1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFixed horizontal black rows that remain visible over the Samsung PN50B650’s own menu or no-signal screen usually point to an internal display fault—not an HDMI cable or picture setting. First check whether the lines also appear on the TV’s own screens; that simple test helps separate a source problem from a likely panel or display-drive failure.
What the lines can tell you
The position and behavior of the defect matter more than the fact that it looks black. In a 2020 owner report, a PN50B650 showed roughly seven horizontal dark rows in the lower half of the screen, including adjacent rows that formed a thicker band. That account documents the symptom, but it does not establish which component failed or whether a repair succeeded. Read the PN50B650 owner report.
- One or several thin rows fixed in place: If they remain at the same screen coordinates on every input, they are consistent with a row-addressing or panel-side fault.
- A broad horizontal band: Several adjacent rows, a scan section, or a wider panel-drive problem could be involved. Width alone does not identify the failed part.
- Lines on only one input: Check the device, cable, AV receiver or switch, TV input, and source resolution before suspecting the panel.
- Moving, flickering, or content-dependent lines: A signal-processing, board, or intermittent connection issue is more plausible than a permanently dead row.
- Lines that appear after startup: Watch for several minutes and note whether they fade, move, or remain fixed. This behavior may help a technician distinguish an intermittent fault.
- Image retention: A retained logo or other image pattern is not the same as a permanently dark horizontal row. A fixed row suggests an electrical or structural display problem rather than a retained picture.
Check whether the fault is inside the TV
The key test is whether a line appears over graphics generated by the television itself. The PN50B650 is in Samsung’s PN50B650 family; the official Canadian support page identifies the related full model PN50B650S1F and lists its manuals and historical downloads. Samsung PN50B650S1FXZC support.
- Photograph the screen with a plain white or gray image, if available. A solid-color image can make the number and positions of affected rows easier to record.
- Press MENU, then INFO. Check whether the line crosses the TV-generated overlay.
- Switch to another input. If possible, test a different device and cable as well.
- Turn the TV off and disconnect external sources, including HDMI, component, and antenna cables.
- Unplug the TV from the wall for several minutes, reconnect power, and turn it on with no external source attached.
- Check the TV’s own no-signal screen. Record whether the lines remain at the same screen coordinates.
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Lines appear on one device or input only | Source device, cable, receiver, input, or signal-processing issue is possible. | Try another cable, source, and TV input; check the source’s output resolution. |
| Lines appear on every source but not on the TV menu | Retest on the no-signal screen. If the result holds, an input or video-processing path may be involved. | Have a technician assess the signal path before replacing parts. |
| Lines cross the menu or remain on the no-signal screen | The problem is inside the TV. A display-drive or panel fault becomes the leading concern. | Record the symptom for a technician; do not assume a particular board has failed. |
| Lines change with resolution, flicker, or appear intermittently | A signal-processing, board, thermal, or marginal connection problem is possible. | Note the conditions and timing; an intermittent fault may justify diagnosis before buying parts. |
Likely causes, from most to least consistent
Panel row circuitry or bonded connections
A plasma panel uses row and column electrodes, with driver connections that address individual areas of the display. A row that stays dark in exactly the same location across inputs and over the TV’s own graphics is consistent with a panel-side row-driver or bonded-connection failure. Bonded panel connections are generally not practical for a consumer to repair.

Scan, sustain, or buffer circuitry
Plasma sets also use drive electronics to control addressing and sustain operations. Depending on the exact chassis and defect, a failed board or scan section can cause missing rows or a band. The symptom alone cannot establish that a particular board is bad; it requires model-specific diagnosis and measurements.
Internal connector or another board
A damaged or marginal connector can cause an intermittent defect. A main board or video-processing fault is more plausible when the problem depends on a particular input, resolution, or signal path than when identical rows remain visible on every TV screen.

External source or cable
A source device, HDMI cable, AV receiver, or switch can cause picture artifacts. These are worth checking when the defect is limited to that signal path, but they are poor first purchases if the same rows cross the TV’s menu or no-signal screen.
Would a reset or firmware update help?
A power cycle and, if needed, a factory reset can rule out some settings or temporary software problems. They are diagnostic steps, not likely cures for fixed rows that remain on the TV’s own menu. Samsung’s support page lists firmware version 1012.3, dated September 22, 2009, and a firmware-upgrade guide dated September 6, 2009. These are historical files; their presence is not evidence of a current update or a software fix for a physically failed row. Check Samsung’s model support page.

If you choose to reset the television, use the factory-reset procedure in the user manual’s on-screen menu. Afterward, reconnect sources one at a time. Do not treat firmware flashing as the primary remedy for a defect that remains visible with no source connected. Limit home troubleshooting to external checks: isolate inputs, power-cycle the TV, inspect accessible cables, and note what appears on the menu and no-signal screen. A plasma television contains high-voltage circuits and capacitors that may retain charge after unplugging. Its glass panel and internal connections are fragile, and the chassis is heavy and awkward to handle.

Do not open the rear cover, probe high-voltage circuits, defeat protection circuits, or disconnect panel ribbons while powered unless you are trained and equipped to service plasma televisions. A wrong probe or handling error can injure you or cause further damage.
Repair or replace?
Repair makes the most sense when a technician identifies a specific replaceable board or connector fault, the lines are intermittent, or the set has enough personal or enthusiast value to justify the cost. It may also suit an experienced hobbyist working with a donor set, but buying parts based only on the phrase “horizontal black lines” is a gamble.

If the diagnosis is panel failure or a bonded-driver failure, replacement is usually the practical option for a television of this age. A complete panel replacement is generally unattractive economically; confirm local parts and labor costs rather than assuming availability or price. A 2020 owner report noted that the set had been in use for about a decade and that replacement with a newer 4K television was under consideration. That is an individual account, not a repair-cost benchmark. See the owner’s report.
Before approving work, ask the repair shop:
- Do the lines appear over the TV menu and no-signal screen?
- Is the estimate for a board, connector, panel, or bonded-driver repair?
- Was the proposed replacement part tested, and is it returnable?
- Will labor still be charged if a replacement part does not resolve the symptom?
- Is a compatible panel available, and what is the total cost including transport and disposal?
Third-party listings advertise service documentation for the PN50B650, but these are not Samsung-hosted sources; verify the exact suffix and chassis, document contents, seller, and refund terms before relying on one. A service manual is a poor fit if you will not safely service the set or if a technician has confirmed panel failure. eManualOnline listing; Sellfy listing.
