Intel announced the Core i9-14900KS on March 14, 2024, as a special-edition, unlocked desktop processor with a maximum turbo frequency of 6.2 GHz. Intel called it the fastest desktop processor at launch; that was a March 2024 claim, not a statement about the fastest CPU available in 2026. The KS is a high-frequency version of Intel’s 14th-generation desktop family, not a new architecture. Its extra clock speed comes with higher base power than the Core i9-14900K, substantial cooling demands, and an important BIOS update to-do for buyers and owners.

What Intel announced

The Core i9-14900KS is a 24-core, 32-thread desktop processor with eight Performance-cores (P-cores) and 16 Efficient-cores (E-cores). It is unlocked for overclocking and belongs to Intel’s 14th-generation Core desktop lineup. Intel’s product database places it in the Raptor Lake family. “Raptor Lake Refresh” and “Raptor Lake-R” are common industry shorthand, rather than the processor’s official retail name.

At launch, Intel highlighted the chip’s 6.2 GHz maximum turbo frequency and said it was its fastest desktop processor. Intel listed a recommended customer price of $689–$699; that is an official price signal, not a verified current retail price. Intel’s launch announcement and product specifications provide the details.

What “up to 6.2 GHz” means

6.2 GHz is a peak turbo figure, not the speed the processor sustains across all cores. Intel lists 6.2 GHz for both Thermal Velocity Boost and maximum turbo frequency. It also lists 5.9 GHz for Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0, 5.7 GHz as the P-core maximum turbo frequency, and 4.5 GHz for E-cores.

The processor can opportunistically reach 6.2 GHz under suitable turbo conditions. Whether it does depends on factors including workload, temperature, power delivery, and motherboard firmware. A lightly threaded task may use the fastest P-core differently from a sustained all-core render. Do not interpret the headline as a guarantee that all eight P-cores will run at 6.2 GHz, or that a long multi-core workload will hold that speed.

The KS retains the 14900K’s core and cache configuration. Its distinction is a modestly higher peak frequency and a higher Processor Base Power rating, not more cores. Intel’s 14th-generation Core i9 family specifications list the corresponding frequency figures.

The 253 W Maximum Turbo Power figure is a CPU specification, not a measurement of total power drawn at the wall by a complete PC. Actual behavior depends on workload and motherboard settings; enhanced or unlimited board profiles can change power, heat, and noise.

Performance: where the extra frequency matters

Lightly threaded work

The higher peak boost is most relevant to workloads that can benefit from a fast individual P-core, including some lightly threaded applications and benchmarks. It does not translate into a guaranteed proportional performance increase over the 14900K: software, boost duration, cooling, and system configuration all matter.

Rendering and other multi-core workloads

Both chips have 24 cores and 32 threads, so the KS does not gain a core-count advantage. Its potential lead comes mainly from frequency and operating behavior. During long, heavily threaded work, temperature and power limits can constrain sustained clocks, making cooling and motherboard configuration important to the result.

Gaming

Game performance varies with the title, graphics card, resolution, settings, memory, and firmware. Intel’s own benchmark material used a defined system that included an RTX 4090, DDR5-5600 memory, Windows 11 Pro, and an ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero motherboard. Those results are Intel-supplied and apply to the stated test setup, not every PC. Intel’s benchmark page describes its test conditions. For a 2026 purchase, compare independent results for the specific games and settings that matter, including relevant AMD X3D and newer-platform options; the 6.2 GHz figure alone cannot identify the best gaming CPU.

Power, heat, and cooling

Intel rates the 14900KS at 150 W Processor Base Power and 253 W Maximum Turbo Power. Base power is not a ceiling, and Maximum Turbo Power is not a promise that every workload or motherboard will stay at that level. CPU package power also differs from a PC’s total wall consumption.

Plan a high-end build around substantial cooling: a premium dual-tower air cooler or a large liquid cooler, such as a 360 mm-class AIO, is a reasonable enthusiast starting point rather than a guarantee of a particular temperature. Results depend on case airflow, ambient temperature, fan curves, motherboard behavior, and power limits. A restrictive case or weak cooler can lead to throttling, reduced sustained performance, or distracting fan noise.

  • Check the motherboard’s power profile instead of assuming it enforces Intel limits by default.
  • Allow for strong case airflow and a cooling system suited to sustained CPU-heavy work.
  • Distinguish CPU package power from whole-system power when selecting and evaluating a power supply.
  • Treat extreme motherboard profiles and manual overclocking as configuration choices, not normal guaranteed stock behavior.

BIOS updates and the 13th- and 14th-generation stability issue

Intel says some 13th- and 14th-generation desktop processors were affected by a Vmin Shift instability issue. That does not mean every 14900KS is defective, but the model is within the affected desktop generations covered by Intel’s guidance. For a new or existing system, use the latest motherboard BIOS containing microcode 0x12F or later and select Intel Default Settings. Follow the board maker’s update instructions and verify CPU support before relying on the system.

If instability persists, Intel advises contacting support. Its guidance says eligible affected processors receive a two-year warranty extension, up to five years from the original purchase date; eligibility matters, so this is not a universal five-year warranty for every 14900KS. Intel’s current support guidance, reviewed July 21, 2026, covers the firmware, settings, and warranty policy. Earlier Intel guidance also discussed voltage behavior and motherboard power settings: June 2024 guidance for 13th- and 14th-generation K/KF processors.

If the system crashes, first return to Intel Default Settings and a known-stable memory configuration, then document the symptoms and contact support if they continue. XMP memory instability, an old BIOS, aggressive board defaults, and manual CPU overclocking can complicate diagnosis; changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to identify.

Overclocking and tuning

The 14900KS is unlocked and aimed at enthusiasts, but its stock configuration is already aggressively tuned. Manual overclocking requires a capable motherboard, adequate cooling and power delivery, and careful monitoring. Undervolting or enforcing Intel-default limits may improve efficiency or thermals, but every change needs stability testing, and BIOS labels and controls differ by board manufacturer.

Establish a stable baseline before tuning. Intel’s launch material warns that overclocking may affect system health or warranty coverage. Intel’s launch material includes that warning.

Who should consider the 14900KS?

It may suit

  • Enthusiasts who specifically want the highest-clocked special-edition Core processor for LGA1700.
  • Owners of a compatible high-end LGA1700 system who already have suitable cooling and want a top-bin upgrade.
  • Users whose lightly threaded work benefits from high peak clocks, or creators who can use many cores and are prepared to manage heat and power.
  • Collectors seeking the special-edition model from this platform generation.

It is a poor fit for

  • Budget gaming builds, small-form-factor systems, and quiet or low-power PCs.
  • Buyers prioritizing performance per watt or who do not want to update firmware and monitor stability.
  • New builders comparing total platform cost and upgrade path in 2026: the 14900KS is a 2024 LGA1700 product, so current newer-platform prices and benchmarks should be part of the decision.
  • Anyone choosing solely from the 6.2 GHz headline without considering sustained performance, cooling, and workload.

Alternatives to compare

  • Core i9-14900K: The closest comparison, with the same broad core and cache configuration. It may be the more sensible choice if its current price is substantially lower and the KS peak is not essential.
  • Core i7-14700K or 14700KF: Worth checking for mixed gaming and productivity when current pricing and workload-specific benchmarks favor it.
  • AMD Ryzen X3D processors: Relevant for gaming-focused buyers weighing gaming performance and efficiency against Intel-platform familiarity.
  • Newer desktop platforms: Compare current CPU, motherboard, and memory costs as well as performance and upgrade options, rather than assuming 2024 rankings still apply.

Intel’s $689–$699 recommended customer price is not a verified 2026 street price. New, used, boxed, and tray processors can differ in price, warranty route, and return terms. Check the seller’s policy and, for a used chip, request purchase documentation and verify warranty eligibility before buying. Independent coverage also questioned the launch model’s value relative to its extra performance and power demands; see TechSpot’s 14900KS coverage for review context, rather than treating one benchmark result as universal.
