinkSynergy is part of Rakuten Advertising’s affiliate infrastructure. A tracking URL records the click and then redirects you to the advertiser; it is not usually the store’s final URL. Rakuten documents the process at Tracking Links and Landing Page URLs.
First identify what is failing
Test two or three unrelated LinkSynergy links, the advertiser’s direct homepage, another browser, and (if possible) a phone hotspot. Record whether the redirect fails before the store opens or whether the store opens but attribution is missing.
| What you observe | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Every LinkSynergy link fails in every browser | Hosts-file, DNS, firewall, antivirus, router, ISP, or organizational filtering |
| It works in another browser | Extension, browser profile, proxy, cache, cookie, or browser security setting |
| It works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi | Router, DNS provider, workplace/school network, or ISP filtering |
| Only one advertiser’s link fails | Malformed or expired URL, advertiser outage, or program restriction |
| The advertiser opens at its home page | Invalid destination or an advertiser that disallows deep links |
| The store opens but no commission is recorded | Tracking parameters, cookies, attribution rules, or advertiser conditions—not necessarily navigation |
Browser, extension, proxy, DNS, and security-software comparisons are also recommended in Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance: Firefox and other browsers can’t load websites.
#1 Best Overall
Check the URL before changing anything
A typical Rakuten tracking URL resembles:
https://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=...&offerid=...&subid=...&type=...
- The host should be
click.linksynergy.com, usually with a path such as/fs-bin/click. - The query string after
?carries publisher and offer data. A link copied without that portion may not identify the offer. - Do not remove parameters to make navigation work if tracking matters; doing so can destroy attribution.
- Do not publish a private affiliate URL containing account-specific identifiers.
Rakuten’s link-code documentation explains the publisher ID, offer ID, link type, and redirect host: Link Code. An 11-character encrypted publisher ID appears in Rakuten examples, but formatting is not a universal validator for every link type.
Get a fresh HTTPS link
The original question used http://. Current Rakuten examples use https://, so return to the publisher’s page and copy a newly generated HTTPS link rather than manually rebuilding the old one. Test it in a private window. HTTP is not automatically broken, but an old or copied URL may be redirected, blocked, or truncated.
Rank #2
- Open the publisher’s current page.
- Copy the complete link again, including everything after
?. - Prefer the publisher’s current
https://click.linksynergy.com/...version. - Test without deleting parameters or replacing the URL with an untracked retailer link.
Inspect the hosts file
The historical AnandTech case behind this question was fixed by removing LinkSynergy entries from the Windows hosts file, including related affiliate links. That is strong evidence for that 2004 incident, not proof that every modern failure has the same cause. See the original report at AnandTech.
Windows
- Back up the file, then open Notepad as Administrator.
- Choose File > Open, browse to
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts, and change the file filter to All files. - Look for lines containing
linksynergy.com,click.linksynergy.com, orad.linksynergy.com, especially mappings to0.0.0.0,127.0.0.1, or another local address. - Do not delete unrelated entries blindly. Comment a suspicious line with
#or restore a trusted backup. - Save the file, open Command Prompt, and run
ipconfig /flushdns. Restart the browser.
macOS and Linux
Back up and inspect /etc/hosts with administrator privileges. Look for LinkSynergy domains mapped to 0.0.0.0, 127.0.0.1, or another non-routable address. DNS-cache commands differ by macOS release and Linux resolver, so use your system’s documented method or restart the resolver instead of applying one universal command.
Test extensions and content blockers
Open the URL in a private window or a clean browser profile. If it works, disable extensions one at a time, starting with:
Rank #3
- Ad and anti-tracking blockers
- Cookie-control and script-blocking tools
- Shopping, coupon, redirect, or URL-rewriting extensions
- Security extensions that inspect web requests
Allowing one redirect domain temporarily for diagnosis is different from disabling browser security globally. Mozilla discusses extensions and page-manipulation tools at Firefox can’t load websites but other browsers can.
Check antivirus, firewall, DNS, proxy, and VPN
Security software
Web shields may classify affiliate tracking as advertising and block it. Review web protection, URL filtering, anti-tracking, DNS protection, browser-specific rules, and shopping protection. Run only a short diagnostic test, restore protection immediately, and create an exception only if the vendor considers the domain safe. Mozilla recommends checking security applications rather than leaving them disabled.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →DNS and network
Flush stale DNS data with ipconfig /flushdns on Windows, restart the router, and compare your normal connection with a phone hotspot. You may also compare your default DNS service with a reputable alternative. A workplace, school, hotel, or public network may intentionally block tracking domains; do not bypass such controls without permission.
Proxy and VPN
Compare browser and operating-system proxy settings, VPN on versus off, and browser DNS-over-HTTPS settings where available. A broken proxy, VPN filter, or corporate gateway can interrupt the redirect. Mozilla lists proxy and security configuration among common causes at its browser troubleshooting page.
Clear affected site data
If the redirect loops or shows an error after loading, clear cookies and cached files for click.linksynergy.com, the advertiser, and, if needed, the publisher. Clear only those sites when possible because deleting all data signs you out elsewhere. Mozilla covers cookie and cache-related loading failures at Websites don’t load: troubleshoot and fix errors.
For publishers: validate the redirect
Publishers should generate links from Rakuten’s dashboard or approved tools, then verify the complete redirect path:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBest Value
publisher page → click.linksynergy.com → advertiser domain → product or offer page
Rakuten’s testing instructions are at Test Affiliate Links. Browser developer tools or a reputable redirect-inspection extension can show each hop; avoid sending private affiliate URLs to unknown checker websites.
Missing required values in a manually created deep link can produce an error. Some advertisers restrict deep links and send visitors to their home page even when the tracking URL is valid. See Create Deep Links Outside the Dashboard.
A successful redirect does not guarantee a commission. Cookie restrictions, return-day windows, advertiser rules, altered parameters, and other attribution conditions are separate from navigation. Rakuten’s missing-sales guidance is at Find Missing Sales or Orders in Reports.

When the link itself is broken
- Truncated copy: email, forum, or plain-text wrapping removed part of the query string.
- Expired offer: the advertiser withdrew the promotion or changed its program.
- Unavailable destination: the product page is gone even though the retailer’s homepage works.
- Deep-link restriction: the advertiser permits tracking but not that product-page destination.
- Advertiser outage: the redirect works, but the final site is temporarily unavailable.
Ask the publisher for a newly generated link. Publishers should contact the advertiser’s affiliate team or Rakuten Advertising support after checking the prefix, encrypted ID, required parameters, and redirect behavior.
Safety and privacy
click.linksynergy.com is an official Rakuten Advertising tracking domain; the presence of affiliate tracking alone does not prove malware. Assess the final advertiser separately and decide whether you want tracking cookies. Do not download “LinkSynergy fix” utilities, install registry cleaners, delete the entire hosts file without a backup, or permanently disable antivirus, firewall, or browser protections. Rakuten’s policy context discusses software that blocks or alters tracking links: Affiliate Network Policies.
