OpenAI released features addressing many of those needs, but no representative public OpenAI poll establishes a definitive worldwide ranking of the most-requested features.
How to read this feature wishlist
This is an evidence-weighted synthesis of recurring public user discussions, a published 2025 wishlist, OpenAI’s product announcements, and releases addressing longstanding usability gaps. It is not an official OpenAI ranking, and the features below are grouped rather than assigned vote-based places. Community posts and wishlists are self-selected; a launch shows product direction, not necessarily how many users requested it.
The list reflects a broad shift in expectations: users increasingly wanted ChatGPT to remember, search, connect to their information, and act—not only generate answers. OpenAI’s release notes document what shipped, not a ranked request database. Public wishlist coverage also included an adult mode, but that is better treated as a segment-specific request than a mainstream consensus (The Decoder’s 2025 wishlist report).
The most consistent requests—and what changed
1. Memory that keeps useful context
Users wanted to stop repeating preferences, project details, and writing conventions. OpenAI expanded memory in 2025 so ChatGPT could reference recent conversations: the June rollout included broader memory improvements for Free users, while Plus and Pro received enhanced memory and chat-history reference, subject to regional and account availability. In August, project-only memory added a way to keep a project’s context from influencing unrelated chats. OpenAI initially made that option available on web and Windows, with other platforms to follow (ChatGPT release notes; ChatGPT release notes).

Memory is not unlimited recall. Saved memories, reference to chat history, current-chat context, and project-only memory are distinct mechanisms. Users can review memory controls under Settings → Personalization → Memory; available controls and features may vary by plan and location.
2. Agents that can carry out multi-step tasks
A recurring request was to move from “tell me how” to “help me do it”: research options, work with files, browse sites, or handle repetitive steps. OpenAI introduced ChatGPT agent in July 2025 for paid consumer and team users, then expanded availability to Enterprise and Edu in August. It combines reasoning, web research, uploaded files, connected sources, and actions such as editing spreadsheets or filling forms, with checkpoints and approval flows (Enterprise and Edu release notes).
An agent can misunderstand an instruction or encounter a changed website, and a completed plan does not guarantee successful execution. Review its intended sources and permissions, require confirmation before consequential or irreversible actions, and check the result. Treat access to accounts, messages, purchases, and private information as a permission and security decision—not as routine automation.
3. More useful web search and research
Users wanted current answers, stronger sourcing, and less manual searching. OpenAI launched deep research in February 2025 as a more structured capability that investigates sources and returns a cited report; initial access and usage limits varied by plan and geography (OpenAI’s deep research announcement). In June, OpenAI described improvements to ordinary ChatGPT search, including better instruction following, longer conversational context, multiple searches for difficult questions, and image-based search (ChatGPT release notes).
Rank #2
These are related but different tools: ordinary search serves conversational queries, while deep research is slower and produces a more structured investigation. Neither guarantees factual accuracy. For important work, ask for primary sources, publication dates, conflicting evidence, and a clear separation between confirmed facts and inference; then inspect the citations yourself.
4. Connections to personal and workplace information
Instead of copying material into prompts, users wanted ChatGPT to work with the information already in email, cloud storage, calendars, code repositories, and business tools. OpenAI’s 2025 releases added or expanded connectors for services including Google Drive, SharePoint, Dropbox, Box, Outlook, Gmail, Google Calendar, Linear, GitHub, HubSpot, and Microsoft Teams. Some plans and workspaces also gained custom connectors using Model Context Protocol. Availability differs by plan, region, and whether a connector is used for chat or deep research (ChatGPT release notes).
A connection does not mean unrestricted access or perfect understanding. Workspace administrators may need to approve connectors, and organizations should review permissions and data-handling rules. Search or retrieval from a connected service is also not necessarily the same as syncing all its contents into ChatGPT.
5. Voice that feels more conversational
Requests included faster turn-taking, more natural expression, better interruption handling, translation, and reliable access across plans. OpenAI upgraded Advanced Voice during 2025, highlighting more natural and expressive conversation and improved translation. The upgrades began rolling out to Free users in July, with different usage limits from paid plans. In September, OpenAI said Advanced Voice access for Free users had expanded and that Standard Voice would remain available temporarily while it addressed feedback from people who preferred it (ChatGPT release notes; ChatGPT release notes).
Rank #3
Voice availability and experience can depend on device, operating system, network, region, account plan, and whether Advanced or Standard Voice is in use. The changes did not make access or usage identical for every account.
6. Better organization for a growing chat history
As chat histories grew, users asked for ways to find, group, reuse, and branch conversations. Projects group related chats and files, and project-only memory can keep their context separate. Projects reached the Free tier in September 2025, with project file limits varying by plan. That month, logged-in web users also gained conversation branching: hover over a message, select More actions (⋯), then choose Branch in new chat to explore a different direction without replacing the original thread (ChatGPT release notes).
Projects and branching address useful parts of organization, but they are not the same as a comprehensive system of folders, tags, and information management. OpenAI also added a ChatGPT image library and PDF export for deep-research reports, which help with specific retrieval and reuse tasks (ChatGPT release notes).
7. More capable file and meeting workflows
Researchers and professionals wanted to work with long PDFs, spreadsheets, recordings, and multiple source files. In 2025, OpenAI introduced record mode for eligible users to transcribe meetings, voice notes, and brainstorming sessions, then turn them into summaries or other outputs. The documented availability specified the macOS desktop app. Project file limits listed by OpenAI were up to 5 files on Free, 25 on Plus, Go, and Edu, and 40 on Pro, Business, and Enterprise; limits and plan labels can change (ChatGPT release notes; ChatGPT release notes).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRank #4
Uploading a large document does not ensure every page, table, or row receives equal attention. Scanned PDFs, handwriting, diagrams, and complex formatting can be misread; recordings can be transcribed incorrectly, especially with overlapping speech or background noise. For consequential analysis, request page, section, row, or timestamp references and verify them against the original.
8. More personal and repeatable workflows
Users wanted ChatGPT to adapt to their role, tone, formats, and recurring tasks. Projects, Custom GPTs, memory, model choices, and connected tools all address parts of that desire. OpenAI’s 2025 enterprise report said weekly use of Custom GPTs and Projects had grown about 19-fold year to date and that roughly 20% of Enterprise messages in the period covered were processed through a Custom GPT or Project (OpenAI State of Enterprise AI 2025 report).
That figure is enterprise adoption data, not evidence that one-fifth of all ChatGPT users requested customization. It does show that reusable, configured workflows became important in organizational use.
9. More dependable coding tools
Developer requests centered on debugging, instruction following, larger code contexts, repository access, and workflows that span an IDE, terminal, or GitHub. OpenAI made GPT-4.1 available in ChatGPT for paid users in May 2025 and described it as especially useful for coding and instruction following. GitHub connectors also expanded research workflows; later Codex updates connected ChatGPT with IDEs, terminals, GitHub, and cloud workflows (ChatGPT release notes; ChatGPT release notes).

A coding-focused model or connected repository does not remove the need to review code, permissions, and execution environment. Model choice still involves trade-offs among speed, reasoning, context, tool access, and plan limits; generated code should be tested before use.
10. More flexible content controls
Some public wishlist coverage highlighted requests for less restrictive handling of mature, fictional, artistic, or controversial material, including an “adult mode” (The Decoder’s 2025 wishlist report). This is a real but segment-specific debate, not evidence of a broad majority request. Mature themes in fiction or art are not interchangeable with sexual, exploitative, abusive, or illegal material, and the reviewed 2025 releases do not establish that OpenAI launched a general-purpose adult mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remained only partly solved
Many releases narrowed longstanding gaps without eliminating them. The limits below describe unresolved needs, not a ranked list of OpenAI failures.
- Memory: ChatGPT gained more ways to reuse context, but not unlimited, perfectly reliable recall across every chat and project.
- Task completion: Agents can perform multi-step work, but still need oversight, clear permissions, and verification.
- Research: Search, citations, and deep research can improve discovery, but they do not guarantee trustworthy sources or correct conclusions.
- Access: Connectors and advanced capabilities are not universally available across plans, regions, platforms, and workspaces.
- Organization: Projects and branching help with some workflows, but do not amount to a complete folder-and-tag system.
- Offline use: The listed 2025 releases do not establish a general offline ChatGPT mode.
- Content controls: The public wishlist included more permissive options, but the releases cited here do not establish a general adult mode.
Why availability is part of the answer
A feature announcement is not a guarantee that every reader can use the feature. During 2025, access could depend on Free, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu; the web, mobile, macOS, or Windows app; workspace settings; usage limits; and country. European availability in particular differed for some memory, connector, and deep-research features. Check the current feature description and account settings rather than assuming another user’s access applies to your account.

The larger shift behind the wishlist
The strongest pattern was a move toward continuity: ChatGPT should remember what matters, work with the user’s files and services, find current information, communicate naturally, and help carry out a task. Memory, connectors, search, voice, projects, and agents are pieces of that broader product direction. That is an interpretation of the release pattern—not a published OpenAI ranking or proof that every feature originated in consumer requests. Workplace demand also shaped the year’s roadmap, as the enterprise adoption report illustrates.
