Android Wear 1.5 was a historical, model-specific firmware release based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. It was never a universal update for every Android Wear watch, and Google’s current update documentation is aimed at Wear OS 2 and newer. If your legacy watch is eligible, use its official over-the-air (OTA) updater. Do not flash a generic “Marshmallow” ZIP: an image for another model, build or region can fail verification or brick the watch.
What Android Wear 1.5 actually means
“Marshmallow” describes the underlying Android version, while Android Wear 1.5 describes the wearable platform release. The release is commonly associated with Android 6.0.1 and the 6.0.1W2 build family, but manufacturers shipped device-specific builds, rollout dates and feature sets. The historical release documentation is available from Google’s Wear release history; the Wear OS article is useful only as secondary background.
Android Wear 1.5 is not the same platform as Wear OS 2. Wear OS 2 was a later, substantially newer generation, and current Wear OS releases generally do not support watches from the 2014–2016 Android Wear era.
Is the update still available?
Possibly, but only conditionally. OTA availability depends on the exact watch model, hardware variant, region, carrier configuration, current build and whether the manufacturer still operates the update service. A watch already running Android Wear 1.5 may have no later official upgrade path. A watch on an older build may or may not still be able to obtain the historical OTA.

Google’s current instructions state that the documented update process applies to watches running Wear OS 2 or newer: Wear OS update help. They do not promise a new Android Wear 1.5 download for legacy watches.
Check the exact watch and current build
Do this before downloading anything. Menu labels vary, but the usual path is:
- Wake the watch and open Settings.
- Open System or About.
- Choose Versions, if shown.
- Record the Android Wear or Wear OS version, Android OS version, full system/build number and security-patch level (if displayed).
Google documents the path as Settings → System → About → Versions, although older watches may place these items differently. The version shown in a phone companion app is not necessarily the watch’s operating-system version.

Compatibility is model-specific
Do not rely on a universal compatibility list. Manufacturers released Android Wear 1.5 by model and sometimes by regional variant.

Prepare before trying an OTA
- Charge the watch to at least 50 percent; leave it on its charger during the update.
- Charge the phone and connect it to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Keep the phone and watch close together with Bluetooth enabled.
- Turn off Airplane mode on both devices.
- Back up or export anything important. An update normally preserves data, but recovery steps may not.
- Allow several minutes or longer for downloading, rebooting and verification.
- Do not remove the charger, force a reboot or interrupt an installation screen.

Install Android Wear 1.5 through the official OTA updater
- Pair the watch with the companion app intended for that watch.
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Open System, About or System updates.
- Tap System updates or Check for updates.
- If an Android Wear 1.5 update is offered for your model, accept the download and installation.
- Leave the watch on its charger and keep it connected to the phone and network until it finishes and reboots.
- Return to Settings → About → Versions and record the new build.
Exact labels differ by manufacturer and old software version. Some watches display an update notification automatically instead of exposing a manual check button. Google’s current update guidance is at support.google.com/wearos/answer/6321140.
When no update appears
- The watch already has the latest firmware released for its model.
- Android Wear 1.5 was never released for that particular model or regional variant.
- The historical rollout ended, or the manufacturer’s OTA server is no longer available.
- Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi, the companion app or Google Play services is incompatible.
- A factory-reset watch cannot complete its old setup flow with the current phone software.
Restart the phone and watch, confirm the version screen, and check the manufacturer’s model-specific support page. Do not repeatedly factory-reset as a first response: a reset erases watch data, settings, installed apps and the existing pairing.

Manual ADB sideloading: only with an exact package
Manual installation is not the normal consumer update path. Consider it only when the official OTA is unavailable, the exact package is archived, and a reputable guide exists for the precise model and current build. You need a matching signed package, working ADB tools, a supported USB or debugging connection, a usable recovery menu and a recovery plan if installation fails.

A model-specific guide may use commands resembling:
adb devicesadb reboot recoveryadb sideload update.zip
These are illustrative, not universal instructions. Recovery names, filenames, USB support and required build checks differ. adb sideload will reject a package with the wrong signature or compatibility metadata; fastboot commands are not interchangeable with sideload commands. Unlocking partitions or flashing an image can erase the watch and increase brick risk.

Historical discussions show that sideloading existed, but they do not establish that a ZIP remains authentic or safe today: Android Wear discussion, Huawei Watch discussion and Marshmallow OTA discussion. Never flash a file described only as “Marshmallow for Android Wear,” an anonymous mirror upload or a package for a different region.

“Check for updates” does nothing
- Put the watch on its charger and leave it connected for several hours or overnight.
- Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, then restart both devices.
- Update or reinstall the compatible companion app if it is still available.
- Check About → Versions to see whether Android Wear 1.5 is already installed.
- Use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model.
Pairing stops at “Getting watch details” or “Finishing”
Keep both devices powered on, nearby and out of Airplane mode. If setup remains stuck, Google’s escalation path is to forget the watch in the companion app, remove it from the phone’s Bluetooth memory, factory-reset the watch and pair again: pairing troubleshooting.
A factory reset did not help
A reset cannot restore a discontinued OTA server or make an incompatible modern app support an obsolete watch. It erases local data and requires pairing again. Google lists the consequences at factory-reset help.
The watch has no Play Store
That is normal for Android Wear 1.5. The on-watch Play Store was associated with Wear OS 2 and newer; legacy watches generally received compatible apps through the phone. A Google support-community response describes this limitation at support.google.com/wearos/thread/132868, while Google’s current Play requirements specify Wear OS 2 or newer for on-watch Play Store use: Google Play requirements.

Firmware eligibility does not guarantee modern-phone compatibility. Current Android versions, companion apps, Play services and Bluetooth security requirements may block setup. Possible remedies include a compatible older Android phone, a clean pairing after reset, or a model-specific, version-matched legacy app. APK sideloading is unofficial and risky; avoid random APK mirrors and do not assume one workaround applies to every watch.
When to stop
Use the official OTA when the watch offers it and the model is confirmed. Consider sideloading only with an exact, verified package and a model-specific procedure. Do not flash when the model or current build is unknown, the ZIP source is anonymous, the regional variant differs, or the watch is functioning and the only goal is a newer app catalog or an on-watch Play Store. For many owners, an obsolete update server and modern pairing incompatibility make replacement more practical than risky firmware work.
