Yes. A 3dfx Voodoo2 PCI card can work alongside an original 2 MB Matrox Millennium PCI card. Keep the Matrox as the primary graphics adapter for boot screens, DOS and the Windows desktop; use the Voodoo2 as a secondary accelerator for compatible 3D games. For one monitor, the usual wiring is Matrox VGA output → Voodoo2 VGA input → Voodoo2 VGA output → monitor.

What each card does

The Voodoo2 is a 3D-only accelerator, not a replacement VGA card. 3dfx documentation describes it as designed to work with an existing 2D display adapter, and the archived FAQ says it cannot provide a standalone boot display or ordinary desktop. See the Voodoo2 manual and archived 3dfx Voodoo2 FAQ.

Task Matrox Millennium PCI Voodoo2 PCI
POST and boot display Yes No; requires a primary display adapter
DOS/VGA and Windows desktop Yes No
Glide 3D acceleration No Yes, for compatible games and drivers
Other 3D APIs Depends on Matrox driver and application Only where the game and suitable Voodoo2 driver support it

The basic pairing is compatible at the card-design level: 3dfx described the Voodoo2 as working with any 2D graphics board. That is not a promise that every vintage motherboard will initialize both cards without adjustment. PCI slot availability, BIOS behavior, resource allocation, drivers and the game all matter.

Check which Matrox card you have

This answer concerns the original Matrox Millennium PCI, commonly sold with 2 MB or 4 MB of memory. Do not mistake it for the later Millennium II PCI or AGP, or for the Matrox Mystique. The broad 2D-card-plus-Voodoo2 arrangement can apply to those cards too, but their drivers, BIOS behavior and connectors may differ. The Matrox Millennium manual covers the original card’s PCI installation.

Identify the exact Voodoo2 board as well. Diamond Monster 3D II, Creative, Orchid, Canopus and other manufacturers’ cards can differ in memory, clock, connectors and driver requirements. The chipset-level answer is the same, but the correct driver depends on the board and operating system.

How to connect one monitor

Use a VGA pass-through cable, not a link between the cards’ PCI connections. The cards communicate with the computer over PCI; the pass-through cable carries the Matrox’s analog video signal through the Voodoo2 to the monitor. The Voodoo2 can then take over for supported full-screen 3D applications.

Matrox VGA output → Voodoo2 VGA input
Voodoo2 VGA output → monitor

The cable is the simplest single-monitor arrangement, but it is not mandatory. A monitor with separate inputs, or a second monitor, can let you connect the cards separately and select the appropriate display. A pass-through chain adds connectors and an analog path; a poor or damaged cable may cause softness, ghosting, color shifts, intermittent video or no image.

Install the cards and drivers

Hardware

  1. Shut the computer down and disconnect AC power.
  2. Install the Matrox in a working PCI slot and leave it as the primary display adapter.
  3. Install the Voodoo2 in another usable PCI slot. The Voodoo2 uses PCI; its documented 66 MHz PCI capability does not mean your motherboard needs a 66 MHz slot. Many ordinary PCI systems run the bus at 33 MHz. See the Voodoo2 manual.
  4. For one-monitor pass-through, connect Matrox output to Voodoo2 input, then Voodoo2 output to the monitor.
  5. Boot and confirm the normal POST display and desktop appear before testing 3D.

Windows 95/98 software

Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows 98/98 Second Edition are the least complicated targets for period game and driver support. Driver packages vary by Voodoo2 board manufacturer and operating system; there is no single package that is correct for every card.

  1. Install and verify the Matrox driver first. The Matrox manual covers PCI installation and Windows 95 driver setup.
  2. Install the Voodoo2 card if it is not already installed, then boot Windows and allow it to detect the hardware.
  3. Install a driver appropriate to the exact Voodoo2 board and operating system, then reboot.
  4. Check Device Manager for the Voodoo2 device. If it is missing or marked with an error, troubleshoot PCI seating, slot resources and driver installation before blaming the Matrox.
  5. Test with a known Voodoo2-compatible game or diagnostic/demo. Device Manager detection alone does not show that a particular game is using 3D acceleration.

What to expect in games and DOS

A game must support a Voodoo2-compatible rendering path—most notably 3dfx Glide, or a supported Direct3D/OpenGL path—to use the card. A game that only uses standard VGA, another API, or software rendering will not be accelerated just because the Voodoo2 is installed. Some titles also need a particular patch, executable or configuration. Full-screen 3D is the normal use; do not expect the Voodoo2 to accelerate the Windows desktop.

The same distinction applies in DOS. The Matrox remains responsible for DOS display output. A DOS game needs built-in Voodoo support or a game-appropriate DOS Voodoo/Glide setup; ordinary VGA or Mode X games do not gain Voodoo2 acceleration automatically. The Matrox Millennium family’s 2D and DOS role alongside a separate 3dfx accelerator is reflected in historical configuration discussion at DOSDays.

The archived FAQ gives period guidance of up to 800×600 for a single Voodoo2 and up to 1024×768 for Voodoo2 SLI. These are not guarantees for every game, refresh rate, driver or monitor. SLI means two compatible Voodoo2 cards and two PCI slots; it is not needed for the Matrox-plus-one-Voodoo2 setup. The same FAQ notes that a 12 MB Voodoo2 generally has 4 MB of frame-buffer memory and 8 MB of texture memory, so software reporting 8 MB of texture memory does not necessarily indicate a fault. See the archived FAQ.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The PC will not show a boot screen

  • Confirm the Matrox is installed and selected as the primary display adapter in BIOS.
  • Leave the Matrox in the slot that worked previously; reseat the Voodoo2 or try another PCI slot.
  • If the system still fails, test with the Matrox alone, then add the Voodoo2 again. A motherboard may have PCI initialization or resource-allocation problems even though the cards are fundamentally compatible.

Windows boots, but the Voodoo2 is not detected

  1. Power off and reseat the card; inspect its contacts and slot for dirt or damage.
  2. Try a different PCI slot and check Device Manager for an unknown PCI device.
  3. Verify the Voodoo2 driver matches the board and Windows version. Remove stale Voodoo2 entries and reinstall if the device or control panel has disappeared; the archived FAQ includes this troubleshooting approach.
  4. If necessary, disable unused onboard devices in BIOS to reduce resource conflicts, then test the card in another known-compatible system.

The desktop goes blank after connecting the pass-through

Check the direction of the cables: Matrox output to Voodoo2 input, and Voodoo2 output to monitor. Test the Matrox directly to the monitor first, then try a different VGA cable. A monitor connected to the Voodoo2 input instead of its output will not show the intended pass-through signal.

  • 192 CUDA Cores
  • 2GB DDR3 GPU Memory
  • 128-bit Memory Interface
  • 28.5GB/s Memory Bandwidth
  • 4 Mini DisplayPort Connectors

The desktop works, but games do not accelerate

  • Check that the game supports Glide or another Voodoo2-supported API and that the correct driver is installed.
  • Check the game’s renderer settings, patches and executable; windowed modes or incompatible wrappers may bypass the card.
  • Test a known compatible title rather than treating successful Windows detection as proof that every game should work.

Games crash or show corruption

Check the driver version, cooling, card condition and pass-through cable. Aging Voodoo2 memory, an overclock, aggressive PCI/BIOS settings or an unreliable power supply can also cause instability. The Matrox’s presence alone does not establish that it caused a 3D fault.

When this setup makes sense

This is a practical pairing for a period-style Windows 95/98 PCI gaming PC: the Matrox handles 2D and ordinary display output while the Voodoo2 supplies acceleration to compatible games. It is less suitable if you expect modern operating-system support, universal 3D acceleration, or a digital-only monitor with no VGA input. Before replacing parts, test each card on its own and verify the pass-through cable; motherboard-specific PCI behavior can turn a compatible pairing into a troubleshooting job.
