Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The quickest fix is usually to select your headphones under Start > Settings > System > Sound, raise the volume, and make the headphones the default playback device. If they remain silent, work through the checks below in order: physical connection, app volume, disabled devices, enhancements, Get Help troubleshooting, audio services, drivers, and— for Bluetooth— pairing and profile settings.
1. Make the quick hardware checks
- Check the headphones’ power button, inline mute switch, volume wheel, and battery.
- For 3.5 mm headphones, remove and firmly reinsert the plug. Use the headphone/output jack, not a microphone-only jack. On a desktop, test both front and rear jacks.
- For USB headsets, connect directly to another USB port instead of a hub or dock.
- For Bluetooth headphones, make sure they are not still connected to a phone, tablet, or another computer.
- Temporarily disconnect HDMI monitors, USB docks, speakers, and other audio devices that Windows might select instead.
- Test the headphones on another computer or phone. If they fail there too, the cable, connector, battery, or headset itself is probably defective.
Microsoft recommends checking connections, trying another USB port, and testing whether sound returns when headphones are unplugged (Microsoft audio troubleshooting).
2. Select the headphones as the Windows output
- Select the speaker icon on the taskbar.
- Open the device-selection arrow and choose the headphones, not laptop speakers, an HDMI monitor, dock, or another output.
- Alternatively, open Start > Settings > System > Sound and select the headphones under Output.
- Raise the master volume and confirm mute is off.
A monitor can be selected as an HDMI output even when it has no speakers, making connected headphones appear silent. USB and HDMI devices may also need to be selected manually as the default output.
3. Set them as the default playback device
- Open Control Panel from Start.
- Choose Hardware and Sound > Sound, then open the Playback tab.
- Right-click the headphone entry and select Set as Default Device.
- If it is missing, right-click an empty area and enable Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices, where available.
- Right-click a disabled headphone device, choose Enable, then set it as default.
These labels can vary by Windows 10 build and audio driver. Microsoft documents this Control Panel route for selecting default playback devices (source).

4. Check Volume mixer and the application
- Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and select Open Volume mixer.
- Raise the main volume and the affected app’s slider; make sure neither is muted.
- Test a second app, such as a browser video and a local audio file.
- Check the app’s own audio-output menu. Games, meeting software, music players, and browsers can route audio independently of Windows.
- Close and reopen the app after changing the Windows output.
If every app is silent, continue with device, service, and driver checks. If only one app is silent, its mixer or internal output setting is the more likely cause. Microsoft’s low-volume guidance covers per-app controls (source).
5. Disable audio enhancements
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound and select the headphones.
- Open Properties or the device’s advanced properties.
- On the Enhancements tab, select Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects.
- If there is no Enhancements tab, look under Advanced or for an Audio enhancements control.
- Select OK and test.
Enhancement names and locations depend on the PC manufacturer and driver; disabling them is a compatibility test, not a guaranteed cure. Microsoft lists enhancements as a possible cause of missing or quiet sound (source).

6. Run the Windows 10 audio troubleshooter
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Search for or launch the audio troubleshooter.
- Follow its prompts and apply any suggested fix.
- Test the headphones again.
Get Help can diagnose common configuration problems, but it cannot repair failed hardware or every manufacturer-specific driver conflict. Microsoft identifies it as the Windows 10 route for automated audio troubleshooting (source).
7. Restart Windows audio services
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and select Restart.
- Test playback.
This is useful when Windows detects the headphones but playback is stuck, including after sleep. If Restart is unavailable, do not change registry values or startup settings as an initial fix; restart Windows and continue with driver checks. See Microsoft’s service guidance (source).

8. Update, roll back, or reinstall the audio driver
Update in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager from Start.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device, choose Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test.
If an update caused the failure
Open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if that button is available. Windows only offers rollback when it retained a previous driver.
Reinstall from the correct manufacturer
- In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows so it can redetect the hardware.
- If necessary, install the Windows 10 driver for the exact PC, motherboard, headset, or Bluetooth-adapter model from its manufacturer’s support site.
Do not use generic driver-updater utilities as a first choice. Device Manager may not contain the newest manufacturer driver; Microsoft recommends obtaining the latest compatible package from the device maker (driver guidance).

9. Bluetooth headphones: follow this separate branch
Choose the Bluetooth output
Select the taskbar speaker icon and choose the Bluetooth headset. Then confirm the same device under Start > Settings > System > Sound. Pairing alone does not make it the active playback device.
Remove and pair again
- Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
- Select the headphones, choose Remove device, and turn them off and on.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device and pair again.
Restart Bluetooth and update its adapter
Turn Bluetooth off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it on again. In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, update the adapter with Update driver > Search automatically for drivers, and restart the PC.

10. Use the symptom to choose the next check
| What you see | Most useful next checks |
|---|---|
| Headphones appear but are silent | Output selection, mute and Volume mixer, default device, enhancements, audio services, then drivers. |
| Headphones do not appear | Reconnect the plug, try another USB port, bypass a hub or dock, show disabled/disconnected devices, check Bluetooth pairing, and inspect Device Manager. |
| Device Manager shows a warning icon | Record the exact device name and error code; install the correct manufacturer driver rather than deleting unrelated audio devices. |
| Speakers work but headphones do not | Test another headset in the same jack and test the suspect headset elsewhere. |
| Headphones work but speakers do not | Check output selection and the speaker device; headphone-driver reinstallation is unlikely to help. |
| Only one application is silent | Check Volume mixer and that application’s own output setting. |
| Sound stopped immediately after an update | Use Roll Back Driver if available, or install the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s Windows 10 package. |
11. When hardware is probably at fault
Hardware becomes more likely when the headphones fail on multiple devices, another headset works in the same jack, moving the plug causes intermittent sound, the cable or connector is damaged, a USB headset is unrecognized on multiple known-good ports, or Bluetooth headphones fail with several computers and phones. Those tests are diagnostic inferences, not absolute guarantees; a faulty port and a faulty headset can produce similar symptoms.
12. Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 still runs, but free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided normally. Eligible consumer devices can receive Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027. This end-of-support status does not itself mute headphones, but it means a future Windows Update is not guaranteed to supply a driver; check your computer or accessory manufacturer’s Windows 10 support page (Microsoft lifecycle details).
