Seagate revived the Maxtor name in 2016 for external hard drives; it did not bring back Maxtor as an independent company or manufacturer. The products included portable and desktop-style drives sold under Seagate’s control, in a move associated with the transition away from Samsung-branded external storage.
What Seagate revived in 2016
AnandTech reported the move on December 1, 2016, identifying three products: the Maxtor M3 Portable, M3 Station and D3 Station. The report described a product and branding shift, not a formal announcement that Seagate had formed a new Maxtor subsidiary or restarted Maxtor’s former manufacturing business. AnandTech’s December 2016 report is the contemporary account of the relaunch.
That distinction matters: the Maxtor trademark returned to consumer storage, while the original Maxtor Corporation did not return as an independent hard-drive maker. Seagate owned the brand and was responsible for the products carrying it.
How Maxtor became a Seagate brand
Founded in 1982 by former IBM employees, Maxtor grew into a major hard-disk-drive manufacturer and acquired Quantum’s hard-drive business in 2001. Seagate announced an agreement to buy Maxtor in December 2005, and the acquisition closed in 2006. Contemporary coverage put the transaction at about $1.9 billion. NBC News reported the deal’s approximate value; CNET covered Seagate’s acquisition.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
The company’s fate and the trademark’s fate are different stories. Maxtor stopped operating as an independent drive manufacturer, but Seagate retained the name and later used it on external storage. Seagate-hosted materials also described Maxtor as part of the Seagate family. Seagate’s MobileMax product overview reflects that corporate relationship.
Which drives carried the Maxtor name?
M3 Portable
The M3 Portable was the compact, portable member of the group, generally associated with 2.5-inch mechanisms and USB connectivity. The 2016 report described M3 capacities of 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB, with USB 3.0. Its account of the 4 TB configuration specified a 2.5-inch, 15 mm-thick drive with a 5,400 RPM spindle speed, 16 MB cache and shingled magnetic recording (SMR). Those details describe the high-capacity configuration in that report; they should not be generalized to every M3 model or production run.

M3 Station and D3 Station
The M3 Station and D3 Station were desktop-style external-storage products, rather than the pocketable M3 Portable. Desktop drives are typically larger and more likely to use an external power supply, but the exact dimensions, power requirements, connectors and internal drive depend on the model. The product names alone are not enough to establish those specifications.
What Samsung had to do with the relaunch
Seagate acquired Samsung’s hard-disk-drive business in 2011. Samsung-branded storage products continued to appear for a time, and by 2016 some external products associated with that business were being sold under the Maxtor name in at least some markets. The Maxtor relaunch was widely understood as part of Seagate’s transition away from Samsung-branded consumer external drives.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
That history does not prove that every Maxtor M3 contained a Samsung-manufactured mechanism. Branding, technology origins, ownership and the specific disk inside a retail unit are separate things; components can vary by model, capacity, market and production date.
Why reuse the Maxtor name?
The most plausible explanation is brand positioning, not a technical breakthrough. Maxtor had recognition among consumers, including people familiar with its OneTouch external drives, and Seagate could use the name to distinguish a mainstream or value-oriented external-storage range from products sold under its principal brand. The 2016 coverage establishes the products and timing, but does not establish a specific sales target or a definitive corporate statement of marketing rationale.

The name also gave Seagate another label to use as it reorganized products after acquiring Samsung’s HDD business. That is a reasonable reading of the timing and product history, rather than proof that every Maxtor-branded drive was simply an unchanged Samsung product with a new logo.

Seagate’s M3 Portable support page, checked August 18, 2026, lists these model and capacity combinations. A support listing shows that documentation and support resources exist; it does not establish that every model remains widely available new at retail.

Seagate’s Maxtor M3 Portable support page provides documentation, Drive Manager downloads, firmware lookup and formatting or troubleshooting guidance. Its currently indexed capacities differ from the four launch-era capacities in the AnandTech report, so the 2016 4 TB description should not be treated as a current global catalog.

For buyers, the return of the name offered another external-drive label and may have been familiar to people who remembered older Maxtor products. USB 3.0 provided a newer interface than the USB 2.0 connection used on historical Maxtor OneTouch III models. Seagate-hosted data sheets document the OneTouch III’s USB 2.0 interface and bundled backup software: OneTouch III USB 2.0 data sheet.
But USB 3.0 is an interface specification, not a promise of a particular transfer rate. A mechanical disk’s speed, recording method, workload, filesystem and enclosure electronics all affect real-world performance. SMR, which the 2016 report attributed to the specific high-capacity M3 mechanism it described, can also affect workloads with sustained writes or frequent rewrites. It is not a claim about every M3.
Most importantly, an external hard drive is a mechanical device, vulnerable to drops, wear, enclosure faults and data loss. One external disk is one copy of your files, not a complete backup system. Keep another copy locally and an off-site or cloud copy of irreplaceable data.

- Identify the exact model. “Maxtor M3” alone does not establish capacity, dimensions, connector, power needs or internal mechanism.
- Confirm condition and warranty. Check whether a listing is new, refurbished or used, and verify warranty coverage for your country and seller. A support-page entry does not confirm current retail stock or warranty terms.
- Match the drive to its use. A portable, bus-powered unit and a desktop drive serve different needs. Frequent rewrites or performance-sensitive work may call for a different storage choice than occasional backup or archiving.
- Verify support for older software. Seagate’s page references legacy utilities such as SecretZone and Drive Manager, but their presence does not establish compatibility with a current version of Windows or macOS. Check the exact software and operating-system versions.
- Do not format a drive to troubleshoot valuable data. If it is detected but files do not appear, first check the cable, power, partition visibility and operating-system disk management. If the disk contains important files and will not mount, avoid initializing, reformatting or repeatedly power-cycling it; make a clone or disk image first, or consult a professional recovery service.
- Investigate disconnects cautiously. A poor cable, insufficient bus power, a failing enclosure or a failing disk can all interrupt transfers. Do not assume the brand or model alone identifies the cause.
Was Maxtor really back?
As a product label, yes: Seagate put Maxtor on external drives again. As an independent company, engineering organization or manufacturing operation, no—the 2016 story does not establish that Maxtor returned in those forms. It is best understood as Seagate reusing a familiar trademark for consumer external storage, with product lineage connected to Seagate’s wider post-acquisition portfolio.
