For most laptop owners, replacing the complete compatible battery pack is the right repair; replacing the pouch cells inside a pack is specialist battery-rebuilding work. A healthy, flat pack may be replaceable at home if the laptop’s service manual supports it. If the battery is swollen, hot, leaking, punctured, or stuck, stop ordinary DIY work and arrange appropriate service.
What “replacing a Li‑Po battery” can mean
Laptop makers may call their packs lithium-ion, lithium-polymer, or Li-ion polymer. “Li‑Po” commonly describes lithium-ion cells in a flat pouch format; it does not mean the pack is safe to puncture or handle casually. Dell notes that lithium-ion polymer batteries are common in thin laptops and that swelling is a possible failure mode (Dell guidance on swollen batteries).
There are two different repairs:
- Replace the complete pack: remove the laptop’s battery assembly and install a compatible replacement. This is the usual consumer repair.
- Replace cells inside the pack: open the sealed assembly and rebuild its cell groups and associated electronics. This is not equivalent to swapping a battery and is not a beginner repair.
How to tell whether the battery needs replacement
Battery wear is likely when runtime has fallen substantially, the charge percentage drops unusually quickly, the laptop shuts down despite a displayed charge, or it runs only while connected to AC. A manufacturer diagnostic may report poor health, replacement required, or end of life. Dell lists rapid drain, AC-only operation, health warnings, and swelling among reasons to consider replacement or recycling (Dell battery guidance).
Before ordering a pack, check the laptop’s BIOS/UEFI battery diagnostic and the manufacturer’s support app, if available. Confirm that the adapter is recognized and that the charger, USB-C power supply, port, or charging cable is not the real fault. A loose internal connector, firmware issue, or inaccurate battery gauge can also produce misleading symptoms.

If the percentage reading seems wrong but the pack otherwise behaves normally, a model-appropriate calibration may improve the gauge’s estimate. It cannot restore chemically lost capacity or repair a failing cell; repeated full discharges are not a battery-health cure (iFixit calibration guidance).
Physical changes are a safety signal, not just a wear indicator. A raised trackpad or keyboard, warped cover, chassis gaps, or a laptop that no longer sits flat can indicate swelling. Stop charging and follow the swollen-battery guidance below rather than treating it as an ordinary replacement.
Choose the repair route before opening the laptop

Use the exact laptop model and submodel to find its service manual and battery part number. Product-family names alone are not enough: connectors, pack shape, voltage, mounting, and firmware support can differ. A model-specific guide, such as iFixit’s guide for specified HP 15-dy families, does not apply to every HP laptop (HP 15-dy example guide). Dell directs owners to the relevant model’s Service Manual for instructions (Dell support manuals).

How to choose a compatible replacement pack
Check compatibility in this order, using the original battery label and the laptop’s service information:
- Exact laptop model and submodel.
- Original battery part number or explicitly listed compatible part numbers.
- Nominal voltage and electrical configuration.
- Connector shape, cable position, and orientation.
- Physical dimensions and screw-hole locations.
- Rated capacity in watt-hours (Wh).
- Seller traceability, warranty, and return terms; check manufacturing-date or freshness information when supplied.
A matching connector is not proof of compatibility. A pack can fit the plug yet differ in voltage, identification or temperature-sensor signals, firmware support, dimensions, or charging behavior. A higher Wh rating is not automatically an upgrade; the pack still has to fit and be supported.

Compare the battery cost plus installation labor with the laptop’s realistic value. There is no single battery or service price that applies across models and regions; ask the repair provider whether its quote includes the pack, labor, testing, old-battery handling, and warranty.

When DIY replacement is reasonable
A complete-pack swap is a reasonable DIY project only when the battery is flat and undamaged, the service instructions are available, and the work does not require force or improvised contact with the cells. Have a stable, uncluttered, nonflammable work surface, good lighting, and model-appropriate tools. Typical tools are precision screwdriver bits and a plastic spudger or opening pick; a screw container, eye protection, and an anti-static wrist strap or mat may also help.
Do not proceed if the laptop is under warranty and opening it could affect coverage, the battery is glued in and difficult to release, the connector or cable is damaged, or you lack confidence with the model-specific procedure. Built-in MacBook batteries should be serviced by Apple or an authorized provider according to Apple’s guidance (Apple battery service and recycling).

General workflow for replacing the complete pack
This is a general outline, not a substitute for the service manual for the exact laptop. Screw locations, cover clips, battery disconnect modes, adhesives, and service precautions vary by model.

- Prepare: back up important files, shut the laptop down fully, disconnect the AC adapter and peripherals, and identify the exact battery part number. Do not use this ordinary procedure on a swollen or damaged pack.
- Follow the model’s service instructions: use any specified service or battery-disconnect mode, then remove the bottom cover using the prescribed tools and sequence.
- Disconnect the internal battery: release the battery connector by its plug or as the manual instructs. Do not pull individual wires or pry against the cells.
- Remove the old pack: remove its retaining screws and lift it without bending, twisting, squeezing, or puncturing it. If it resists because it is swollen or glued in, stop rather than forcing it.
- Compare old and new: verify part number, connector, cable orientation, voltage, Wh rating, dimensions, and mounting points before installation. Do not install a pack merely because its plug fits.
- Install and reassemble: position the pack without trapping its cable, reinstall the retaining screws, reconnect the plug fully and evenly, and close the laptop as directed by the manual.
- Verify operation: connect AC power, start the laptop, check battery detection in BIOS/UEFI or the operating system, and run the manufacturer’s battery diagnostic. Confirm that it charges and that the laptop can operate on battery.
Monitor the new pack during initial use. Stop using it if it becomes abnormally hot, smells unusual, swells, or has unstable charging behavior; do not keep cycling it in the hope that the problem resolves.

A laptop battery is not simply a row of interchangeable pouches. Depending on the design, the pack can include series and parallel cell groups, protection circuitry, a battery-management system, temperature sensors, current sensing, a fuel gauge, identification or authentication functions, and insulating and mechanical supports. Opening a charged pack can expose conductors capable of delivering high current.
A rebuild can fail even if the laptop initially turns on. Replacement cells may differ in capacity, state of charge, or internal resistance; the battery-management system may reject the pack or disable charging; the thermistor or identification line may not match; or a poor cell connection can heat locally. The cells also need suitable physical fit, insulation, and connections. Soldering directly to pouch cells with a household iron can subject them to damaging heat.

An iFixit document describes cell-level laptop battery work as educational material with safety caveats; its existence is not evidence that rebuilding is suitable for a beginner (iFixit cell-replacement guide). Do not bypass protection electronics, remove temperature sensors, short protection components, or use a different-voltage pack. For ordinary users, choose a complete compatible pack or professional service.
What to do if the battery is swollen or damaged
A swollen battery is a potentially hazardous battery. Do not press it flat, puncture it, bend it, crush it, clamp it, or force it out with a screwdriver. Dell specifically warns against deforming a swollen battery or trying to free one stuck in the laptop (Dell swollen-battery instructions); iFixit also recommends caution and professional help when needed (iFixit swollen-battery guidance).
- Stop charging. If you can shut the laptop down without disturbing the battery, do so, then disconnect AC power.
- Keep the laptop away from combustible materials and do not continue using it.
- Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider for removal, especially if the pack is stuck or the chassis is deformed.
- If the battery is hot, hissing, smoking, leaking, or actively burning, do not handle it casually; move people away, avoid fumes, and call emergency services if there is an active fire or immediate danger.
Do not assume a damaged pack can be mailed or placed in a standard store collection box. Call the recycling facility or manufacturer first and ask specifically about damaged or defective lithium batteries.
Post-installation checks and common problems

How to recycle the removed battery in the United States
Do not put a laptop lithium battery in household trash, curbside recycling, a garbage compactor, or a fire. Dell warns that lithium-ion batteries can cause fires in waste facilities and require specialized recycling (Dell recycling instructions).

Local acceptance rules vary; check before transport or shipment. For swollen, leaking, punctured, or otherwise damaged packs, call ahead for specific handling instructions rather than using a normal drop-off box.
When replacing the laptop may make more sense
Consider the whole device rather than the battery alone if the laptop is old, a correct replacement pack is difficult to source, other costly parts are failing, or professional labor approaches the laptop’s realistic used value. Lack of ongoing security updates can also weigh against investing in a repair, even if a battery can be fitted.
