Do not guess the values of the three burned resistors or replace them and the IGBTs as a first step. A power-on failure can involve the IGBTs, gate-drive circuit, rectifier, DC bus, snubbers, or conductive contamination. The correct resistor values and the root cause have not been established for the reported Parweld XTM 201i failure. Diagnose the power stage as a system—or have a qualified welding-equipment service engineer do it.

What happened in the reported XTM 201i failure?

In a February 2025 forum thread, an owner reported that a Parweld XTM 201i made a loud failure sound immediately after switch-on, before the welding trigger was pulled. The owner found three destroyed resistors and suspected contamination or an IGBT-related failure. They later reported replacing IGBTs and several SMD resistors and returning the welder to operation, while suspecting grinding dust or another contaminant. That is an owner-reported outcome and theory, not an independently verified failure analysis. The thread does not establish resistor values, IGBT part numbers, a schematic, or the initiating fault. Read the All About Circuits thread.

A pop at switch-on points toward a fault that can be present as soon as the power stage is energized, but it does not identify which component failed first. Possible fault paths include the input rectifier or precharge circuit, DC-bus components, inverter IGBTs, gate driver, or a short caused by contamination or damaged insulation. A failed IGBT can destroy nearby resistors; a failed driver or another power-path fault can also damage the IGBT. Visible damage is evidence of an electrical event, not proof of its cause.

Why the resistor values cannot be identified by appearance

The three resistors could serve different functions even if they look alike. Depending on their circuit position, they might be IGBT gate resistors, gate-emitter pull-downs, gate-driver or feedback components, snubber parts, startup or precharge resistors, or current-sense/control components. No source for this incident confirms which they are.

  • Use reliable identification first: seek a service schematic for the exact board revision, manufacturer or authorized-service information, or a verified comparison with an identical board. An intact equivalent channel on the same board may help, but only if the circuit functions and revision match.
  • Do not infer a value from size or color: burned SMD markings may be unreadable, and physical appearance does not reveal pulse rating, voltage rating, or whether a resistor is fusible or flameproof.
  • Treat in-circuit measurements cautiously: parallel paths and connected semiconductors can distort resistance readings. A damaged resistor may also be open or have changed value.
  • Identify function as well as resistance: a replacement must suit the original part’s tolerance, package, pulse and thermal demands, voltage rating, and safety role. The right ohmic value alone is not enough.

The XTM 201i operator manual covers user-level troubleshooting, not board-level resistor identification. It does not provide the schematic or values needed to reconstruct this repair. Check the Parweld XTM 201i manual and product information.

Before inspecting the board: treat the DC bus as hazardous

An inverter welder can contain rectified mains and high-energy DC-bus capacitors that remain hazardous after the plug is removed. The front-panel switch going off, a dark display, or an extinguished indicator is not proof that the bus is discharged. Do not open or probe the machine unless you are qualified to work on this equipment and can follow the correct discharge and verification procedure.

  • Disconnect input power and follow the discharge method specified for the exact machine.
  • Never short capacitor terminals with a screwdriver, wire, or jumper.
  • Use an appropriately rated meter and probes to verify the bus voltage at the specified test points; do not assume it is safe until it has been measured as required by the procedure.
  • Use suitable PPE and insulated tools. Keep one hand away from the equipment where practical.
  • If the discharge method, isolation boundaries, or safe measurement setup are unclear, stop and use a qualified service technician.

A Lincoln Electric INVERTEC 400TP service procedure illustrates one equipment-specific approach: it calls for a high-resistance, high-wattage resistor to discharge the bus, then verification that voltage has fallen to zero; it also warns against using a shorting strap. Its example specifies 25–1000 Ω, at least 25 W, held for 10 seconds. Those values and timing apply to that Lincoln procedure, not to the Parweld XTM 201i; do not copy them as a universal discharge specification. See the Lincoln INVERTEC 400TP service manual.

Identify the exact machine and document the damage

Confirm that the machine is an XTM 201i, not an XTM 161i or another Parweld model. Board layouts and component values can vary by model and revision. Before cleaning or removing parts, record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Both sides of the PCB, component markings, connector positions, board revision, and serial or date labels.
  • IGBT markings, the location of each damaged resistor, and nearby components.
  • Whether failure occurred at switch-on or only when the torch trigger was used.
  • Recent movement, cleaning, grinding nearby, overload, generator use, overheating, or warning indications.

The XTM 201i manual separates symptoms such as loss of power, no output, overheating, over-current, and internal fault; they should not all be treated as proof of an IGBT failure. Use the exact model’s documentation and service support rather than photographs from a different board as a parts reference. Parweld directs internal faults to a qualified service engineer. Inspect for contamination and physical damage

Once the machine has been made safe under the correct procedure, photograph the damaged area and inspect it before deciding that a component-only repair is possible. Conductive dust or moisture can create leakage or tracking, but the forum owner’s grinding-dust explanation is only a suspicion; the thread does not prove it caused the failure.

  • Look for carbonized PCB material, conductive tracks, lifted pads, burned vias, cracked solder joints, and damaged insulation barriers.
  • Check for loose heatsink hardware, damaged insulation washers, cracked capacitors, burned rectifiers, and damaged snubber parts.
  • Check for blocked air paths, accumulated dust, a failed fan, and signs of overheating.
  • Remove loose contamination in a way that does not spread it deeper into the machine. Contamination beneath components or coating may not be visible from the surface.
  • If the board substrate is carbonized or has developed conductive tracking, cleaning alone may not restore safe insulation; board repair or replacement may be necessary.

Test the IGBTs and gate-drive circuit as a pair of systems

A basic check of a disconnected IGBT can identify a hard short, but it cannot establish that the entire switching circuit is healthy. Compare devices in the same bridge or switching leg and test the gate-driver path before installing replacements.

  1. Check the removed or isolated IGBT: test collector-to-emitter, gate-to-emitter, and gate-to-collector for shorts or abnormal leakage, and check the freewheel diode behavior where applicable. Follow the device datasheet and the machine’s service procedure for pin identification and test method.
  2. Compare corresponding devices: test the other IGBTs in the same switching leg or bridge. A failure may affect more than the visibly damaged device.
  3. Check gate-path components: verify gate-resistor continuity and the gate-emitter pull-down path, and inspect the driver IC or isolated driver transformer and its supply rails.
  4. Resolve ambiguous readings out of circuit: transformers, capacitors, parallel semiconductors, resistors, and snubbers can affect in-circuit measurements. A multimeter may miss dynamic breakdown, leakage under voltage, or a thermal/intermittent fault.

Do not transfer test points or pinouts from another welder. A Lincoln Weld Pak 2000 manual, for example, specifies model-specific IGBT diode-mode test points and separate output-diode and thermal-sensor checks; those instructions are not a pinout for the Parweld. See the Lincoln Weld Pak 2000 service manual.

Choose replacement parts by full specification

Match an IGBT by exact or manufacturer-approved part number whenever possible—not just the headline voltage and current ratings. Switching energy and frequency suitability, short-circuit withstand time, gate charge and drive voltage, internal diode behavior, package and pinout, isolation, and thermal resistance can all matter. Use genuine parts from a reliable source. A superficially similar or counterfeit device can appear to work at no load and fail under switching stress or heat.

For resistors, confirm resistance, tolerance, voltage and pulse ratings, flameproof or fusible construction, package, thermal location, and circuit function. If multiple IGBTs operate in parallel or in a bridge, whether to replace one or more depends on the topology, test results, and manufacturer guidance; it is not a universal rule.

Plan a controlled first power-up

Do not apply mains immediately after soldering. First verify installation and check for shorts across the DC bus under the appropriate procedure. Confirm IGBT orientation, connector placement, mounting insulation and torque, gate-path continuity, and the state of the driver and rectifier. Arrange a current-limited or otherwise controlled startup method suitable for the machine’s actual topology and the technician’s equipment.

A series light bulb or variac is not a universal safe test setup: some inverter and PFC/control circuits behave incorrectly with reduced or current-limited input. Use the manufacturer service procedure or a qualified technician’s design-appropriate method. Monitor for abnormal current, driver-supply problems, rapid heating, and unexpected behavior. If checks pass, test without a welding load, then at low output, and increase load progressively rather than beginning at maximum current. Stop immediately for abnormal current, rapid heating, fan failure, a new pop or buzz, or another warning.

Repair the board, replace it, or use service?

Option More reasonable when Main trade-off
Board-level repair The damage is limited and not carbonized; the exact parts and circuit functions are identified; and the technician has suitable isolation, current-limited startup, and waveform-test equipment. Finding and correcting an unseen driver or insulation fault takes more than replacing the visibly damaged parts.
Board replacement or qualified service The PCB is charred or tracking, several power stages are affected, documentation or parts are unavailable, or repair would require energized probing without suitable equipment. Board availability, repair cost, and machine value determine whether this is economical.

Parweld’s manual recommends that internal faults be inspected and repaired by a qualified service engineer. Manufacturer support is the sensible default when the circuit cannot be identified safely. For other brands, model- and serial-number-based documentation and parts lookup can help avoid revision mismatches, but another maker’s listing is not a source of XTM 201i component values. Miller manuals and parts lookup.

Pre-power-up checklist

  • Exact model and board revision confirmed; damage photographed.
  • Safe discharge and zero-voltage verification completed using the correct machine procedure.
  • Correct IGBT part, orientation, mounting insulation, and thermal contact verified.
  • Resistor values and ratings identified from reliable documentation or a verified circuit comparison.
  • Gate driver, rectifier, DC-bus parts, snubbers, diodes, feedback, and thermal protection checked.
  • PCB contamination, carbonization, tracking, connectors, fan, and thermal sensor addressed.
  • Design-appropriate controlled startup and staged load test arranged.
